93 KLX 650 Starting issues

Anyone else have an older KLX that has a problem starting it? It almost seems like the choke doesn't work, but I have not tore into the carb yet. Just wanted to get some opinions. I do smell gas when the choke is on, which leads me to believe that it is getting gas, but maybe there is a secret sequence to starting it like turning the throttle twice, while standing on 1 foot, and singing a happy song.Thanks!
Yes this is my first thumper, I am still 2 smokin in the dirt!!

Start from scratch and cover all the bases. Has this been a new problem, did it run before? Does it have a key? Check to see of there's a spark, pull the plug, clean the carb, change the gas, check the valves. You have alot to check on but not doing it is an endless battle. Good luck.

It ran when I picked it up (3 days ago) and I can get it to run. It just turns over and will not pop. I am going to change the oil, spark plug, gas and also clean the carb. I have never checked the valves on a 4 stroke, but I am also going to order a manual today so I can check that as well. Thanks for the help!
