Shock Spring help

I removed the spring from my single shock using a large flat head screwdriver. I thought I was going to rebuild the shock but decided not to. My problem is that I can't get the spring back on, I don't want to buy a spring compressor so are there any substitutes? I've tried using vices and stuff but I can't get the spring compressed enough.
