i am going to be taking the forks apart and re doing them soon, my manual says to use suzuki ss5 fluid...is that a 5 weight fluid? any recomendations of a brand?

Posted by: regal21guy---------------------

im not quite sure but i belive you can use ATF in your forks but I would check on that before you do it .

I wouldn't use ATF in modern cartridge forks. ATF is roughly 15 wt. You'll want something closer to 5 weight fork oil.

how come ?

Posted by: 2strokerfun---------------------

ATF is too thick for most modern dirt bike forks to work correctly. That is what is supposed to be used in my 32-year-old forks.

so what happens ? does it cause things to bind up , or blow fork seals out ? sorry for asking so many questions im just wondering what will happen .

Mainly stiff works with poor rebound.

Just hit up a motorcycle shop and buy proper suspension fluid in 5wt. the shops typically only carry 1 brand so your usualy stuck with what they carry. If you want the same performance in your forks then stick with the 5wt. if you want them stiffer go with 7.5 or squishyer go with lighter... More bottoming resistance slightly more fluid...Whatever the viscosity of ATF is its not likely to be the same as was in there. I had thought ATF was 7.5wt but don't know for sure. It sure seems lighter than any 15wt oil...

ATF is generally 7.5wt.
