How's the 200 xr?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm looking at a bike that I want to be able to play around with in gravel pits and on trails. Its a 2002 Honda 200XR and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with it? He's asking 2600obo CDN.

They're reliable and hold their value very well. They don't make very much horsepower and the suspension/brakes aren't very good. If you're learning how to ride and don't need a full-sized/full-powered bike, you can't go wrong. I've seen worn out XR200's from the 80's sell for $1500 USD.

I'm not generally a Honda fan, but I found one for $400 online that only needed a new rear tire and the rear spokes tightened for my son to ride. He is only interested in trail riding and not racing so it's perfect for him. Oh, I put a new spark plug in it and it starts in one kick.
It is a 1983 XR200R!

I had a 1999 XR200R that's basically identical to the 2002. It's a great stepping stone bike as it's extremely nimble on the trails. The suspension is lacking, so are the brakes and the motor definitely isn't a horsepower king, but it's still a fun bike. Hell, I even raced mine for 3 seasons (harescrambles and cross-country) and did pretty well on it. Now that I've stepped up to a real race bike though, I shudder about racing the old XR. Modern suspension and brakes are a wonderful thing.

As for the price, I'd only pay that much if it's in really, really good shape. Otherwise I'd try to get the price down to the $2200 range.

Where in BC are you?

great foo-foo bike

Posted by: SpeedyManiac---------------------

Calling it a foo-foo bike is funny, because I beat guys on full size bikes (125s, 250s and 450s) all the time offroad. Not bad with 1/3-1/2 the horsepower, terrible suspension and not much for brakes. I never underestimate a rider on an XR200 as they are still great woods bikes.

I live in Prince George. My friends dad said he had one from the 90's and he said that it didn't have good suspension or as much power as other bikes he had but that he still had lots of fun on it. I am 5'8" and 150 lbs so I'm sorta wondering if i should go look at it some more. Thanks for the help

Posted by: SpeedyManiac---------------------

How much riding experience do you have? I moved up to a XR200R when I was 16, about 135lbs and 5'8"ish. It worked well for me for a few years, but I ended up outgrowing it. It is a good stepping stone bike though.

Posted by: DR_Z---------------------

I rode last summer on a 125 drz but its a pretty small bike. I grew out of it pretty fast. But I'm a fairly active person. I play hockey and am In good shape.

Posted by: SpeedyManiac---------------------

What sort of riding do you do? (Motocross, trails, racing?)

Posted by: DR_Z---------------------

i ride mostly trails and play around in a few gravel pits. I want a good trail bike but I want to be able to tackle some smaller jumps like a few feet.

Posted by: SpeedyManiac---------------------

The XR is fine for small jumps, but I wouldn't be going off jumps on a motocross track. It's not a very good hill climber, but it gets by. I had a lot of fun on mine for the 3 years I rode it.

Posted by: DR_Z---------------------

Ya I'm not gonna be on motocross tracks at all. Just smaller jumps. I've heard the brakes aren't very good but I was wondering if that was just people who were comparing it to disk brakes. For drum brakes there alright aren't they?

They're fine. First of all the XR has enough engine braking that you don't even need mechanical brakes 1/2 the time. XR's are good playbikes and the point is to ride what you got, anyway.

if your not into power or getting big air you cant go wrong with a xr200 owned one myself, they are bullet proof. never have to touch them just change oil and add gas. they will usually start within 2 kicks even when its 30 to 40 degrees out nice starting bike.

Posted by: 450X---------------------

i owned a xr200 great bike you cant kill one of these things. for that kind of money you should be able to step up to a xr250 (owned one of these also) in that same year range. the 250 has quite a bit more power than the 200 and the durability is the same, just change oil and add gas and these things will run forever.

Posted by: 76GMC1500---------------------

They make good flat track bikes for little people.

I've always suggested begging riders get XR250's, but their resale value is ridiculous. Nobody I know can afford one, even used. The 400's are even worse.

Posted by: DR_Z---------------------

So if I can find one it would be a good idea for me to look at the xr250 to?

Posted by: 76GMC1500---------------------

If you want a full-sized bike. Depending on your size/riding ability, you may not feel comfortable standing over the 250 (they have a full 12 inch suspension travel and a full 36 inch seat height). But, you pretty much can't go wrong with any of the XR's, especially anything early 90's and up.

Posted by: 450X---------------------

i think the xr250 would fit you quite well. my brother owns my old 250 its a 2001 and he's 5'9" 160lbs. he really likes it and is actually ready for something with alittle more power. where do you live DR_Z?

Posted by: 2 strokes for life---------------------

DR_Z, i also live in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada. What scool do you go to, i am from Kelly Road Secondary School.

Posted by: DR_Z---------------------

I live in prince george. I go to duchess park. Whats your name?

Posted by: 2 strokes for life---------------------

Sheldon Ewing, how about yours. In just a generaly area were abouts do you live and where do you ride.

Posted by: just_a_rider---------------------

I had an 83 model back in 84 and it was a great bike then I can only assume they have gotten better.

Posted by: DR_Z---------------------

I'm gonna wait a bit and see if I can find a xr 250 maybe but if I can't i'll go for the xr 200. I live out by tabor mountain and thats where I ride.

Posted by: 2 strokes for life---------------------

Man i went ridding there last year and it was awsome. The hill was also nice especialy the little Freestyle park. There was a XR250 in the paper last week for $1800 but it had sold. There is also a 2001 XR200 for $2100.

Posted by: katoom 300 rider---------------------

One of the Mechanics that comes in for parts where I work, said he might be selling a (I think it was a) 1998 XR200, I asked him how much and he said $350-400
If he sells it I might just buy it for resale, or a partial trade toward a trials bike.
I used to ride with a guy who had this same bike, he was a smaller guy, he did amazing on it, raced and won hare scrambles, he was slick on it in the woods.

Posted by: stoor---------------------

Posted by: 2 strokes for life---------------------
