Hi I am looking at getting a second hand Yamaha Wr250f... And obviously am wondering how many km/miles is too much for a 2005 bike? Is about 2500km (1553 miles) too much?
Thanks for your help!!!

Has the top end been rebuilt at all?
Keep in mind that a typical dirt bike has no odometer or hour meter so most of the time you are in the dark as to how many hours it has on it. If it has been properly maintained then I wouldn't think that it was too much. 1500 miles in three years = 500 miles a year. I am guessing that I put a little more than that on my bike each year.
If it has been properly maintained then I would say it is probably fine.

First of all, miles should not be the first thing you should be looking it. Yeah, it makes a difference, but there are other more important factors.
One factor is price, No amount of miles is going to defer me from buying a used bike if the price is right.
Another factor (more important then price) is maintanance. How many times has the oil been changed in those 1550 miles?
Less then three and I'd probably stay away.
What condition is the bike in? Overall condition/cleanliness? How are the tires? How is the chain and sprockets?
Any engine work (maintanance) done? if not, its probably due for at least new piston rings, maybe more.
Checking all these things will give you an idea of what its worth, and what you will have to spend on it after it is in your garage..

Thanks for your reply...
A few bikes i have looked at have had top end rebuilds, is this a bad thing?
Thanks again!

Top end rebuilds means (usually) new piston and rings. Sometimes it can mean new valves, etc. Sometimes it means a new head and cylender, but not usually.
It is usually a good thing because the top end wears out on these bikes kind of fast, and it needs to be rebuilt occasionally.

so how often do they usually need to be rebuilt? And does it mean other things might go wrong if the top end has been rebuilt?
Thanks

Bike with high performance engines (which the WR has) usually recommend changing the piston fairly often. For example, KTM recommends every 15 hours for racing conditions and 30 hours for trail riding use.
If the piston was changed as part of preventative maintenance then it is a really good thing. First off, it indicates that the owner maintains his bike. Second, it means that the piston isn't worn out. There shouldn't be any negative ramifications unless they messed something up in the process.
On the other hand, if the top end was rebuilt because the maintenance was ignored until the engine seized then it indicates other things, like the owner didn't keep up with the maintenance. When the piston seized it could have damaged other things, certainly the cylinder, the heads could easily have been damaged and there could have been damage to the lower end. If it was all repaired properly then even that is no big deal.
If the top end has never been rebuilt then I would recommend that you do it right away. Just factor the cost of the rebuild into the selling price.
