That's an understatement!

Thanks for posting the pics Max.

Okie.

I would like to keep this as the official Bonneville project thread for those that may be interested in following the project. If that's ok?

A little history.

My lifelong friend and mentor, Danny Macias was in the process of rebuilding this bike to take to Bonneville and break the record he set on the bike many years ago. He passed away before completing the project. I have taken on the project and plan on completing the bike and taking it to Bonneville to break Dannys original record.

As you can see, the bike is in the early stages of completion. The engine is nearly assembled and just needs to be timed and run in on the dyno.

The frame is another story. Only have the bare frame, gas tank, oil tank and front end. Going to have to make a seat and maybe a new gas tank since the tank Danny made may not hold enough fuel for the class we intend to run. Need to lace up a set of wheels and also build some rear-set pegs and build a set of pipes. Also, have to devise an ignition system. Other than that, the project is almost done.

The bike is a 350cc Triumph twin. It is originally a single carburetor engine. If you look closely at the pics, you can see where Danny machined the head and welded in tubing to make it a two carb, (Splayed) head. The carburetors are Amal GP's.

We will add more pics as things progress.

Also, if anyone reading this has any experience with running a bike at Speed Week, please contact me or chime in on this thread. I am a total newby at running at Bonneville and I have many questions for anyone experienced in this area.

The other bike (frame) in the photos is a 1968 Triumph Bonneville that is in the process of being restored for a customer. The scarlet and silver gas tank belongs to the '68 Bonneville.

The front hub in the photo is one that Danny machined himself. That is just one example of the quality of work the man did.

To be continued.

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

That hub is beautiful. Thanks for keeping us updated.

Posted by: Rich Rohrich---------------------

This is already my favorite thread EVER on DRN

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Transforming it from one to two carbs seems like a huge deal. Is it as tough as I would imagine and how much benefit would you expect from doing it?

It is very involved Mike. Requires quite a lot of machine work and tig welding.

The benefits are enormous. The single carb head works ok for the stock engine. But, when you increase the lift and duration on the cams and install big valves and port the head, the stock single carb set-up is woefully inadequate. Making these engines breathe is part of the secret to making horsepower.

The hub in the picture has a story also. When CAD-CAM technology came about, Danny bought books and tapes and self-taught himself the technology. He went out and bought a CNC lathe and mill and was soon pumping out beautiful front and rear hubs to sell to race teams. Guys like the late Ricky Graham (SP?) used his hubs on his factory team Honda RC 750 twin dirt tracker on his way to earning the National number one plate. Danny was responsible for the success of many top national stars.

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------

Wow! Did you get a rear hub? Who is going to pilot? Getting an electric system, going how big? Engine management big? Sure like to get you at a table with Dr.Dave from Precision Auto Research, and tell him to bring a barrel of fuel! Who got the NC Work Center?

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Ol'89r is the perfect pilot...lightweight, highly skilled, and more balls than brains.

Foxforks.

The rear hubs are too big for chassis. I may not be able to use the front hub either since it is too wide for the forks. I really don't want to machine it to fit or alter it in any way.

Like Gomer said, I'm not the sharpest tool in the box so, unless I can find someone lighter and dumber, I will pilot the bike myself.

The electrical system will be similar to the stock system. Just won't be using Lucas parts.

The CNC work center is still for sale. Danny had a beautiful CNC mill and lathe. Actually several lathes. All of his equipment is for sale. If anyone is interested, PM or email me and I can put you in touch with his son-in-law who is liquidating his equipment.

In my twisted logic those Joe Hunt magnetos are tops because they cost so dang much. I'm just sayin'

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------

Do you have to run points also? You are running in a special class? With a bunch of guidelines? That had to be one heck of a job putting the other intake in.

The ignition we will be running is a very simple system. It will be a Total Loss System. Points or an electronic pick-up system with a dual coil and hot-charged 12 volt battery. Mags are great and I have an ARD mag that we could use but, mags and charging systems drain horsepower. A Total Loss System doesn't use any horsepower to produce spark.

For a bike that only does short runs, like a Bonneville bike or a drag racer, total loss is the best way to go. IMO.

FoxForks. Figuring out what class to run in is the hardest part of this whole deal. There are several different organizations that use the salt flats. They all have different rules for the different classes. They all use Bonneville at different times for their speed trials.

When Danny originally built and ran the bike, the rules were different than they are now. I have no doubt we can break his old record since there are many changes allowed in the engine now, than were allowed back then. The problem is figuring out what class and what organization the bike fits in without having to remake the whole bike.

Good reading

Posted by: nachtsheim---------------------

Terry,
I finally found the thread that you told me about. The pictures look good. Looks like your about twice as far along as I am. You've got an all-together engine and a frame w/front end, gas and oil tank. I've got an all-apart engine, wheels and tires, a front end, but no frame yet, no gas tank, and no oil tank.

George

Posted by: Ol'89r---------------------

Hi George.

Glad you found the thread.

Fortunately for me, Danny had most of the engine done already. Just needs to be timed, jetted and dyno'ed.

The frame was another story. In the photos, the front end was just hanging on the frame. I had to machine some spacers and re-thread the stem to make it fit. Also had to build a set of clip-on's and fork stops. I now have the front end mounted, the seat is 90% done, the rear sets are 80% done, the engine mounts are made and the engine is in the frame.

Still have to devise the ignition system and build a set of wheels and exhaust pipes. Will probably have to re-make the gas tank that Danny made since it doesn't hold enough fuel according to the rule booK.

I will get Max over here to take and post some more photos.

Hope to have the bike ready to display in the annual Trailblazers MC banquet and bike show on April 4th in the city of Carson California. Then it will be coming back apart to get it ready for Bonneville.

George, you should post some of the photos of your bike. The front end you built is beautiful and I'm sure there are many on this site that would love to see it.

To be continued.

Back in 2000-2003, some pals and I ran our Sportsters at Bonneville. We even managed to bag several records. We also ran at the ECTA meets in North Carolina with some success, winning the motorcycle championship in 2002.

What class are you gunning for?

Ooops. I see you are undecided on that. Most of the sanctioning bodies classes are very similar.

You'll most likely be running in a modified chassis class: M. The bike doesn't appear to fit in the altered chassis class: A. And the production chassis class: P, has VERY strict rules.

No fairing means you won't be in the partial streamline classes: PS.

Next up is your fuel selection. Gas or other?

Finally you have your engine classification. That is based on displacement and whether or not you are using a push rod based valve train.

My guess is you'll be in the modified, gas class: M/G

Posted by: Ol'89r---------------------

Crim.

Congrats on your record. That's very cool.

I'm still trying to figure out what class we will fit in. Most likely it will fit into the modified production, pushrod class. The frame is stock with minor modifications. The engine is a 1957 3TA, 350cc pushrod twin with major modifications. Have jetting for both gas and fuel.

The class that we run is not important since the rules for the classes have changed drastically since Danny originally set the record. The bike no longer fits into the original class when the record was set but the speed record still stands. This is more of a personal endeavor to fulfill Dannys dream of breaking his old speed record. It's the top MPH that matters, not the class record.

Nice pictures Max, and Terry the bike looks awesome.

I'll bet Danny Macias would be incredibly proud of the way his friend/student has supported his legacy.

Thank you Rich. I am very proud just to be a part of this.

Thanks Max. The pics turned out great!

And, thanks to our own Big Lou @ 441 Designs. He did the graphics for the signboard.

Now the real work begins. The bike has to be taken apart and done right. I basically threw it together for the show. The engine will have to be dialed in on the dyno and an exhaust system has to be made. The pipes that are on the bike were only for the show.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

Posted by: nachtsheim---------------------

Terry,

Just got the photos, The bike looks great! If it runs as fast as it looks you should be in the record book.

Posted by: ODM2---------------------

Terry,

This is at least my fourth read through this. It is fun!!! I tried to p.m. your buddy George to shake his photos/story out onto a thread, but no luck. Besides, I doubt if my harassment would have the same effect without knowledge of my nagging superpowers. I hate to use those on total strangers. Lol. Right.

Nachtsheim- you gotta understand there are a lot of dreamers out here (like myself) who can only enjoy dreaming through the exploits of others because we have neither talent nor imagination. Please post up your project- it is what makes this a great place to hang out. The guys and gals who know machines will be drooling all over their computers with envy.

Thanks Max for keeping a photo record of Gramp's work for us.

Posted by: ODM2---------------------

89r- I was going to ask a question in the macias eulogy post, rather than double posting. However, I think it is archived for all time....(Extremely well written, and in my mind, where I got hooked on this Bonneville story.)

http://www.dirtrider.net/forums3/sh...80&page=3&pp=10

.... So if you do not mind, I'll ask my question here.

My question:

Has his daughter heard anything in regards to Danny's nomination for the bike hall of fame? I realize the nomination runs multiple years so it isn't a 2009 or never deal... I thought honorees were named around now, even though the induction isn't until fall? Is that correct? I'm a little foggy on the details now. Any updates on that?

It's neat to be doing something for a higher purpose, even if doing it would be just good clean fun in itself. Score on all counts.

Posted by: nachtsheim---------------------

ODM2 - I was going to post some photos along with a little history of the project but when I tried I could only get 3 photos loaded at a time and that would just make you pester me for more! Besides I've got a long way to go and a short time to get there, need to put all my time in the shop. I can build or machine most anything but finding my way around a computer is not my bag. If you can give me step by step instructions on how to put in a dozen or so pics along with the text I'd be glad to do so.

hmm. I've heard something like this before. The first thought that comes to mind is get a grandson named Max.

You are right that I would pester for more. I think maybe one of the mods could help you work a shortcut. By all means get the bike together in time!!! If we (meaning them, the mods) can't figure out a shortcut to getting stuff posted, then we'll have to have you do it after the bike is together. I'm very interested, so don't figure this is getting you off the hook. I've got very very long naggamemory for an otherwise amnesiac. Thanks for checking in. Looking forward to the stories and pics!

ODM2.

His daughter was in town for the Trailblazers mc annual banquet and bike show a couple of weeks ago but, I forgot to ask her how that was coming. I will email her and inquire as to what is happening.

I fully understand why George has not posted his pics yet. If I didn't have Max with the trick camera and the ability he has behind it, I would not have the time to do it myself.

ODM2 keep in mind we are just old gear-heads. Nuts 'n bolts kinda guys. The internet is a good place to keep in touch with old friends and share projects but, we leave the tech stuff to the kids who have the time to sit and learn all of that stuff. We don't have the time. The older you get the more you realize, time is your most important asset.

Like George said, there's a long way to go and a short time to get there. Maybe after Bonneville he will have the time to post the photos of his project. I have seen some of them and he is doing a fantastic job. He has handbuilt his entire frame and front end out of aluminum and his frame jig is very unique.

George (or Terry) - Anytime you want you can e-mail me your pictures and I'll build you a little webpage and post links to the pics.

I could do something like this:
http://www.chicagostories.net/Ton_Up_2007/

Once I did the initial work to set it up the it's really easy to take a new group of pictures and crank out the same type of page.

Sorry to keep everyone that is planning on going to Bonneville in the dark but, after reviewing all of our options, we have decided to run with the BUB Racing organization.

BUB is motorcycles only and is more 'kick-back'. More like 'the good old days'. The bike will fit into their classes better and require less modification.

Go to bubracing.com and all of the information is there. The dates are from August 30th to September 3rd. We have to be on the salt on August 29th for registration and tech inspection. Those attending will have to buy a gate pass for $20 per day or $80 per week. This gives you full access to the pits.

Anyone that wants to be a member of the pit crew, please let me know as we will have to list your name on the entry form.

We will be staying in the motorhome camping area on the salt but there are motel rooms still available in Wendover. Links to the motels are on BUB's site.

Anyone interested in watching the cars run, the SCTA runs the week before BUB. Go to the Southern California Timing Association web site for info on that.

See you guys on the salt.

Posted by: Ol'89r---------------------

A new sponsor to add to the list.

A good friend from my flat tracking days, Paul Benedetti, has offered to pay our entry fee. He will also be a part of our pit crew.

Thank you Paul. What a guy!

Posted by: Ol'89r---------------------

Another new sponsor.

Vince Zine from Titanium Metalurgy in Hollywood California has offered to build our exhaust system. Vince is a master metal worker and a long time friend.

Thank you Vince.

Posted by: Ol'89r---------------------

Let me introduce you to my longtime friend and business associate, Jim Hill. Jim will be our Crew Chief. He is an organizer Par excellence. The perfect guy to get all our ducks-in-a-row.

Jim and I have enjoyed many adventures together including B to V and the inaugural Cannonball One Lap of America. (I'll tell ya' about that one sometime.) He has also offered to sponsor our fuel for the event.

Thank you Sir.

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------

Stories, pics, live helmet cam feeds, hear say from some impartial bunch of drinkers or even smoke signals, for us that regrettably can not make it? Bring it on! Potentially, Worlds Fastest Old 89er? And some pics of the pipe when its done, Vince, Vance, how can you go wrong with that? What type of fuel does Jim bring to the table? XXX secret? Any updates on how the salt is doing this year? If I could get there, I would pre-sweep the track for you!

Thanks Wolf. This thing is really starting to come together.

We are now officially signed-up with BUB Racing. Our racing number will be 1891.

No..... That's not the year I was born. HA! Beat you guys to it. I picked that number because it is my AMA number 89 with a one in front and a one behind. Number 89 was already taken.

Foxforks. I hope someone will bring a laptop so we can keep you guys informed. I know Rich will bring his camera and Jim is in charge of documentation. Knowing him, we may have a helicopter and a film crew. Jim will be supplying us with Alcohol and Nitro methane for the run. This time of year, the salt is probably still pretty wet.

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------

For a guy nicknamed Old 89er? #1891 was a good year! Lets just hope that is not your position in the field to start!

Posted by: Ol'89r---------------------

Sorry it's been so long since updating this thread. We have been working feverishly to complete the bike and get it ready to test. Many things have changed since the photos were taken after the bike show. The bike has been taken apart and put back together many times. The pipes, rear wheel and brake assembly have changed since the photos were taken along with other minor changes. Thanks to Robby Burg from Classic Restorations for supplying us with the rear wheel.

Yesterday we took it to El Mirage dry lake for testing. The test went very well. On the third run we went 117.1 MPH. This is only 3.7 MPH under Dannys original record. This was on C-12, a 108 octane basic race gas. When we switch to C-14 along with the fuel additives, I feel confident we can break Dannys record at Bonneville.

The wind came up in the afternoon and we found ourselves in a huge dust storm. Had to cut the test short.

My friend Dan Jones took photos and some video of the test and I will post them as soon as he sends them.

Thanks to those that came out to help.

On to Bonneville.

Posted by: Rich Rohrich---------------------

That's awesome news Terry. It's good to hear the initial testing was so positive.

Thanks for posting that Rich.

In the video, you can see where I had trouble getting the bike into high gear. That is when the car caught up. There was a bronze bushing in the gearbox that was starting to seize and it did completely seize on the last run destroying the lay shaft and the K/S spindle.

Thanks to the generosity of Bill Getty from JRC Engineering, we now have a later model needle bearing set-up in the gearbox. The original, bronze bushing style was never meant to withstand the HP and speed that this thing has.

Posted by: danny's girl---------------------

I just watched Terry's run; wow! I can't believe this is really going to happen. It was a long time coming, but because of Terry's dedication and the giving nature of all those who joined him it is finally here, and I thank you all so much . After being down with the flu for a week this video really raised my spirits ! I won't be able to get away from work to join in the fun on the flats, but my husband Mike will be there to represent me and share in the excitement. For those who knew my dad you surely know he is grinning from ear to ear... An update on the AMA Hall of Fame nomination: my dad was not among the inductees for this year . But I am not giving up and I will resubmit his name again this October and every October until he gets the recognition he deserves... To those who knew my dad and loved him and to those who just love motorcycles as much as he did, there are not enough ways to say thank you to all of you who have gotten involved in the Bonneville run. Good Luck to Terry and Team Macias as they fly on the flats, Pam Macias Caspers

Thank you Pam. It was your dad and the values that he instilled in all of us that is making this happen. Thank you very much for letting me be a part of of such an exciting project. I'm just a passenger. A mere test dummy. Your dad built the engine and like most of the engines he built, it rips.

Hey Tony.. All is great. You?

Posted by: Ol'89r---------------------

WooHoo! What a blast.

We didn't break Danny's record. In fact, we didn't even come close. Bonneville is like no other place I have ever raced. The conditions are a huge factor. The atmospheric pressure and humidity on Monday was the same as being at 7800 feet altitude. That will sap horsepower like you can't believe. The salt was wet and you could feel the drag on the bike. Plus the fact that without a front fender, you couldn't see where you were going due to the salt spray on the visor. Had to wipe my visor about every 3/4 of a mile down the course. Fortunately there is a big ol mountain at the end of the course that you can aim at and there really isn't anything to hit.

We lost 14 mph somewhere between the El Mirage test and
Bonneville. Of course, all of the teams were complaining of the same problem. We ran 117mph at El Mirage and could not get over 103 on the salt. The conditions got better as the week went on and the salt got drier and became packed down.

I was truly humbled by my team members. A group of guys that I have known for over 40 years came together from all over the country and worked like a well oiled machine. Some from as far away as Florida. I can't thank you guys enough and I couldn't have done it without each and every one of you. I am a lucky, lucky man to have the friends that I have.

I got to meet DRN member George from Littleton Colorado and it was like we had known each other all of our lives. After talking, turned out we have known each other for many years. Thank you George it was my pleasure.

Thanks to all of my sponsors and supporters, Van Leeuwen Enterprises, JRC Engineering, Titanium Metallurgy, IMS ShirtWerx, Pechanga Casino and Resort, Classic Restoration, Superior Office Service, 2Twenty9 Photography, James J. Hill, Rich Rohrich, Dan Jones, Paul Benedetti, Dennis Kanage, and Michael and Pam Caspers. Sorry if I forgot anyone. Special thanks to my wonderful wife Peggy for putting up with all this nonsense after all these years. Love ya babe.

Truly a humbling experience from day one. Don't know what the future holds for right now. Busy getting the salt out of every nook and cranny. We proved one thing though, Danny Macias is still THE MAN.

Thank you all.

Terry Morairty

The Team. From left to right. John Bommarito, Dan Jones, Vince Zine, myself, George Nachtsheim, Kansas Annis, Paul Benedetti. Missing from the photo, Mike Caspers.

Certainly gives perspective of the attempt and how difficult these goals are!!!

None the less may I be the first to say-

Hats off to you, your team & your true right hand man Mrs. Ol'89r! Well done.

WTG, 89r!

Your tribute to Danny Macias has been very inspirational to read. What a man he must have been.

Thanks very much to you and your team - It has been a real pleasure reading about this adventure.

Thanks for sharing the adventure with us! Sounds like you guys had a blast.

I am very sorry to have missed it. It is a testament that Danny must have been a great enough friend to inspire the effort you put forth. It also speaks quite clearly about the kind of a friend that you are.

Terry, you are one of the best and I am quite proud to claim you as a friend, as I'm sure Danny was, too.

As you can tell by the smiles on all of our faces, Bonneville was a great time!
After all the years that had gone by I got to meet Terry again, what a guy! The last time I remember seeing him he was sweeping the floors at Bellflower Triumph service dept. back in the '60s. The rest of the team I met for the first time, a really great bunch of guys. I'm sure that Danny would have been proud of the effort that Terry and the rest put forward in this endeavore.
As they say, you can't win 'em all --- and --- there's always next year!

I want to wish you all a very sincere congratulations on an awesome team effort. I am very sorry I missed this. I feel like I let a whole team down! On the "plus" side, I was sicker than a dog all week, so I would have been miserable had I gone. On the other plus side, I managed a high B on my Econ test, which surprised even me (it's a much tougher course than I ever imagined it would be).

Like John Lennon said, "life is what happens while you're busy making other plans"... although my dad's record wasn't officially broken, (unexpected piston boring ), the record for friendship and effort were surpassed beyond all expectations! To those who gave so much of themselves to this project: I know my dad would be proud of those friends he already knew and thankful to all the new people he would have called friends. Terry is still just shaking off the salt and he's already talking about making a return run to Bonneville next year! Who knows? Just want to say " thank you Terry" and thanks to everybody who participated. I can see by the smiles in your group picture that you had a great time. I'm sure my dad is smiling, too...always enjoy the ride, Pam Macias Caspers

Great pics, Terry!

That Vincent streamliner has some pretty tight packaging! Do you know what they ran?

Posted by: gwcrim---------------------

Congratulations on a fine trip to the salt. Just making it there to compete is a victory in itself. The memories will last several lifetimes.

Posted by: Ol'89r---------------------

Dave.

Not sure if the Vincent completed a run. They broke the drive gears and cases between the engines.

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------
