Kennedy Meadows ~ Roll Call

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

I was hoping to get a sense as to whether people were shooting for the weekend before July 4th or the weekend after ? I need to get the vacation days in and want to pick the right days.

Rhona will be joining me unless she has to work, in which case I'll be solo. As of right now she'll be there.

Posted by: 2strok4fun---------------------

For now, Im flex, waiting on the same info: Before or After

Posted by: 2strok4fun---------------------

C'mon, where is everybody at?

The only place we should here crickets is at camp after everybody goes to bed, including "The Captain".

Besides how rough is DRN style camping?

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

Well Chris - I guess you and I will see each other at Kennedy Meadows !

Posted by: 2strok4fun---------------------

Its because I used here instead of hear............

just imagine....................

smoked salmon, spinach salad with blue cheese, pasta side, finished up with a Anchor porter around the fire............................

Now thats camping.

Posted by: holeshot---------------------

I've tried camping there in a tent and last time I slept in my truck (the worst). I'm not going back there until I get a toy hauler with all the comforts of home (well, not quite all the comforts).

My rekluse equipped CRF would work nice on those kind of trails though - even with stock gearing.

Posted by: kelsorat---------------------

I'm in for any other date than the week before or after the 4th. Sorry

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

Alright - I couldn't really wait any longer so I took off the 5th and the 6th. So I'm in for the 4th and after, not before.

Posted by: scar tissue---------------------

I'm in for the weekend before only. The weeknd after I fly out of town. I'll probrably head up Friday AM and back on Sunday night. I ll be bringing the boys, so I ll be doing more camping than riding.

FYI, sorry for the slow responses, I had to disable my email notification from the site threads as it was jacking up our system.

This is likely the route I will take as well, prolly heading up Thurs AM so the boys can take in some fireworks.

Ill see how this shakes out, but Eric it looks like you and Rhona can stay with us if you wish, or it may be a boys trip. Stay tuned.

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

Chris - we'd love to stay with you and Kim if you have the space. Pencil us in if you do.

Or, if it's a boys trip, I'll likely make it a shorter stay and do a boy's trip as well.

Posted by: Ol'89r---------------------

My neighbor, Masterblaster, and I may come up after the 4th for a couple of days. Even if it's just for Erics cooking.

Zactly-
For me the determination if it is a boys trip or a fam camp is who shows, Kim has no interest in hanging in camp watching the boys while I/we go ride. I need to contact Bundy, Thumbs and crew. What about Natalie? if Nat and the captain go, Kim will prolly set sail.

Terry- would like to see ya up there, what about Elk?

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

Sounds good.

89r - it's Chris', Eddie's, Natalie's, Kav's and Bundy's cooking that you're thinking of - mine is more along the line of what we call "enduro sandwiches" - pre-mades from the Stater Brothers in Mojave !!!!!!

( : Hope to see you there !!!

Posted by: thumbs---------------------

I think we might do the river that weekend but we are still undecided.

Posted by: Ol'89r---------------------

Chris.

Elk said he may come up with a couple friends from work on the weekend after.

Eric. Oh yeah. I forgot, that was Eddie's cooking I was thinking about. Yum. Where's Eddie been? Haven't seen his name in a while.

Anxious to see all you guys again. It's been a long time.

Posted by: dirt bike dave---------------------

I usually come in through Kernville for day trips, and stage near Sherman Peak.

It would be easy to ride from there to meet up with you guys for one day's worth of riding.

Posted by: dirt bike dave---------------------

Here is a pic from late last July. This is Schaeffer Meadow Trail.

A few more pics from the same trip at this link http://www.dirtrider.net/forums3/sh...ide+hot+weekend

Posted by: 2strok4fun---------------------

Hey dave, was that during the KTMtalk ride? The monsoons sure make it nice and cool and improve traction. Come on down the hill, but at this point with no other families going, Ill be more family camping and treking the wife and kids to places that they can ride around, Troy-Fish connector is too much for their current skill set.

A boys trip after the 4th is what I will need to do to get some real riding in.

Posted by: dirt bike dave---------------------

It was just me and 4 friends.

We did have a monsoon that week, so it might have been on the same weekend as the KTM ride. Conditions were just about perfect and as good as it is ever going to be for late July.

I have not been up to the plateau this year, but I'll bet it is dusty already. Not much snow this spring.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

Ok, I'm trying to make it on the 5th and stay over to the 6th. Probably drive up on the 5th and arrive late morning, then my other buddy will be coming up in the evening. We'll stay over till Friday and ride during the day, then drive back in the afternoon. I'll stay in touch with the posts and see where peeps are going to be.

Posted by: MrLuckey---------------------

Right now it looks like I'll be heading up on the 4th or 5th and staying until the 8th.

We need a head count and whoever is the first on the scene to capture an appropriately sized camp spot or two...most likely in Troy overflow!

Anyone know if Fish Creek Overflow is back open yet or not?

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

I'll get back to you on a head count as soon as possible. I may drive back on the 7th instead so I can squeeze out another day!

Posted by: 2strok4fun---------------------

Ill be coming up the 5th and will need space for my 27' trailer. Troy overflow has water spigot near the entrance, so that is handy.

Posted by: KX2fitty---------------------

We might come up on the 5th and 6th, who is going to be there and which camsite? Sorry if I missed these points in the thread.

Posted by: KX2fitty---------------------

Which campground are you all staying at? I want to plan on coming up but I am hesitant to make plans when I don't know anything about where anyone will be staying. Please advise.

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

Folks I'm out. Rhona would like to do something different this year for the holiday and I gotta bite the bullet. Have a blast - hopefully I'll see you next time !

Posted by: 2strok4fun---------------------

Im waffleing, since this was going to be camping for me more than riding, I may nix the bikes all together and head on up to Mammoth Lakes vicinity to fish with the kids. Or I may still drive up to just to camp. Ill let yall know.

Posted by: dirt bike dave---------------------

I'm still in for a day's riding on either the 6th or 7th.

I come in from the west and stage near Sherman Pass Vista, so I won't be camping.

Depending on exactly where I stage, it is about a 10 to 12 mile ride over to Troy Overflow. I could probably be to Troy by 8:30 am and would be happy to hook up with someone to either ride the trails north of Troy, or head back to the far west for trails like Schaeffer Meadow.

So anyone who will be around on the 6th or 7th and wants to start a ride around 8:30 - 9:00 am, please say what day, describe your rig and where you will be at.

Posted by: MrLuckey---------------------

I am going to be getting up there late afternoon on the 4th. I plan to try and get the same spot we had last year at Troy overflow (seemed to work well).

Last I knew Natalie wasn't going to make it this year. Tonia will be coming up sometime Friday and mostly be hanging around camp, hiking with Nikita etc. If I can find a beginner type bike I do plan on getting her on it some though.

I may swing through Troy and check out how many paved spots we could get but I imagine I'll be at the overflow.

Silver Tundra, Black enclosed bike trailer, KTM and a Siberian Husky will be in my camp.

Glad to hear you are coming up Carlo and Terry!!!! Does that mean I need to plan on 1 more Tri-Tip and more mandras lentils?

kx250 - it's nearly impossible to know exactly where we will be...its first come first serve - We'll either be at Troy or Troy overflow (most likely), not hard to find us in either one. Come on up and look for my truck, trailer, bike and dog.

Posted by: Ol'89r---------------------

Looks like Masterblaster and I are out. He has a job lined up for the end of the week and I havn't recieved the tags back for my bike from DMV yet. Damn the DMV!

Could someone tell Carlo how to get to Troy? I usually don't go past Fish Creek by road.

Have fun everyone.

Posted by: dirt bike dave---------------------

Troy Meadow is about 2 miles past Fish Creek on the main road.

The main Troy Meadow campground is north of the road (on the right side as you are coming in).

The Troy Overflow is maybe 1/2 mile south of Troy Meadow (you have to make a left off the main road, heading south). According to the maps, the Overflow is on the Sam Lewis Road, aka 21S97. If you keep going on that road you would hit the Mahogany Creek Trail.

I don't usually ride or drive over that way, but if I remember correctly the signage is good.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

Ok, we are leaving on friday morning early and will be there around 0900. we'll stay over till saturday and ride in the morning then leave. I'll have 3 with me. I'll check back and get the place for camping at the beginning of the week!!

Posted by: dirt bike dave---------------------

For those who have not been up there before, I highly recommend dropping your needle down (aka raising the clip) at least one groove if you are used to riding in the high desert or at Hungry Valley, and two grooves if you ride close to sea level.

If you ride a 450+ thumper, you probably don't have to change your jetting, as you will still have plenty of power for the tight single track.

Some of the trails are 9,000'+ elevation, and the little bikes don't breathe so good up there without a little jetting attention.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

When you say main road, you mean the 9 mile canyon off the 395 one? I looked on the map and saw Kennedy meadows, then further up was fish creek. Am I on the right track? Let me know, thanks. If you have the gps coord's then can those be posted? We will have a motorhome to sleep in so how do we get a campsite or do we just park? And do we need a forestry adventure pass? Thanks
Carlo (Elk)

Posted by: MrLuckey---------------------

Go up 9 mile canyon road, after you descend and its fairly flat the paved road will either go straight or curve to the left. GO LEFT, you will pass the general store (on your right). Follow the paved road and you will first pass Fish Creek on your left, then Troy on your right...Troy overflow is about a mile or two past Fish Creek (entrance on your left). No adventure pass needed and the overflows are free camping. I plan to be there early enough to secure a spot big enough for everyone - just look for my truck, trailer and dog.

Troy overflow is a big loop that ends where it starts, if we get the same spot as last year go left immediately upon entering and we'll be a few hundred yards down on the left, right by a big right hand turn.

Posted by: MrLuckey---------------------

Its been my experience that dropping the needle AND pilot even on 450's is well worth it (possibly the main but you likely won't be on the main jet much). You'll mainly be riding 3-4000 ft above jawbone or hungry valley elevation. Starting the beasts is something you don't want to fight with at 9,000 ft.

Posted by: 2strok4fun---------------------

Your on the right track. Be sure to merge left at the General Store in KM. Troy is just past Fish Creek.

Corner of Troy overflow and road: 36.064531* N 118.240535* W

If you go left imediatly entering troy overflow, there will be a spigot where you can get water so you can drive up dry. 9 mile is a little steep and HOT.

I cant believe it, elk finally makes it up and I wont be there.

Posted by: MrLuckey---------------------

I was up there Tuesday and Wednesday but had to bail and won't make it back up for the weekend. Have fun everyone!
