cr 250 shock

I am going to be rebuilding my rear shock on my 1999 cr 250. Nothing is wrong I just don't know how long its been with out being serviced. I will probabibly just change out the oil and recharge with nitrogen(with help from someone experienced), however I have come across a proaction 3 way valve piston for almost free. If I used this piston would it make my shock perform any better. I know it would be alot better if I just had a professional revalve my suspension but im on a budget. Just wondering?

i dont know what piston you have in stock , but yea it more than likely would
for the oil flow- but remember there is a big deal with shim placement as well
there are shims on bolth sides of the piston - for damping ,and the rebound
the oil flows past the upper shims -through the piston and past the lower shims with each movement
stock shocks are great these days- the clickers really work-
a lot of times a spring rate change will benifit more than people realize
what do you want more of? damping or rebound?-

I guess I did not make myself clear, I woud have having a race tech trained and certifed suspention specialist doing/helping me with the suspention work. My question was will just replacing the stock pistion with a proaction some how help the performance of my shock? with out actually getting the shock revalved.
I'v decided just to reuse the old pistion, but I would like to know if just changing the pistion would have made a diffrence?

Pistons design affects the valving, so just changing the piston without the valving to match is a bad idea in my opinion.

Different suspension companies have different valving theory, their pistons will be designed to complement their valve stacks. I wouldnt swap it unless your going to revalve too.

i also have a 99 cr 250. I put in a crf 450 shock with race tech valving and crf 450 springs and race tech valving up front. Although pretty stiff it keeps a lot steadier through the obstacles and is quite smooth through trail type obstacles. Before (stock)it was undersprung for my weight (200 lbs) which really tired me own due to the constant bottoming. I think springs are really key for suspension setting. By the way I really like my 99 although I also ride a CRF 450 which is also pretty awesome.

Yeah, I also thought about the idea of using a new shock and or forks from a later model bike. The stock springs r actually good for me. Im only 150 with out riding gear. Im just goning to rebuild the stock stuff, its not worth putting alot more money into the 99 cr250. I'll prolly use it for one maybe two more seasons then i'll actually be able to justify the need for a newer bike as my skills progress.
