aftermarket fuel screw fell out

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

any1 have any tips on how to keep this from happening agan?

Don't screw it out past 2 turns. If the screw needs to come out farther then you should be bumping up the pilot jet.

it wasnt out that far,it fell out 1/2 way thru the moto

Something is wrong with that scenario. You must have left out the rubber o-ring or washer or tension spring or all three when you installed the after market fuel screw.

The above statement about bumping the pilot if your more than two turns out is an other good piece of info, personally I use 2.5 turns or more but 2.0 is fine. If it's out further than that there isn't enough tension from the spring to keep things snug.

I had the same problem with the aftermarket fuel screw on my CRF450R. It was only about 1.75 turns out and it still got so loose it just about fell out after about 15 minutes. What I ended up doing was stretching the stock spring and that put enough tension on the screw to keep it from vibrating out. I read about this somewhere else online where people had the same problem and did the same thing to fix it. I also wired mine in place for a while but it has been staying put for over a year now.

Don't get pissy, I've seen it several times. If you're up for another after market screw try stretching the spring about an 1/8 of an inch or put a very small amount of silicone sealant on the thread of the fuel screw. The sealant won't lock the screw but it will prevent it from vibrating out.

Hopefully you can buy the three missing OEM parts from your dealer.

Do not count on that. I have seen some aftermarket fuel screws that just fit crappy. Some come with yet another o ring that slides up into the counter bore and stops it from vibrating out. One was so bad I yanked it out and stuck the stock screw back in. Account for the smallest o ring, atop the fuel screw, mis alignment can force parts of it into the passage and can be a nightmare removing all the pieces. I have seen where riders have filled the counter bore up with silicone also, it seemingly worked. The only way to get them iddy biddy parts is order the mixture screw set.

Yep, that's the only way I've seen it too.

I bought an after market fuel screw for my RMZ. It's generic for all CR carbs. It sucks, very temperamental on adjustment and quite different than the stock screw. Better off to use a special long curved fuel screw screw driver and the stock screw.

some fuel screws are threaded differently so the number of turns may be different than stock.

I call BS on that statement!

If it was threaded differently it wouldn't screw in. The length and taper of the tip may be different and is in my case but the threads are the same...

If you have a friend or can do it yourself just make and adapter for the stock screw. This can be done easily on a lathe, mine was built in 1944, out of a piece of hex brass. Epoxy the stock fuel mixture screw in the adapter and adjust it anytime just like the generic screws. I found that most of the companies that make the screws can't program the CNC to make an exact replica of the stock screw. To get it right just do it yourself and save some money. Hell a kid can make one in shop class at high school!
