hey guys,

First post here, and right away I have to ask a stupid question. I'm 27 and I've been riding on the street for about 4 years. basically I have a baby now and I want to get off the street but still have something to play with. so that's where the dirt bike comes into play.

I don't know about the different sizes, so I have to ask if a 125cc is too small? I remember taking the Rider training course and I'm pretty sure we used 125cc dirt bikes for that course. I remember them being fun, but I don't want to find out a 125cc is way too small after I buy one. should I be only looking at a 250?

I pretty much want it only for playing around with, bring down to the cottage and ride it on some dirt roads, maybe through some fields. otherwise it's gonna be playing around the house or a little on my street.

I'm 27, 180lbs, 5'8

It will help us out alot.

And as for riding threw fields, and dirt roads and such you dont want a MX bike. You need a trail bike.

I would suggest a KDX200/220 Its a 2-stroke made for trails and its 200cc

Ya I'm not really asking what bike to buy, but I'm more interested in knowing if a 125 is too small for somebody my size and age.

these questions seem more based on finding a more specific bike.

if you do own a 125, itd help if you replaced that with what you currently have in your profile. some people dont take the opinion of someone who doesnt have a bike as seriously sometimes . the 150 4T( whether its the new Honda "R" version or the trail version) is a bike designed for people significantly smaller than you. a 125 would be a good bike for you. i bought mine when i was around 5'4''-5'5'' and around 110lbs.( but that was a while ago). fill out the form that Moparman listed, it will help us form a better and more accurate opinion of what we think would best suit you, specific bike or not.

I think a KDX200 or 220 would much better fit the bill.

Thanks for the replies guys, it helped me clear up some things. below are the answers to the questions, so maybe I can get some help narrowing down a specific bike

1) your physical size (both height and weight are important) 5'8 180lbs
2) How physical / aggressive are you ? MEDIUM
3) what do you plan to ride- MX/SX tracks, woods, fields with friends or ????? WITH FRIENDS, AROUND THE HOUSE, COTTAGE, SOMETHING TO PLAY AROUND WITH AND WORK ON AT HOME.
4) Do you have any riding experience? YES 4 YEARS RIDING ON THE STREET
5) Do you think you will race ? NO
6) Are you mechanically inclined and will you be doing your own bike work? YES, WORKING ON MY OWN BIKE IS AS FUN AS RIDING IT
7) Do YOU have a preferance to a brand/ motor choice (2 or 4 stroke)? DOESN'T REALLY MATTER, LEANING TOWARDS A YAMAHA YZ125 THOUGH
8) Do you have a dealer close by your home that you might use and what brand(s) does he carry?
9) How much do you plan to spend on a bike? 2000-3000
10) Do you live in California? NO. I LIVE IN TORONTO

No, a 125 is not too small. The YZ-125 is one of the taller bikes on the market, it is not a kids bike. Power wise it has plenty of power to get you into trouble!

Riding "around the house" even a 125 is going to much more power than you can possibly use. If you get out on an open "power line" road and the 125 two stroke will not be keeping up with your buddy on a 250 two stroke, but it can certainly get you going fast enough to get you in over your head.

A 250 will definitely go faster, both in terms of top end and acceleration. Do you need or want to go that fast? By the time I am in top gear on my 125 I am asking myself "Do I really want to fall going this fast?"

There will be times that the power of the 250 will come in handy, like sand washes and some hills. The 125 will climb the hill but it requires a bit more technique, more precise shifting, and keeping the revs up. The 250 will have more power that may allow you to hold one gear longer, but you can also get into trouble by applying too much power.

The YZ-125 is a great bike and you won't go wrong with that. You may never use the capabilities that it could provide, however. The YZ is what is referred to a a MX bike, born and bred for racing.

Based on your description of how you are likely to ride you might be better off with an "off road" bike, such as the Yamaha TT or WR series. Both are four cycles which may not annoy the neighbors as much (sound and exhaust smoke). The TT series is more of a low end, "trail bike" (cheaper) where the WR is closer to being a MX capable bike, at about twice the price. The WR series also comes with a headlight and usually some sort of speedometer/odometer for running enduros. If you go 4 stroke then think in the 250 cc or above range.

You'll get bored with that bike fast.

ya I've read up a little on it, but I think it would be a good idea for me to get so my wife can learn to ride on it. gonna try to get her into it and then she can have it and I can upgrade to something NICE haha

I know it's not a bike I'm gonna want to keep for myself, but it will serve the purpose of giving me something to play with for now.
