2008. I can't believe it - 2008. I'd honestly like to know how many of my friends out there thought they'd live to see - 2008. 2008!!! And I just celebrated my 45th birthday. 45. 45! 45!! Sheeeeiiiitttt). Well, it's a mixed blessing. I lost my mom in '07 - that has to be the toughest time I've ever been through. Those of you who knew my mom will readily understand where the music came from. Those of you who know my dad will understand why the well never runs dry, Dad likes to work on old cars, and I like to work on old pinball machines, and we're Irish, so we both like to drink. I was working on an album of train songs (the modern world calls 'em CDs, but I still call 'em albums). But when I lost Mom, I started thinking about that part of America that's goin' away... Waylon Jennings , Johnny Carson, Carroll O'Connor, Don Knotts, Roger Miller, Frank Sinatra, Robert Filloon (my friend in Houston who worked 60 hours a week for the Union Pacific Railroad, but still came out to my shows and wanted to hear train songs), Faron Young, John Lennon, Dean Martin, Lefty Frizzell, Lyndon Johnson, Mitch Hedberg, Brother Dave Gardner, Dan Fogelberg, Elmer Richardson (my grandfather, who spent his pre-retirement years doing what he could to help American veterans at the VA hospital in Waco... and from whom, I'm told, I inherited my temper), Wynn Stewart, Townes Van Zandt, Lucille Ball, John Ritter, George Harrison, Ernest Tubb, J.D. and Gladys Everett (my uncle and aunt, who devoted their lives as Baptist evangelists to trudging through the mud and muck of remote central Texas, delivering babies, eulogies, and sermons to help make the path a little lighter for those whose lives they touched), Ronald Reagan, Jim Croce, Bill Hicks, Jimmy Stewart, Chris LeDoux, John Wayne, Gary Stewart, B.W. Stevenson (my old friend, and one of the first to encourage me to pursue a career in music - if he wasn't already dead, I'd KILL him), well... I could go on. My brother Gary and I, we were always listening to music and looking for answers. Gary turned me onto "progressive country" music. I wish he'd been around to hear Angels & Outlaws, Heavy Weather, and Border Radio. He would have liked some of it... and given me a hard time about the rest. Well, time marches on. I ain't gonna lie to you, I miss my mama. So, I've been working on this new albu... uhhhh... CD. It's called "Along Old Fencelines". The title cut goes like this: Along old fence lines truth rings like the music of a mockingbird, and a man is still as worthy as his word... along old fence lines. And I see my grandpa resting by that old Artesian well, ah, there's watermelon dripping down my chin, the ladies in their finest dresses are coming out for church, and so I guess it must be Wednesday evening... along old fence lines. Across old bridges are fragments of a world that didn't turn so fast, but if you were in a hurry, friend, they'd let you pass... across old bridges. And I see those kids on Shetland ponies out near Clifton's Store, the old men playing checkers by the gate, Haggard's singin' "Mama Tried" somewhere along the dial, and so I guess it must be about 1968... across old bridges. There's a place between this two-lane highway and the past, where old friends pass gently through my mind. I see them for a moment, then they slowly slip away, and melt back through the distant lens of time, along old fencelines... across old bridges... down old dirt roads... along old fencelines. That part of America that's going away... that we're throwing away... that doesn't mean anything to most folks today... It still means EVERYTHING to me, and that's what the next BB CD is all about. "Along Old Fencelines"... 'Nuff said. Okay, so everyone knows we've been raising money for Rusty over the past few weeks. Well, I'm proud to announce that Rusty's friends Davin James, Bob Livingston, Ronny Spears, Tommy Alverson, Big John Mills, Randy Meadows, Missoula Slim, Matt Thigpen, and many, many more... will be converging in Houston on Sunday, January 27th for a concert extravaganza, along with yours truly, to raise a few more bucks. Besaw's Café in La Porte will host the next Rusty benefit, and we need YOU to come out and help Rusty on his way to a full and speedy recovery from liver cancer. We're all committed to having one helluva good time... auctioning off CDs, t-shirts, etc... telling Rusty stories that so far, only the CIA has been privy to, singing songs that are illegal in the other 49 states of The Union, and (I believe), hearing (and hugging) Rusty himself. As of this writing, I just got home from the benefit in Dallas, and I can tell you that Rusty was there in rare form and good spirits... and did one HELLUVA show. Meanwhile, I hope some of you will join us at The Back Porch Grill & Tavern this Friday night (1/11) at 9:00 PM for a few songs from BB's next CD, along with some old songs from BB's previous CDs. On Saturday (1/12) I will return to one of my favorite venues: the Crossroads Coffeehouse & Music Co. in beautiful Winnsboro, TX. The CC&M is truly one of the finest listening rooms in the Lone Star State, always a magical night of wine and music in East Texas. Lots of cool stuff coming up in '08, but for now, that's it. Gotta go play some pinball... that's a wrap. God Bless. --BB |
