Anything in So. Cal this weekend?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: JWW---------------------

Looking for a ride on Sat or early Sunday.

Posted by: brett r---------------------

TWMC @ Cougar Buttes, it's going to be hot race starts @ 8am sun.

Posted by: JWW---------------------

Yeah

I wont be able to make the enduro. I need to be back at my house by noon on Sunday.

Have fun though

Posted by: LongTime---------------------

wanna do an easy, back-in-the-saddle, gimpy Corona/Saddleback ride Sunday morn?

Posted by: JWW---------------------

..

Posted by: LongTime---------------------

The mtn. separating OC from Corona. Looks like a saddle from the OC side. Terry thinks he can find the old mx par, too -- sort of a sightseeing thing. Don't know if he can go Sun. am though. . . .

Posted by: JWW---------------------

Ok Sounds good to me. Is that around the area we went to last time?

I am green sticker only so you guys gotta keep that in mind

I don't mean to barge in or anything but where are you guys talking about? Somwhere between I15 and I5 in the mtns? I thought all of that was off limits now a days. I'll probably either be at the track in Elsinore or maybe trail riding in Lake Morena.

Where is Lake Morena??

I am not familiar with anything south of me.

Posted by: sirhk100---------------------

Lake Morena is a OHV area out on I8 East of San Diego. It's just a little ways past Pine Valley if you look on a map in the Mtns. It's basically up on top and over looks The Desert. You Exit on Buckman Springs rd. and head south about a mile or 2 and then you'll see signs for the park. I went out there a couple weeks ago for the first time and definately plan on going back.

Posted by: Ol'89r---------------------

Jeff & sirhk. The area LT is talking about is west of the 15 freeway. It is the Cleveland National forest. You should be street legal to be up there. Key word, (Should)

Saturday would be a better day for me, but, I will see if I can make it sunday.

Posted by: fred2---------------------

So the riding is pretty good there? Could you tell me a little bit about it? Hills? Jumps? Sand? Dirt? Is it crowded?

I'd like to do an early ride on Sunday. When are you going out Khris? That looks like about an 1 1/2 hour drive for me.

Posted by: sirhk100---------------------

Well, I've only been there once a couple of weeks ago. It's defanately a legal area. It's designated an OHV park. We rode for a couple of hours and it was fun. The stuff we were on was mtn. trails. Fire roads that conected to jeep trails and some single track stuff. No real jumps. There was a camping area and the trails lead right up to a lake to fish on. It was not crowded at all and the weather was perfect. I would suspect that it could get pretty warm up there but that's true at almost any of the riding areas in SoCal. I'm planning on riding somewhere on Sunday but havn't made up my mind as to where yet. If people are interested in meeting up there I'll go. Like I said though, I'm not an expert on the area and it would be as much of you exploring the area as me. If I don't go there, I'll probably end up at the Elsinore track unless I here of something else going on. My bike is Green stickered and I'd be interested in riding anywhere with in an hour and a half of North San Diego. I'll keep my eyes on this thread to see what developes. Let me know if your interested in going up to Lake Morena. I'd be happy to meet you guys there, I'm always looking to meet new riders.

Posted by: fred2---------------------

Khris,

That sounds great! Unless my wife disaproves I'd like to ride Lake Morena Sunday morning. We're doing the Father's day thing on Saturday this year. Would you be up for getting there as early as possible? I'm also green stickered and I don't want to spend more than 1/2 a day riding. Elsinore is just about the same distance for me but I'd rather do Morena. Let me know and we'll meet up somewhere.

Posted by: sirhk100---------------------

Crap, I forgot about the fathers day thing!! I think I'm supposed to meet my parents for breakfast. I can try to make that as early as possible and get up there. Let me talk with them this evening and see what their plans are. what part of SD are you in? I live up in Ramona and the plans were to meet my parents for breakfast in Poway Sunday morning. I'll work on that though. I'll post a reply tomorrow and let you know what I can do. I ususally try to get out as early as possible but this may be one day that I can't do it.

Posted by: JWW---------------------

Sorry to wuss out on you guys but Lake Morena is to far for Sunday (gotta be home by noon) and I dont feel like running from the police this weekend.

If anyone would like to come up to Cajon Pass I could do that early

I know I am being picky but my wifes made me swear to be there when her parents arrive. Between the injury and losing my riding partener I havent been able to get out much.

I am open for Saturday though

Posted by: fred2---------------------

Khris,

I hear ya. I'm in Carlsbad but I really don't want to ride Elsinore. Let me know what your plans are.

Posted by: fred2---------------------

RMJeff,

How far would Cajon Pass be from Carlsbad? Sounds like a long drive for me. But I would be interested at some other date maybe.

Posted by: JWW---------------------

Not sure on the distance from Carlsbad but if it helps it about 20 minutes from Ontario.

Anytime you wanna go up there let me know.

Posted by: fred2---------------------

RMJeff,

That looks like about a 2 hour drive. How far off of the 15 is it? It takes my less than an hour to get to Temecula. Is it pretty good riding there? Sounds like a lot of fun. I think you mentioned it was more sight seeing than anything.

Posted by: tristan68---------------------

RMJEFF,

where do you get off at on the Cajon Pass, off oak hill? i'm curious about that area as i see people out there while i go up the hill to visit my parents in victorville. would like some info on directions to riding areas, what exit to take and where to go from there.

Exit the 15 North at 138 (just past the truck scales). Just along the on ramp for the 15 north there is a small dirt road. So From the 15 N exit go across 138 like you are getting back on the freeway. Just as you come to the ramp move to the right and you will see the access road. Take that road until you come to the 2nd railroad bridge. Stage there and continue up the road on your bikes.

The trail will take you under the freeway and up the mtns. toward Phelan. I think its about 15 miles round trip.

The only bad thing is oncoming traffic. You really need to pay attention. The trail runs along the ridges so if you happen to fall off the trail it could be along way down.

If you get tired the fire roads also lead back.

Jeff

Posted by: AMinkman---------------------

Fred, I live in Apple Valley. You should be within an hour and a half. Sorry to bump in

Posted by: Tony Williams---------------------

Cajon Pass is quite a drive for us in San Diego. For those of us in North County, have you guys considered Barona Oaks or Amago?

Tony (Poway area)

Posted by: fred2---------------------

Barona Oaks or Amago? Where is that Tony? I was talking to my neighbor last night and Cajon pass should be about a 2 hour drive for me.

I got SA, spousal approval, to ride Saturday morning. I'd really like to ride and hopefully pretty early. Like maybe by 8am? Any takers? Khris mentioned Lake Morena, that sounds great. Tony mentioned Barona Oaks or Amago. I'm ready to go so let me know.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

Just a side note for you guys in SD County, if you go to Temecula and head East on 79, there is a great riding area right by Vail Lake on the right side of the road. The trails run next to the road for miles and there is all kinds of riding. Thomas Guide map page 409 in Riverside County. I don't think it's a bust there, seen lots of riders but no law. Just a suggestion to save on a long trip. Cya

What do you mean? Aren't you the father? Isn't it your day?

Well then, how about Saturday?

Posted by: fred2---------------------

Anyone up for riding at the place that a454elk mentioned? Has anyone ridden there?

Posted by: sirhk100---------------------

Saturday's a bust for me. Gotta do some work to the Explorer to get it back in towing condition so that I can get my bike to whereever I end up on Sunday. I also need to yank the swingarm off my bike to grease all the linkage and put on my new TM Designworks chain slider so the grooves in my swingarm don't get any deeper. Barona Oaks and Amago are tracks. Last time I tried going to Barona they wouldn't let me ride cause of my 4 stroke. I guess they have or had rules against noise emmision and my stock YZ400 exhaust is too loud for them. How is Amago, I've never been there but have heard it's usually not too crowded? My parents said I could skip out on breakfast Sunday morning but gave me a little grief about it so I'm thinking it'll be better to meet them and postppone my riding till afterwards. Gotta keep up the family relations. Sorry Fred if this means it's too late for you.
A454ELK,
I've heard there is tons of riding area in Temecula and Elsinore other then the track but don't know where. If you could maybe enlighten us as to some more spots that aren't to looked down upon by the law that would be cool.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

OK, here's the secret poop! The area by Vail Lake is great, never seen a bust there. It's about 20 or so minutes East of Temecula on 79. You'll find a nice area to park of the right side of the road, just look for the open area, you'll see it. The other place in Elsinore is cool, you can ride all the way to Canyon Lakes. Get off at Central from the 15 and look to the right after about a mile or so. Work your way back to there and you'll find a river bed. That whole area is great, a little rocky at times. Never had a bust there. Stay South of Central and East of the 15 and you are good to go. Follow the trails East and you'll find Canyon Lakes. !!!!

Posted by: sirhk100---------------------

Awesome!!! Maybe I'll check out both places this Sunday. I live in Ramona so I can just head up to Dudleys and jump on that end of 79. Shouldn't be too far from there. I could make one big loop.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

Good luck. When you're ready for another area in Phelon, let me know. It's just off the 395 and the I-15 past the Cajon Pass. If you like exploring, the elsinore ride is better. You can go on forever as long as you head East and stay south of 79. You'll see. We'll hook up sometime and get a group together and shoot out to Phelon!

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

Oh yeah, I forgot. It's not the best area for 2 strokers but I'm going on Monday morning to the Ortega Highway. At the top of the crest near the Orange county line, there is a road called Kilsner Trail. If you take that until it ends, it dumps you into a camping and OHV park riding area. Lots of great stuff to ride on and around. They even have a junior track tolet the little scramblers ride on. I'll be there with my little girl on her new xr100 around 8ish or so. Anyone is welcome if you can blow off work for that morning. I'm also going to Elsinore track on Tuesday morning. Look for the white 66 el camino and stop by and say hey!

Posted by: sirhk100---------------------

I'm not too familiar with the Phelon area. I'm hoping to do a trip on Friday the 13th in July with some guys from the Thumper Talk forums. I need to get a desert tank before then though and I'm kinda tight for money with some unexpected vehicle repair bill and other stuff. They meet at some McDonalds up north of Glen Helen and ride up into the mtns or something. I'm not sure. It's a great group to ride with though so I'm really hoping to make it. Do you ride the tracks often or are you strictly trails? During the season I head out to Ocotillo Wells a ton. I love the area and we occasionally do a run out to superstition. I go to Glamis about 3 times a year. Usually Thanksgiving, New Years, and Pres. Day. Pres. Day is the only time I take my bike though cause the other 2 weekends are stupidly crowded and I'd rather get hit by a drunk in my Explorer or Jeep then on my bike.

Posted by: sirhk100---------------------

Unfortunately I've got the typical Mon-Fri 8-5 job and I'm too new to be taking days off for riding but by July 13th I should be able to pull that one. I don't want to make a habit though cause then it'll probably turn into a drug for me and I'll get addicted or something. Ditching work to ride is probably a good thing only in moderation for my position.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

Later fellow riders, going to Chapparel for some goodies!

Posted by: sirhk100---------------------

Ohhhhh, I see how it is!! That's cool cause I bought my goodies yesterday so HA!! Later!

You can now ride the four strokes at Barona.... check 'em out at:

www.baronaoaks.com

It's just a few miles south of the town of Ramona, and yes, it's a motocross track. The four stroke issue was more or less a political one that appears to have been resolved for now.

Amago is another track on the La Jolla Indian Reservation, about 20 miles east of I-15 on highway 76. It has never been crowded, per se, but I've seen it steadily getting busier and busier.

If anybody would like to meet up sat or early sunday at 15 and 138 call me at 909-322-9614.

Its required to have a green sticker and spark arrestor

How was everyone's rides this weekend? I went to Elsinore early Saturday morning with my neighbors. Good times but it was HOT!!! I've become a little too used to the coastal living.

Let's keep communicating so that we can all get together sometime. I'm a little new to the riding here in So. Cal and anxious to ride.

I never did find anybody ride with but spotted a good deal a new XR100 for my son. Hope to get it by the end of the week.

Posted by: fred2---------------------

I'm taking off July 2 - 6 and would like to go riding one of those days. Any takers? Don't know when where or what time I'll be able to go so let's start making some plans. I know this is a little early but I have the bug.

RMjeff,
good luck with the XR.

Posted by: sirhk100---------------------

I went to Elsinore on Sunday. It was hot but barable. Good riding until I got a flat tire and it was just too hot to repair track side so I went home, cleaned up and headed to the beach. I wanted to go check out the trails described above but all my friends were busy and couldn't get out so I figured it wouldn't be wise to go check out a new scene alone. Definately keep the thread going or updated on weekend events!!

Posted by: JWW---------------------

My son comes into town next Sunday for the summer. After that we will be spending our weekends at El Mirage. It will be hot but excellent place for the kids to ride.

If you wanna stop by feel free.

Posted by: LongTime---------------------

Jeff -- I'll definitely hook up out at El Mirage with my boy. Fred -- maybe a Corona run? I'll have company for several weeks, so riding time will be limited, but Corona's close enough for a half-day ride to fit in. PM me.

Posted by: Ol'89r---------------------

Didn't go, everyone bailed.

If you guys want to do a late afternoon Corona ride during the week, let me know.

Posted by: placelast---------------------

Get off your rocker & empty your (DRN) mailbox. It's full - not accepting any new messages...

(BTW, we plan on doing Big Bear; won't know 4 sure until the day B4 or so.)

Posted by: fred2---------------------

LongTime,

Maybe Corona? Sounds like fun. I think you guys sent some directions but could you send them again? Like I said I'm taking off July 2-6 and my wife will probably let me do at least a half day ride somewhere. No chance of getting her out there. Maybe one of those days would be great!!!! How hot is it up there? The weather in Elsinore was about all I could take this weekend.

Longtime

I could not get the pm to work so here it is.....My son comes in Sunday night so we will go out to El Mirage on the 30th. I hope to have the other bike before he gets here. It will probably be a little big but he is beating the heck out of the PW.

I will have the PW out there if you still want your son to try it.

We normally get out there around 8 and stay until 2 or 3.

Jeff

Placelast.

Can't seem to delete messages from personal message feature. Says I have 10 old messages, but, when I try to bring them up it says 0 messages in inbox. Thought it was an old guy thing at first, ya know like a brain fart. also, they changed my medication here at the old folks home. So, I talked to Okie and he said it was a glitch in the system. Anyway, my pm box won't accept any new messages. E-mail me.

Hope you and the boys can make it to Big Bear.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

Well, hope the weekend went well for all. I rode at Ortega on Monday and Elsinore track Tues. The track was great, a little hot after 11 but still got some great riding in. Oh, picking up my new rm250 tomorrow at Chaparrel. I knew I shouldn't have gone there! Ouch. Anyway, they were blowing them out for $3998, couldn't resist. I'll be out of the riding scene for a couple of weeks so enjoy all. My daughter rode her xr100 for the first time on Monday. Got to say, for a girl, not bad but she did eat a pine tree on one of her runs. Oh well, you ain't a rider until you've eaten a pine needle or two! Cya

Posted by: sirhk100---------------------

That sounds like a really cheap price. Good deal!! Keep it posted on riding. It would be cool to keep this thread going. I try to get out somewhere at least one day every weekend. Unfortunately I can't get out on weekdays.

Posted by: fred2---------------------

I agree. Maybe we should have our own forum under "Places To Ride"?

Posted by: JWW---------------------

I passed those RM's when I was there lasst weekend. I had to walk back and make sure I didnt misread the tag.

Posted by: Mx Dude---------------------

I'll be headed out to Sunrise (Adelanto) this Saturday morning (6/23)......so if any of you So Cal. mx'ers are thinking about heading out that way let me know. Come early cause I'm sure it'll be HOT

See ya out there
