4-stroke battery question.

Hey all,

My 4-stroke came with a new battery that I have to physically put the acid into the battery etc..

What's a good alternative for a battery that has no maintainance etc? I want something completely sealed. No fuss.

I take it they use these kinds of batterys because they are cheap? who wants to deal with dangerous acid etc.

Can anyone list several options for replacement?

thanks,

DJN

Yuasa usually has sealed, maintenace free batteries available for most popular models. Check their website.

Gell Battery?

Most of the motorcycle batteries are "semi-sealed", which means that they won't spill any significant amount of acid if they are tipped over.

It may be possible to find an AGM or Gel battery, but it is going to be expensive!

Wait, so the dealership didn't put the battery together?
thats weird...

well don't let putting the battery acid into the battery scare you to the point of buying a new (expensive) battery when you have a perfect one allready.

If the top of your battery looks like this http://www.motorcyclebatteriesusa.c...es/YTX9-BSA.gif here is what you do.

1) peel the red aluminum tape with the chinese lettering off.
2) Take your acid pack and carefully pull the black plastic cover that says "do not open" off. (keep this piece)
3) With your battery upright on a flat, solid surface, line up the ends of the acid pack with the angle cut tube things coming out of the battery from underneath where the red aluminum tape with the chinese lettering was.
4) Once you have it all lined up good, with the acid pack vertical, give the top of the acid pack a good hit with the palm of your hand.
5) Check to see that the all the acid is draining into the battery.
6) If not, wiggle the acid pack slightly.
7) wait a couple of minutes for all the acid to drain into the battery.
8) Remove acid pack from top of battery.
9) now take the black cover (that says "do not open") and put it on top of the angle cut tubes, pushing each individual cover equally. Take the back side of a screwdriver or something and push it down just a little bit all the way across, and keep doing that untill it is completely on.
10) Charge the battery.
11) Wash your hands

If you get battery acid on your clothes, the next time you wash them there may be little holes in your clothes.

If you get battery acid on your skin, wash it off with soap and water immediatley. If you wash it off the worst that is going to happen is it will be itchy for a while. Maybe wear Eye Protection, cus I can't imagine it would feel good in there. If washed off quickly, battery acid won't neccissarily mutate you or anything like that. After a while, it just turns to distilled water anyways. But still, be careful.

Thanks alot for the info guys. Everything went well. I didn't realize that once you put the acid in and seal it, that it never needs matainance again. pretty easy.

Very nice info cabot! I bet alot of people will find that helpfull.

Thanks again!

Hi All,just a bit of advice on 4t batteries. I had to replace my CRF450X battery and suffered financialy. I have been told that once you let your battery run flat a few times you can start using it for a small boat anchor. I then promptly bought a special bike charger(name slip my mind now) that you hook a set of leads permanently to your bike, with a plug, inside airbox cover, that you connect when you park the scoot. These chargers monitor the batterys state and charge on demand, thus not overcharging. as these batteries are supposed to be charged @3 Amps for 30minutes or 0.5Amps for 3 hours, no longer, otherwise you can do the anchor thing again.
