Hey all... My birthday just passed and I got some money to spend and I'm def on planning to get a dirtbike... but I'm not quite sure which one to get.. I'm thinking either a used (2000-2003) yz250 or kx250 but I dont know which one is better or if that bike is the right size... can you guys please help me out??
1) your physical size : 6'2 about 190-195lbs..
2) How physical / aggressive are you ? havent rode in a while but planning on being pretty aggressive..
3) what do you plan to ride- MX/SX tracks, woods, fields with friends or ????? prob gonna ride in trails/dirt with friends
4) Do you have any riding experience? had a BW 80 when I was a kid.. hadnt rode since then
5) Do you think you will race ? no
6) Are you mechanically inclined and will you be doing your own bike work? willing to try to
7) Do YOU have a preferance to a brand/ motor choice (2 or 4 stroke)? doesnt matter to me..
8) Do you have a dealer close by your home that you might use and what brand(s) does he carry? yes but planning on getting used.. not new
9) How much ($) do you plan to spend on a bike? no more than 2300
10) Do you live in California? no
11) Your age? 20
12) anything else that you think would help form an opinion
i was thinkin to pick either between Yamaha or Kawasaki but you guys let me know whats up.. thanks

the 250's will do fine. as allways it will take some time getting used to. but your size will be best suited to a 250. as to teh brands, i prefer yamaha or honda. not a big green fan but its all up to you and whats available. you should be able to find a very decent 01-02 250 for around 2300. I saw your post before the edit, the differences between 4 and 2 strokes are rapidly diminishing. i personally like the 2 strokes, less money, but the 4 strokes are also nice. i would stick with the 2 strokes unless you have the oportunity for a 250 four stroke. good luck in finding one. the yz 250 is a particularly nice bike

yaa so right now my 2 choices are prob either gonna be a yz250 or yz250f.. correct me if Im wrong but a yz250 is 2 stroke and a yz250f is a 4 stroke? which do you think would be more reliable? also I'm new into the dirt bike stuff after many years so which might be easier to work on? Thanks

yes, you are correct. two strokes (yz) would be easier to work on, they are a lot simpler. 4 strokes (yzf) tend to be heavier, more complicated and a lot more inconvenient to work on. as for reliable. depends on how well you maintain the bike, the 2 stroke could run for years and years if you maintained it corectly. but generally four strokes, at least their topends, last longer. >pat

The newer YZ250F's (four strokes) are not the least bit clunky or heavy. They are very lightweight and handle like a dream. I would go with a YZ250 for sure, but weather to go with a 250F or a 250 depends on your riding. The 250F will not have as much power as the 2-stroke version will, it will have much smoother and more predictable power. The 2-stroke requires the rider to pay a little more attention, and is much kickier. It is not for the laid back or inexpirienced rider. Personally, I think the 2-strokes are way more fun, but it is up to you
