i cant seem to get the bike started its in neutral and the fuel is on is there any priorities i need to take caution to this is my first bike by the way.

What kind of bike is it. Have you tried giving it choke. Is there a key that you arnt turning on.
Did you get it used or new.

If you got it used did the guy have it running
Is there spark.
Is the carb clean.

^ pretty much covered all the basics

Posted by: oubowtie06---------------------

yea i bought it used i didnt do the choke maybe that will work

Posted by: oubowtie06---------------------

how do i know if the bike is in neutral when the bike is not running for instance when i start it should it be in neutral and how do i know if it is?when i get going is it kick peg up to go into 2nd or kick it down to go to second? and after second which way is it up or down to third? imma first time rider so i am asking all the questions i can.

Posted by: Slipzz---------------------

In neutral u can move the bike and start it without the clutch in.....usually it's 1 down 4 up to shift

Posted by: oubowtie06---------------------

so when i want to go up a gear click up and to down shift click down easy enough and now what kind of gas should i run if its a 4 stroke is there a certain octane or does it not really matter?

It would help if we knew what model bike we are talking about here, TTR? YZ?

If you didn't get a owners manual with your bike you should go to your local dealer and order one. Sit down and read it and then read it again. It will explain all of the basics.

Posted by: oubowtie06---------------------

the bike is a yz250f i called the dealer about it and the bike is used and they said since its an 05 they couldnt get one but if some one could just maybe give me a run through on the basics i would greatly appreciate it thanks guys.

It seems to me like you need an experienced riding buddy

Pull the choke out all the way, make sure the gas is on, and try to start it.

If no start after a lot of kicks, pull the spark plug and make sure it's sparking. Did the bike run when you got it? Did you test ride it?

There's really not much to them. It's either fuel or spark..

That's a load of crap.

The Yamaha part number for the service manual for your bike is LIT-11626-18-48 . Click the link below and you can order one today from Service Honda/Yamaha

to test for spark go to a local automotive store and get a spark tester. It should have a clip at one end to touch the engine and a thing that goes into the spark plug cap. give a few kicks if you see spark then its ok. did the guy have it sitting for a long period of time. if he did you might need to clean the carb. and did the guy you bought it off of have it running. Did you ever see it run. Are you sure your just not kicking it hard enough.

Posted by: oubowtie06---------------------

i bought the bike form baker boys yamaha here in oklahoma he never started it for me and i tried kicking it and it sounded like it wanted to start then i pushed the choke in and it died but ill check the spark plug where is it located??

Posted by: Cabot---------------------

Well, you should never buy a bike without at least seeing it run.
Your probably going to pull the gas tank off to get to the spark plug. Your owners manual should explain how to do this, but i'm not sure. If it doesn't you would be greatly benefitted by purchasing a service manual as well. Clymer makes great service manuals that are easy to understand.
Carb clean, try draining the gas and putting new gas in. Use premium, its only like 20 cents more then regular and Yamaha more then likely reccomends it.

If all else fails, your valves could be out of adjustment...

Try fresh gas, choke on, two turns of the throttle, REMOVE YOUR HAND FROM THE THROTTLE, slowly push on the kickstarter till you get firm resistance and give it a strong full kick. I wouldn't recommend going after the spark plug until you have read the manual.

Posted by: CousinLarry---------------------

You bought a bike from a shop and they never even started it for you? How much did you buy it for? That's pretty shady, and I can't believe someone would buy a bike without even making sure it runs!

Unless it was sold as is and they said it wasn't running or something...

Posted by: oubowtie06---------------------

well i rode the bike for the first time today it runs good i went through all the gears everything is smooth i killed a few times but who doesnt the first time your on your first bike the only problem is getting it started back up again i had a hell of a time starting it back up after i killed or if i just took a break after riding
