Hot Cams Stage 1 in XR600?

If I were to put a HC Stage 1 in my 98 XR600 is it going to cause me more headaches, maintenance and overall shorten engine life?

Will it offer that much added power and does this mod need to be carried out with other work?

IMO, adding a cam is one of the best improvements you can make in your engine. A stage 1 will add torque to your engine and will not over stress the valve train. The XR has a very bullet proof valve train and will withstand the aftermarket cam quite well. If you don't add any more compression to the engine, just adding the cam will not shorten your engine life.

You may want to rebuild the top end and check your rings and valves for proper seating. The ports on the XR are pretty good in their stock configuration. A little clean-up and blending of the rough edges is all that is required. It's a good idea to use a new set of valve springs also. Check your rocker arm surfaces where they ride on the cam lobes. If they are worn, replace them before installing the new cam.

Good luck.
