A good old used 125 2 stroke MXer, older Yamaha IT175, IT200, IT250, or a Kawasaki KDX200, or KDX220 if you can find one for that price.

probobly would want to ride a 125 2 banga for first bike if hes only ridden a auto quad and a 50cc pocket rocket

At his size it would not be much of a problem. You learn the clutch in the first 30 mins of ridding.

too tall for 125 4 stroke, maybe go with a 125cc 2 stroke. my son 13 rides 2004 rm125 and is 5'10" and loves it. we got it as a consignment bike and paid 1100.

If he really wants two stroke then I agree with an old 125. Something like a 1990 YZ 125 could be found in the price range.

If he wants something newer that would be a little easier to learn on and didn't mind a four stroke then I would recommend something like a Yamaha ttr-230. They are a much cheaper model of bike so it wouldn't be as old to drop into the price range. The suspension is not nearly as good as a MX bike but if he isn't riding tracks or getting aggressive on trails it should do fine.
