Last weekend i went to my friends house and rode a crf230,crf150, and cr125(didn't like it, had to lean over to far to reach the ground). My ideas and wants/needs have changed so here we go,

1) your physical size 5'3, 135, 31~32 inch inseam
2) How physical / aggressive are you ? not very now, will probly get more aggresive quickly once i get my own bike
3) what do you plan to ride- woods trails, open sandy trails, dirt rodes, later on harescrambles then a small chance of MX
4) Do you have any riding experience? yes but limited
5) Do you think you will race ? possibly
6) Are you mechanically inclined and will you be doing your own bike work? i could probly do most basic work
7) Do YOU have a preferance to a brand/ motor choice brand no, four stoke but could go 2
8) Do you have a dealer close by your home that you might use and what brand(s) does he carry? the big four
9) How much do you plan to spend on a bike? less than 2,000 if possible(used)
10) anything else that you think would help form an opinion? it's hars to find a bike when your short!

I've ridden all three of those bikes and ended up with the 150F for starters (besides the height of the CR, what did you think of the 2t?) . It's a great bike for its intended purpose (playbike), but doesn't have enough power so I stepped up to a full sized bike this year.

I ended up with a KTM 200 XC-W 2 stroke for many reasons, but two big ones were the light weight and it has the lowest seat height of the full sized bikes (YZ, CR, etc.) You won't find one for $2K tho!

Have you looked into the Honda 150R? It's an mx bike but might suit your needs.
Good luck!

Posted by: 2 strokes for life---------------------

The 150R would not be a opption. But if you like the 2 stroke hit then a 80 or 85 would be awsome for sand and MX.

Posted by: speedfreak93---------------------

i would get a 150r but im 13 and dont have a job unless a can find one this summer, even then i couldnt afford it. The 2t was O.K. I liked the power but i live in n.c. and i think for the trails i would be riding, a 4t low end and ridability would be better for me. Also to get to our trails i have to ride through the nirghborhood and the oldladys get annoyed easily so i think the 2t would be to loud.

Posted by: 2 strokes for life---------------------

http://www.thedbsnorkel.com/ Put one of these on and then no more loud 2 stroke.

Posted by: 4thGearAndPinned---------------------

Get the crf150f. I much prefer it to my previous xr100 and xr200. It has easy rideability, quiet, chea[ and reliable. Great size for you as well.

Posted by: 150rguy---------------------

The 150f is a good trail/play bike. The 150R would be to expensive, but an 85 would be good to.

Posted by: 2 strokes for life---------------------

The 80 or 85 will come in handy if you ride any MX or once you start to ride any big jumps wich will happen.

Posted by: speedfreak93---------------------

if (big if) i get a two stroke, what kind i get will depend on how much i grow befor i get it. if i don't grow much i'm thinking a 2003 or up cr85 or 2002 or up yz85 because their suppodily better sprung for heavier riders(and have higher seats). what do you think about this?

If i grow alot, i will get a 125. i'm thinking a yz but what years should i look at?

if i out grow a 85 but can't handle a 39 inch seat (ahhh) i;m thinking a rm 125 (only 37 inches) or a modified yz

If i get a rm, what years?

what ways can i (cheaply) lower a yz 125 besides cutting the seat?

sory the long post ;-)

i bought my KX125 at 5'4'' and i was close to your weight. it took a little getting used too, but i have grown to really enjoy riding this bike. the only other cheap way i can think of, without messing with the suspension, is to cut the subframe. i live in NC too, you should head down to TNT in Chester, SC some time( its about an hour from Charlotte).

Posted by: speedfreak93---------------------

how far can a seat be cut down without it being uncomfortable?

Posted by: speedfreak93---------------------

i honestly can't belive that nobody has an opinion

you only waited 2 days during the week while everyone is at school and/or work, were not superhuman. we try to come up with the best solutions we can think of, but sometimes it takes some time. we cant know unless we did it ourselves. my tip: if you can see the sub-frame through the seat, youve gone too far .

Posted by: speedfreak93---------------------

"if you can see the sub-frame through the seat, youve gone too far ."

i love that! haha

i have yet another question. i know the basic difference between a 2t and a 4t, and that 2t are easier to work on because they have less parts but is there a web site i can go to that has everything i need to know in the same spot? I mean everything there is to know. I actually like learning, just don't tell my teachers that ;-)

Posted by: 76GMC1500---------------------

Why not get the RM 100 or KX 100? It's right in the middle of the 85 and 125. They've been around long enough you can get one used. Those CRF230/XR200's and TT225/230's aren't really good options for someone who has aspirations of doing any kind of racing or even just track riding unless it's a flat track (the suspension sucks).

Posted by: speedfreak93---------------------

i wasn't even considering the 230 or 150. what class would a kx100 race in during a harescramble?

Posted by: 76GMC1500---------------------

I'm not really sure how the class divisions are broken up, but it would certainly be legal in the 125 class.

Posted by: speedfreak93---------------------

76gmc, out of these which one?

can anybody on here who has or does own one of these testify to how they perform? theoretically it should be faster than a 85 because of the displacment, but how do they compare to a 125? i think thet would be resonably close because of the lighter weight of the 100 and its a six speed, but idk.

Posted by: XRpredator---------------------

not as fast as a 125. They perform like a two-stroke 100cc motocross bike.

don't know what else to say.

since you're 13, you should probably settle for whatever your folks can afford to get you.

unless im mistaken, all of the current 125's, including the KX, have 6 gears. the KX100 is not much different than an 85, but is supposed to have slightly more low-end. a 125 blows it away in power.

KX100 is Kawi's 85 Big Wheel.. They run in the Supermini class in MX. Not sure about scrambles though. I have a friend with a KX100, my YZ85, when not ridden by me, will smoke is bike.

95% rider, 5% bike, Indy.

Posted by: speedfreak93---------------------

"since you're 13, you should probably settle for whatever your folks can afford to get you."

only problem is my parents don't really seem intrested in supporting my new found passion. have to pay every cent of my bike, repairs, parts, gas, oil, pre mix, ect. issed:

If the bike is basically an 85 with more low end, why not just buy a 85? from my research, i could probly get an '03-'04 cr85bw or an '02-'04 yz85 for the same price range of an '01-'04 kx100.

I'm still just hoping i can grow enough before i buy a bike to get a 125 because I have one friend with an 85 and the rest have 125's and 250 4t's.

Posted by: speedfreak93---------------------

has anyone put an 125 engine into a 85 or 100 frame?

cr handling plus yz/sx power... if possible could be a good combination.

Posted by: Denny1068---------------------

alright...ur blowing this way out of proportion...just get the 85 because they are affordable and easy to get, 100 is too but harder to find, they basically have similar parts except the top end just go with the 85 i have one and i can out race a kid on a cr 250 and a z-400 it is the rider not the bike plus 15 ccs is not a big difference it would not go much faster but pull more bottom end if you are in the woods then you would not really be pulling through gears as much try to keep it in the power band. there is things you can do to make it have more of whatever you want like pipes, reeds...etc but it is the rider not the bike

Posted by: speedfreak93---------------------

o.k., my dad has know told me that i have to buy a four stroke for what ever reason.
i don't won't wnt high maintnence so i've been lokking at some older bikes.

would a xr250 be a good bike for me? are they truly as reliable as every one makes them sound? I've heard some say they start in 1-2 kicks and some say 5-7 so whats the truth? are they easy to work on?

give me some facts please. much appreciated.

Posted by: snb73---------------------

KX/RM100's are awsome bikes. For your size it is a definate option. Go to a dealer and site on a few different bikes, 85, 100, 125 see which one you like. Keep in mind they will seem a bit tall, because the suspension hasn't been broken in. Remember a 125 can be lowered.

Good luck, Steve.

Posted by: speedfreak93---------------------

please read my above reply. i can't get a 2t

Posted by: speedfreak93---------------------

bump

Posted by: SpeedyManiac---------------------

XR250 is way too heavy for you in my opinion. Look at the CRF150F or KX100. I think the KX100 would be the perfect bike for you, if you can convince your dad that a two-stroke is a viable option.

Posted by: speedfreak93---------------------

well if you think the weight of the xr would be to much, do you think i could handle the power of a 2001-2002 yz250f if i could find one cheep enough?

Also i might have i chance to buy a crf230f next summer. would this be a viable option?
