Chest Protectors - Under or Over?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: robwbright---------------------

I'm wondering if you guys prefer under shirt or over shirt chst protectors?

I'm thinking of buying a new one and I'n not sure if I want to go under shirt or not.

Posted by: SpeedyManiac---------------------

I have an over the shirt Fox Airframe and love it. I ride in the bush and find the chest protector over the jersey protects me and my jersey from branches.

Posted by: Matt 193---------------------

Over. I don't know why I like it that way just have always worn it that way, and din't feel as comfortable with it under the jersey.

Posted by: JST122---------------------

Im a fan of the hard plastic chest protectors, vice the soft foam roost guards so I go with it outside the jersey. I dont think the plastic ones would be very comfortable under the jersey. I am currently running a fox airframe and it is great, very comfortable and once you are used to it you dont even know its there, until it helps you out in a crash or during a stone spray sandwhich!

of course you'll need some tape.. or bandaids

Posted by: robwbright---------------------

Anybody tried the ARC chest protectors from Rocky Mountain?

Posted by: KX02---------------------

I wear a TLD with the shoulder caps removed under my jersey. It's a really nice protector over or under.

Posted by: rickyd---------------------

I have both. Actually I sweat more with the under jersey roost guard. I wear a t-shirt underneath it. I recently started using my regular CP again.

Posted by: 150rguy---------------------

I dont like wearing one underneath because it uncomfterable to me.

That's what I figured - I can't really see wearing a t-shirt, under jersey protector and long sleeve jersey when its 95 Degrees in July.

Posted by: XRpredator---------------------

there ain't enough room under my jersey for a protector . . .

Yeah that or a t-shirt to protect the nips , either way I dont see it being very comfortable and the extra layers in the summer cant be very cool.

Posted by: 2-Strokes 4-ever---------------------

Scott Summers wore shirt...protector...jersey. Tight humid woods, 95 degrees, 300+ lb motorcycle. Stud muffin.

Posted by: mideastrider---------------------

I wear mine on the outside. My son wears a jersey with chest protector over it and a larger jersey over the chest protector. He don't like the way mud cakes up on the chest protector it shed's of the jersey pretty well.

Get some UnderArmor heat gear and you will be set. It works much better than t-shirts and keeps the ronies from being rubbed raw...

Posted by: Matt 193---------------------

Or you could just use masking tape. Or duct tape if your a real man.

Posted by: rmc_olderthandirt---------------------

When I park the bike I take the chest protector off, but the jersey stays on.....

Rod

Posted by: Charlie Mix---------------------

Dress it under the shirt made it less prone to snag in somethings in case of contact with other bikes/guys, so is less dangerous.
In FMI (italian) rules is mandatory.

Posted by: kmccune---------------------

Over the jersey full coverage hard impact "spreading" ( sorry can't think of the exact word for this at the moment) and padded plastic!

Posted by: robwbright---------------------

Ordered the A.R.C. Pro-Flex for $50.00 here:

http://www.rockymountainatv.com/pro...odFamilyId=7265

I hope it's better than my beat up 661 I bought off e.b.a.y last year. . . LOL

Posted by: 76GMC1500---------------------

Another advantage of the over the jersey setup is that it protects your jersey when you're sliding on your back down the side of a mountain.

Posted by: mtk---------------------

I'd rather have the $50 jersey protect my $160 pressure suit.

word!

Posted by: trevor.summerfield---------------------

what about the sixsixone under protectors? those look comfortable? but does that foam count for a chest protector? could you substitue one for a chest protector?

Posted by: xTYBALTx---------------------

Dainese makes the best 'under the jersey' pressure suits. By far.

Posted by: DougRoost---------------------

I think it depends to some extent on woods vs. MX use. The MX guys seem to wear them more for roost and maybe want to show their sponsors off on their jersey or something. In the woods the hard plastic ones with good shoulder protection are worth every penny if your shoulder smacks into a tree. Also easy wear a camelback over one, or even zip tie a hydration bottle to it.

I bought one, but haven't been able to use it yet.
I don't get back home until end of May.

Posted by: Racerboy---------------------

I wear an over the jersey type, honestly its the only kind ive used. So I cant really say from experience but most of the lightweight foam under jersey ones I cant imagine doing much in a crash. Also I really like the shoulder protection and a place to mount my neck roll. If I was to go under the Jersey it would be a Sixsixone core saver, thor sentinel, EVS Revo 5 or TLD without the shoulder cups on cause I want some hard plastic.

Posted by: heino---------------------

I put on an normal T-shirt first, then the protector, followed by the jersey. The reason I do this is to keep the chest protector clean, as it is hard to clean and it prevents scrathes. The T-shirts prevents chafing to your skin.

Posted by: toddb3---------------------

I use a Revo5 under the jersey, I dont wear a t-shirt under it though. The foam is pretty soft under the hard plastic and it seems like it keeps my jersey from sticking to me when I'm sweating. The Revo 5 has hard plastic shoulder cups that I tested last weekend which they held up well. It probably doesnt protect as well as say an airframe but it covers the vital organs and it doesnt get in my way or move around.

call me stupid but i dont wear one

I was the same way until I slid chest down over the rocks they use under railroad tracks.

Posted by: flyingfuzzball---------------------

ha stupid
i didnt wear one til i saw my friend bruise a rib from a branch.

it swung back and hit him.

Posted by: just_a_rider---------------------

I wear mine under the jersey but have a t shirt on so it doesn't rub on my bare skin. Makes me look all muscled up

Posted by: colotowyo499---------------------

I like c.p. over the jersey because there is a venturi cooling effect from the holes in the plastic. A jersey over will diminish this cooling by covering the slots and cutting wind coming in. Conversely, if you dare ride in cold you can stay warmer with jersey over the protector.

Posted by: 86endurochmp---------------------

hardshell. over. venturi cooling effect? dude- you must have lift!

Posted by: Dracus124---------------------

Chest protectors are for pussies!!!!!!! What happened to just helmets and gloves? you should just wear a helmet, gloves, some boots, and maybe some goggles when riding with other people!! call me crazy, but i love to go 70mph off road on a big bore 2 stroke like a guppie!

Posted by: 150rguy---------------------

What bout something like this? Li $140

Or this? $110

Posted by: Hughes 097---------------------

i still dont have one .

Posted by: CR Scott---------------------

Those Thor suits are cool looking. I've had luck with the EVS Ballistic jersey and a EVS2 free floating neck roll. The ballistic jersey holds the elbow pads in place and the neck roll gives a bit of protection for the collarbones. Jersey over that with camel back over that. the Ballistic suit is vented so it's not too hot and comes with an integrated kidney belt.

Posted by: mex_ros---------------------

I always wear a chest protector over my shirt but in the winder i mostly wear a press suit(under), because it keeps me warm.

Posted by: ShoujoKakumei---------------------

The over-the-shirt ones seem more solid.. I've never really worn either kind long enough to have a real preference since I just borrow my friends' stuff, though.

But the one time I tried one of the under-shirt ones, it was definately not made for a girl... Not comfortable... lol

Posted by: joey26---------------------

i've been looking at the EVS and Alpinestar ballistics jerseys. They are both right around $200 and i think that the money is worth every dime of protection. The way i think of it is that if i go down on the track and it keeps me from getting bruised up and feeling better to race the next week then it was worth it.

Posted by: theKDX200rider---------------------

I also prefer over the jersey. They are more protective and don't cause you to sweat. Plus, that hard plastic breaks branches on the way by, the soft ones still get stabbed.

I also use the Fox Airframe, but I use it under my jersey... Rode for about 6 hours the other day and forgot that I had it on...

Posted by: Rooster---------------------

Over the shirt. If you don't have scratches and dings in it, you are NOT riding hard enough!

Posted by: sparkysakitas---------------------

rooster is cracking it on a tree considered riding hard enough?

Posted by: Bonehead---------------------

BUY a leatt

Posted by: MSB22---------------------

i've never really got into chest protectors prob be a good investment for me to make before it warms up here

Posted by: cthowards---------------------

I used a Thor chest protector until I crashed hard and hurt my shoulder, elbow, and hand. Now I wear a Thor RIG SE that goes under the shirt and has built in shoulder pads, elbow pads and the chest proctector. The thing is very comfortable and you would be shocked at how much air flows through it...I was surprised. But if you're looking for protection, this thing covers alot of your upper body and is no more uncomfortable than an external check protector in my opinion.

Posted by: YZ85KID---------------------

I've worn mine over since i was 4.

Posted by: 25Cameron25---------------------

i only wear over. under seems like if you wrecked you might end up ripping your jersey.

Posted by: 89RM---------------------

I didn't start wearing one till i made the transition from four wheels to two. I have a thor quadrant(i think) it already saved my back once. Its cheap insurance to maybe save yourself from cracked ribs

Posted by: Dirtymotonut---------------------

I wonder if Victorias Secret could make one for us gals???? Light weight, sexy but protective of the goods if ya know what I mean. Then why hide such a nice outfit under the shirt .....

Posted by: SAPPER---------------------

I like mine under. Some one said a few back due to mud. I grew up in muddy areas so the jersey is easily changable vs. cleaning a CP between heats.

Also, my son wears the new RXR. Awesome unit. It saved him many times and he loves it. he wears his outside cause his EVS Evo neck collar pops into it. So it all comes off in one shot. If I get more serious in racing, I'll invest in one. They are nice. But for racing only. They will build up a sweat. but for 5-7 laps, who cares!

Posted by: Jeff Gilbert---------------------

I wear a t-shirt, protector, then jersey for mx. The jersey over the cp keeps it from sliding up when I hit the ground

Posted by: Krossipoiss---------------------

Mx jersey under, chest protector over, its more comfortable so.

Posted by: russdaddy---------------------

i like to wear a wife beater, then a jersey, then chest protector,i just got a new Thor force i believe its called and its nice and comfy for over the shirt use and the front and back panels are adjustable.

Posted by: LEllis7motox---------------------

I wear my cp over, i always have and i do not know why... But it does seem in the trails that twigs and such snatch on to my jersey so i think wearing the chest protector over helps.

Posted by: sx2504life---------------------

i have a under with shoulder caps and elbows and back and chest and a kidneybelt and omfg its hot with it on in the middle of summer u can only ride for a few hours at a time if your lucky even with drinking heaps u just loose too much fluid

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------

Chest protector? Wimps. Now if I was jousting?

Posted by: wake_rider---------------------

For some reason the single track trails I ride seems to like to think that we indeed are jousting! I have experienced too many 2" thick face/body slappers that like to freshly hang out on the backside of fast, sweeping corners and like to meet my body at a good 30+ mph for me to not wear a chest protector. It feels like a tunnel of baseball bats!

Plus, to be honest, I seem to have a hard time keeping it on two wheels and the continuous impacts I experience being spread out over a larger surface area rather than directly on the back/sternum/ribs is a welcome thing!

Posted by: Dirtjunkie85---------------------

I like the over jersey Roost Deflectors more, I have tried one of the under the jersey ones it was the EVS G5 ballistic Jersey, I did not like it because it mad me sweat a lot and it rubbed on my shoulders. The one i wear now is the Alpinestars A-10 roost deflector Its a really nice one.

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------

Stupid 450f's roost. Over chest protector now! Vintage Bob

That's it! Last week or so ago I was at Dutch and the fast guys (my buddy), even with an under, got some nice welts from the rocks. Not a pretty sight even on a dude

Posted by: Dirtjunkie85---------------------

It depends on what type of riding you do and your personal preference. I ride alot of trails and don't like wearing the ones that go under the ones that go over allow more movement for me.

Posted by: rostifer---------------------

I personally use hockey gear and duct tape pillows and sponges to my elbows and knees. Then I have one of those goofy helmets they have on NItro Circus and swimming goggles to protect my eyes. Haven't broken a bone yet!!
