i was cleaning out my shed and found some mountian bike front tires and got to thinking, why are mountian bike front tires directional and my front dirt bike tires not?? The front wheel in either instances does the same thing, so would a directional front be bettter or worse for moto and trails??

Depends on the rider and application. Stopping can be important also!

my friend races down hill mountain bikes and ive asked him the same thing before, apparently(not 100% sure) all the treads are slightly rounded on one side, causing the bike to roll faster, whereas(once again just speculation)on a dirtbike you dont really need to roll faster, thats what the motor is for

Not all MTB fronts are directional just as not all MX fronts are not directional. Many MX fronts are directional.
