Hey guys, I will be picking up my bike on Monday. I've never owned a motorcycle before, so I need someone to point me in the right direction as far as maintenance and do's and don'ts.

So far I've heard I need to change the oil very often, along with the air filter and adjust the valves every 30 hrs or so.

Like I said, I'm brand new to these things, but I am good with a wrench. I do all my own work on my 97 Camaro and 99 F250 Powerstroke.

Anyway, seems like a pretty cool forum to belong to. Are there any others that would be beneficial?

Thanks!
Steve

An oil change and air filter cleaning after every long ride will go a long way towards keeping the bike in good shape. Lubing and adjusting the chain before every ride will pay dividends as well.

It's worth investing in a factory service manual. In it they have a detailed maintenance schedule that will prove very useful. Another good idea is adding an hour meter to the bike. It will log the engine running time and make it easier to determine when various services need to be performed.

Good luck with new bike. You picked a good one.

LOL...welcome to the end of life as you once knew it, Steve!

Well, I got the bike home today! I have only been able to ride it around on the street a couple of times (and that will be the last time), and I have to say, this bike rocks!

A few questions:
When cold, it's a pain to start. The owner said it's common with 4 strokes. Once it warms up, then it'll start with one kick.

My only concern is there seems to be a coolant leak. The front of the engine is wet and the drip is falling off the lower frame that's in front of the engine.

I'm sure it's something common and simple. I looked at the radiator and the left one has a pretty good dent where it must have gone into the fuel off lever.

Anyway, now I need to get a manual of some sort and figure out how to work on this thing.

Well, I just talked to the local shop and they said that it'll start overheating after a few minutes of idleing once up to temp.

"There's yer problem!"

I'll make sure that's actually what's going on, but I'm sure it is.
