So where are we going to ride now?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Trigger1911---------------------

Hello all, it is I, Trigger, coming to you from this frozen hell called Pennsylvania. Since Paragon is now para-Gone, where will we be riding? I am mostly healed up from my shoulder surgery and ready to try and ride again. I miss my buddies!

Posted by: RM_guy---------------------

I've been thinking about that Mike. In April there is a 2 day ride up near me in Hancock, NY. It's put on by the same group that hosts the one of the National enduros. It's called the Good Kuggamugga ride and it is on April 18-19th. Here's the web site http://www.bearcreeksportsmen.com/

I have been trying to contact them about camping. When I went a couple of years ago it was very primitive but there are a bunch of hotels in town. I wasn't going to get everyone going on it until I got more information but now is a s good as any.

I went with eldrm (remember him from Modena years ago?) and his friend and we had a blast.

There is also Lost Trails in the Poconos that is pretty nice to ride at.

Posted by: Rooster---------------------

Trigger! Glad to hear you are healing up.

It's finally getting to be that time, the sun was awesome today.

Posted by: sick 96 250---------------------

You guys and always make a trip out west!! Always had a good time riding with you guys, would love to get back east for a little vaca and a nice ride on real dirt/soil!!!

Posted by: Rooster---------------------

Trust me sick - every time I visit NM, all I can do is wish I had my bikes with me. I do agree, however, the desert may be fun, but there's no substitute for good black dirt (which is non-existant on the coast here, unless you roost up the neighbors prize vegetable garden).

Hmmm...don't you have relatives in the vegetable garden business???

Posted by: Rooster---------------------

As a matter of fact, I do. And my bikes are located right across the street.

Posted by: scooter1130---------------------

Did I hear somebody say spring ride in the veggie patch?

Posted by: JasonJ---------------------

Just let me know. We have been riding Hazelton, Pottsville (awesome!) and the Pines in the winter. We are looking to ride South NJ this weekend. Looks like Sunday. We can bike pool if you want and Ill split the gas with you. My Van has a sticker sitseation plus it be stuck in the Pa Perma-frost out behind the barn since December . Seemed like a good place to park it at the time We can meet at the Quakertown TP exit. Your in Allentown right? Is your bike "legal?" You had a DRZ last time me thinks.

Posted by: flyingfuzzball---------------------

in pottsville you mean by the horseshoe pitt place right?

Posted by: JasonJ---------------------

Oh I ment St Clair off 61. Reading Cole Co. Their office is in Pottsville, thats where you get the permits. $100 / year. Cant beat that!

Posted by: flyingfuzzball---------------------

ill have to look into that.

Posted by: JasonJ---------------------

I can get the number for you. I have to go up and get my 09 permit. You have to go up durring the week to their office to get it.

Thanks bro, great info. You ride there Scooter? Very cool place to ride. Takes quite a while to figure out the area as its so vast, but thats half the fun! We have found LOTS of very cool single track out there and I even not only got lost with CRF guy (my guide), but he even at one point stopped and considered turning around on a rocky downhill that seemed to have no end saying "if we had to go back up the way we came it would be better to turn around now than keep going down." I said the tail had to lead somewhere and go back up. Id did. But it was NOT easy!
That was one of the best trials I have been on in a LONG time, maybe ever. And the fact that we both had never been on it and were not even sure where we were or IF we could get back the way we came made it even better!
The trail started at the foot of an old fire watch tower that we both thought would be cool to climb. About 80' up or so the semi rotted wood steps started feeling much less secure. Climbing up there in MX boots was sketchey enough, I was worried about stepping DOWN in MX boots. They just dont bend that way.
We didnt make it all the way up.... Im gonna take a set of sneekers next time and get to the top of that bad boy!
Anyway, its a great legal ride area and maybe we should think about a spring ride there. The main issue will be getting the permits for everyone but hey, $100 for a weekend of riding is NOT bad plus the permit is good all year, and its about the same distance for all, maybe closer for the folks up North. Its about 25 mins North of I 78 on Rt 61. Its about 1.75 drive hours NW for me. anyone from down south is welcome to camp / stay at my place, I have room now.

Posted by: JasonJ---------------------

BTW, 10:30 Rally time at Coranza Monument in South Jersey Sunday 2/8/09. My cell is 2158927721and your bike needs to be street legal.

Posted by: Trigger1911---------------------

Hey J, thaty sounds like a great place to ride! If you want to go up during the week let me know. We can meet and head up.

Posted by: JasonJ---------------------

Ok, will do. It will be a while until all the snow and ice melts up there. March might be doable if we get a warm spell.

Posted by: JasonJ---------------------

Great day of riding in the Pine Barrens today. Temps in the 60's with warm sunshine. MOST ice was gone by noon. The fire roads were slippery so we tired to stay off them. The Single track was in decent shape with a few trees down but thats whats fun about single track, when it gets blocked a new trail evolves around the obsticle makeing it more interesting. This was my first real ride of 09 and Im whooped from the sand whoops. Can't wait to get up North into coal country when the weather breaks.

Posted by: njdrtrdr---------------------

I'm getting my permit for there for 09. I'll be looking for some folks to ride with. Especially someone that's been there before.
Shoot me a PM. I rode with some of you guys on a trail clearing day at Paragon a couple years ago. I'm still pissed at that place. Even more pissed now that the airport was canned too and the place is sitting there doing nothing.

I haven't tried the 8 bees route yet.

Nick

Posted by: JasonJ---------------------

Ok, lets all check in when we get our permits and Ill do the same when we are heading up there.

Posted by: RockRockRock---------------------

Do you have to have a dual sport to get the permit?

Nope, its a quad, trike, bike ATV ok place. I don't think they allow 4x4 trucks or anything. Your just rippin on the bazillion acres the cole co leases. Most of it they dont even mine or use. Nowhere as crowded as Paragon was. We rode for over 1 hour without seeing other riders. Lots of elevation and woods seems to keep the quads near the silt pits. Keep off clean coal, dont mess with cole equipment, respect all and be safe and responsible for yourself. They even have more than one location I understand for the same price / permit kinda like the Hatfield McCoy system. It's a real gem of North Eastern Pa riding.
I think it's the shotgun enduro that runs up there.
So what do we think about a spring ride.......?

Posted by: RM_guy---------------------

Where exactly is this place? Is it in Pottsville, PA?

Posted by: JasonJ---------------------

The office to get your permit is in Pottsvile proper just down the street from D.G. Yuengling Brewery HQ. The riding area we have been riding is in St. Clair Pa Just a few clicks North of Pottsvile. Just google maps St Clair pa. Its just south of 81 on Rt 61. North of 209, North of 78. The parking area is about 2 miles off rt 61 just out of town.

Just checked it out, its about 10 miles S S,W Of Paragon.

Posted by: RM_guy---------------------

Thanks Jason. Is there camping around...ya know, the kind with flushing crappers and showers?

Posted by: JasonJ---------------------

I just googled coampgrounds st clair pa and found 2 with in 5 miles.
http://www.christmaspines.com/ near blue mt looks well equiped and Locust lake (no site found). Our old friends at Red Ridge are only about 10 miles away. About the same distance they are from Paragon. Could even split up the riding if we rode more than one day.

Posted by: scooter1130---------------------

I think a spring ride at RAC might limit some people. Everybody would have to be there at least by friday afternoon to get the permits to ride the weekend.

I am all for a spring ride, but think it would be better to have it at either 8B's or lost trails so people who can only make the weekend can still come. My vote would be for lost trails, but thats only because its a shorter drive for me

Hopefully before too long we will have word on a possible Paragon reopening, I don't think its too far off. Can't get into too much detail since there are still court cases pending, but I'll let you guys know as soon something is definite.

I'd also like to check out Thomaston Dam sometime this summer if anybody is up for a day trip or weekend in Connecticut.

Posted by: RockRockRock---------------------

Great info, thank you. I too am interested in thomaston damn for a weekend. I'm sorting out the details for the reading permit, should have that by the end of the month. I loathe to have to take a day off to get the permit... but if that's what I have to do....

No you dont need to be legal. ATVs need to be registered, bikes do not.

thanx scooter!!! ^^

Posted by: CRFGuy---------------------

Hi guys
Jason the rides you've been taking with us so far at least with you along have been on land that two local clubs also run both the Broad Mtn Enduro and the Shot Gun Enduro. You have been on rides that cover an area about 5 square miles (wait just remembered the ride where you and I went down behind the fire tower) Now that was a very interesting downhill over some serious drop offs that seemed to go on forever so lets say maybe 7-8 miles that is only a very small part of their land I'd say they easily have over 300,000 acres thats avaiable for the small price of 100.00 per year. The trails are endless and I'd say I have tracks that are at least 100 miles of some of the most incredible single track anywhere I have riden to date. Just to give you guys an idea the whole area of Paragon would be like a parking lot at RAC. I personally look forward to much more exploration of the land they have there and welcome all the company that wants to tag along. The one important thing to remember there is that you are of course totally on your own or at least with your group they offer no support or medical help but you are close to some sort of local roads most of the time. The area lends itself to some awsome hill climbs tight single track open fire cuts you name it it's there. If you haven't got it yet I think it's the best resourse we have in the area and it's just up the road from CABELA's on 78 by about 1/2 hour. Look forward to seeing some of you out there and I'd say by Mid March the ice should be gone. Jason you missed a great ride yesterday get the bike ready for next week.

i am new to pa and knew that atvs had to register and seen that bike do not have to so you are saying that i do not have to register my rm 125 to ride on public riding areas ??? is this correct

Posted by: scooter1130---------------------

No, all I am saying is that to ride at Reading Anthracite, you do not need to be registered. Most public lands in Pa which are open to ATVs, are not open to bikes.

As for private areas in Pa for riding,(rausche creek, tower city, lost trails, rock run, etc) each area will vary, but other than for sanctioned Enduros, most do not require bikes to be registered.

I will probably make 1-2 trips to RAC this summer, but the majority of my riding will be at lost Trails since for me it is much closer. If anybody wants to join me, let me know, I am there almost every weekend.

Also its great to see that RAC is not limiting their permits to 100/200 this year like they have in the past. They are selling an unlimited amount of permits this year for the first time.

Posted by: rm125dd---------------------

have you ever heard of the majestic trails i am thinking about going up there to ride and it is public and it is about 2.5 hours from me just wondering if you or anyone has ever heard of this place or have been there to se if it is worth the trip

Posted by: scooter1130---------------------

I have heard of majestic trails, but never been there since its about a 7 hour drive for me. And although it is open to the public, it is still privately owned.

By public I was refering to state land, and private I meant privately owned property which is open to the public.

You may also want to check out Rock Run, again, I have never been there, but if the zip code in your profile is correct, this would be closer for you than Majestic.

Posted by: flyingfuzzball---------------------

hey scooter to ride at lost trails bikes have to be insured right?

Posted by: scooter1130---------------------

I know they were trying to do away with the need for insurance, but it was the property owners who required it, not the park owners. As of right now, I don't see that listed in their rules and regulations, so its possible its no longer required, but its never bad to have anyway.

Even if it is still required, they have always allowed first time visitors to ride without it so they could check out the park, and if you were to return a second time, they did require it.

Posted by: flyingfuzzball---------------------

In that case i definately talk to my dad and try to get out there.

Posted by: scooter1130---------------------

Let me know when, and if I'm free I can show you guys around.

Posted by: flyingfuzzball---------------------

yea it probably wont be for a couple of weeks because my dad is getting ready to run a marathon in march so he doesnt want to hurt himself before it.

Posted by: rm125dd---------------------

do you have a site or anything on that rock run would like to look in to it and see what it is all about you never know might try to get a few of us out there to ride but cannt make fun of the new rider (me lol ) lol lol

Yeah I think thats why most have never herd of it. The permits sold out so quick it was more like an exclusive club. I think they did 800 last year and then when they sold out they just kept on selling more.
CRF guy Im surprised you went out, it was kinda cold here but did warm up from 1 to 4. I got alot of wood cut and split so I still got a work out.

Any word on PAP?

Posted by: rm125dd---------------------

thanks for the site scooter looking forward to going there and checking it out but not to sure when yet but hopefully soon

Got a nice day in at Bonners today with CRF guy and co. The trails are in fairly decent shape. We found a nasty single track section with lots of low and downed branches that got the bikes and riders nice and warm! I was surprised with all the wind we had it was not worse with blown over trees. A few here and there. We saw no one all day. We herd some riders while we were sitting on Cherokee hill but other than that, it was like having the whole world to ourselves. We had 5 good riders all about the same pace so it was a great day. Steve's KTM 450 is still having oil issues despite a brand new motor but he road like a hero today. He made this little climb line we all had a problem with due to crazy quick sand like soft coal shale very loose at the top, just when you thought you were about to crest and let off the gas your bike sank!. He took this crazy off camber line on the big Nurock, rock face wall just by the coal road gate. The rest of us were sitting on Coal road with our jaws on our gas tanks going what the FFFFFFFFFFFF is he doing! All this on a cut suspension bike!
Sorry to the guys on here I normally email before going up there but it was an early morning change from South NJ due to Radar and forecast.

Posted by: 2strokeff54---------------------

any of yall ride the barrens anymore? last i heard it was shut down but havent heard anything further. i ride at the D.O.D in jersey i am not sure if we are aloud there but the NJ state cop we talked to didnt bother us for it. I am lookin for some more places to ride, might be going to woodbine in southern jersey at some point but the barrens sound cool for riding and gettinn to open the bike up a bit.

Posted by: RockRockRock---------------------

I'm taking off wednesday to get my anthracite permit. Who's up for a ride around noon?

Posted by: JasonJ---------------------

We ride the pines when its cold. Chadsworth area.
Rock, I just got mine on Friday, #720. We had to bag riding lat weekend though

Posted by: RockRockRock---------------------

Yeahhhh. I'm 6 something 1. I might be up there on saturday if no overtime.

Posted by: 53fireman---------------------

CRFguy, where do you guys park when you ride the single track stuff and hill climbs? Burma Road? heard of some issues with guys parking there and getting vandalized and such... I'm interested in getting the RAC permit, but they don't have maps or anything, and the schuylkill county parcel locator website they send you to is about impossible to navigate... I've heard St Clair and Trevorton are 2 of the larger RAC areas to ride, but don't know where to park or anything like that

Posted by: RockRockRock---------------------

2strokeff54,

When was the last time you rode DOD? And what did the cop say? I used to go there alot, took a hiatus, and now that I ride again, they put up a nice big sign there that scares me.

I got a ticket @ Penns Grove for 'driving on a closed road' (cop waited for us to load up and leave) and the officer suggested DOD but like I said... that sign is a deterrent to me. I don't know the penalty for trespassing and I don't really want to find out.

Posted by: CRFGuy---------------------

Hey fireman
We park on Berma rd and have been doing it now for the secod season. We have had no problems with parking there and have met many good people there. They are really cracking down on non permit riders so if your going to go there spend the 100.00 it's well worth it. I've spent at least 40 riding days there last year and have never stopped finding new trails and riding areas. the place is huge! I've ridien in the Broad MTN and shoot gun enduro both of which are run on the property. I can't believe what a resourse this place is for our community. Jason, Steve, Brad, John and I found something like 30 miles of new sigle track we've never been on Sunday. There's something there for everyone no matter what your skill level is. The big down side would have to be they are only selling you a permit giving you the right to ride the land but you are trully on your own. If you get hurt out there it will be up to you and your buddies to get you out unlike some pay for play parks.

We tend to ride what I would consider to be Intermediate to an advanced pace with good solid skills on rock, coal silt and hills needed but we would welcome anyone with a valid permit to join us out there.

Gordon

Posted by: 53fireman---------------------

thanks for the info. I might be heading up to Pottsville on Thurs to grab a permit. A couple of us are heading to 8 Bees again on Friday

Posted by: JasonJ---------------------

How did you make out Fireman?
RAC Sunday Sunday, Sunday. 10 AM Burma Rd. Kids Tickets still just 5 Bucks!
But they have to be 8 pointers or better....

Posted by: 53fireman---------------------

Well the weather forecasters aren't so good at what they do, so when they were calling for snow in the AM and rain all day in Hazleton, I decided to bag that trip on Friday, which meant I didn't head to Pottsville on Thursday. So naturally, it turned out to be a beautiful day and my uncle and his buddy had an awesome day out at 8Bees. I made it up to Nesquehoning this afternoon and we got a solid 4 hours in, so my weekend wasn't totally shot. I'm off next week, so I'm gonna get up to Pottsville for a permit. Sunday would have been out anyway, heading to MD for Easter lunch. I'll be in touch, because I definitely wanna get up and check out the RAC areas.

Posted by: JasonJ---------------------

Sorry you listened to the weather man! I just take a look at the radar and get about 90% accurate within 12 hours. Thats about 200% better than the TV. There is a dual sport in NY next weekend or we may hit RAC depending on the weather.

Posted by: rmrider45---------------------

hi guys where i live in kulpmont near shamokin. there are lots of places close to ride 2 blocks away from me are many trails and about six blocks away there is a place my son calls the desert with lots of coal hills to climb and many trails..if you like climbing hills come to the desert sometime.. if there are some older riders here that remember the natalie pit its close to there. the pit was filled in many years ago tho.

Posted by: CRFGuy---------------------

Had another great ride at RAC Yesterday. Brad, John and I found about 25 or so new single track miles of some very good stuff. All in all it was a very good day with only one break down of a Honda clutch cable. Interesting ride back. We did about 35 miles total and rode for about 3.5 hours with very little stopping except for John's clutch.
Guy's get your permits

Jason, where's the ride in NY? Is it the trail ride in Hancock?

Man, I feel WAY out of the loop. I was on the bike a few weeks ago after no riding for over a year. I cut some trails behind my house but was very much out of shape. I was going to do the trail ride in Hancock this coming weekend but between being sick all last week & being out of shape and I'd have trouble just getting the bike unloaded!

This RAC place sounds like a blast but I have to get back in shape first.

Hello DYDR crew, it's been a while.

Anyone going to the kuggamugga ride this weekend?
I may show up with a few guys on Sunday.
I was planning on bringing them to the AGP race but
it was cancelled.

Hey bud, it has been a while! I was going to go to the Kuggamugga ride but can't now. That ride is a blast. If you haven't been there before, watch closely for the arrows that point to the place. I missed one and it took a while to find it. If you go under the interstate before turning off the main road then you have gone too far. You have to make the last left turn before going under Rt 17. The arrow is usually on the right hand side of the road. Then there is one more arrow down that road to turn left again on a dirt road.

Have fun!

Posted by: CRFGuy---------------------

I was planning on going up there with the gang this weekend but after remembering there is only 30 miles of trails on this ride I'm going to pass on that long of a drive since RAC is closer and there are 100's of miles of single track to be had.
The Suzuki Dualsport ride in Hancock NY in August is a blast with over 100 miles of trail and I ride that for sure. It's not like I'm thumbing my nose up at this weekends ride of only 30 miles its just that for me its not worth the drive. Enjoy if you go!

Posted by: CRFGuy---------------------

Oh yeah if anyone wants to join us we'll be riding Saturday meeting on Berma Rd at around 10:30

Posted by: JasonJ---------------------

Looks like great weather for Sat! Neal is talking about 8B's on Monday. I'm keeping an eye on the weather but as of now it looks like cold and rain for Monday.

Posted by: JasonJ---------------------

Epic freaking ride today. Fantabulous weather. We had 4 guys but a 5th stranger showed up. Turns out he is from right up the road from where I live and does not like to ride alone. He promised to take us out on some new single track. Darell asked if it was single track as in no quads. Kevin assured us, NO Quads could run them. He was right, and one hell of a rider too! This guy started smoking us and throwing us on some really really tough but awesome single track. Just lots of tight turns and lots of quick elevation. Some really hard single track climbs and decents. But a great day on new single track and some old. I'm really tired! First full hard out day, as far as an AM ride, refule, and a nice PM ride.

Posted by: CRFGuy---------------------

Jason I'd have to agree. great day and that Kevin Windom guy can sure ride. Seems like we all had a little tough time at one point or another. mine was on the hill climb that we could either go left or right and I choose right only to start a head high wheelie about 15 feet from the top with the choice of getting off or having the bike chase me down the hill. Some how I managed to make the dismount look like a planned move and avoided getting hurt. Steve had several interesting mishaps but the most entertaining and I say that only cause he didn't get hurt, was the slide down the big steep silt hill with the bike chasing him right from the top. Your's of course would have been when kevin threw that log at you at that creek crossing just before the uphill. Darrel's was unfortunately a little more costly on the body wear and tear. Seems on the last trail of the day Darell who I would have to say is the strongest rider in our group was chasing Kevin down just trying to get a glimpse of that orange blur. He must have zigged when he should have zagged and wound up doing the superman through about 6 trees. bike was ok but as he said "someone rung his bell" Still haven't heard back as to how his ribs are today but hope he's ok! . Other then that we really did have an awesome day, about 33 miles with our new riding friend and his tour. By the way he's one of those crazy Hair scramble guys.
So has anyone bought their permit yet and want to join us?

Posted by: JasonJ---------------------

Oh man, that log was crazy. I have to say that was the most crazy obsticle I have ever faced. It was a tricky uphill water flowing wash out. You could opt to ride the wash out line or there was a decent few lines around it but with heavy spring non cut leaf fall all around.
" I tossed my front end hard later in that thick leaf pile while running hard! You know when you have to ask your bud to stuff your stuff back in your back pack it was a decent roll."

I was ripping as hard as I could to stay on Kevin Windam's wheel and lines and try to make them work for me and he was about 3/4 up the hill when I was leading into it, I started my charge just as he wheelied and bunny hopped a 12" dead fall log about 30' long that was straight across the trail. That log started rolling straight down the hill at me covering all my lines! I thought I would just try to pop over it as it rolled down but as it got closer I lost my nerve and saw it just steam roll over me so I picked the cloesest LARG tree and shot off to the lower side of it as the rolling log came to rest perfectly across the hill. My bike landed in a cradle of criss crossed logs on the side of the hill but I landed safe. It was quit a wrestle to pull the bike out of that mess. The guys behind me were just as whooped as I was trying to keep up with Kevin so it was up to me to pull the bike loose. I even went above and beyond and pulled the turn pike log off the trail. We took a special rest break at the top of that hill. I needed the air and Kevin needed a smoke.....
No kidding, that guy smoked 2 cigs as I was cathing my breath! SOB..And I like to think Im in decent shape and I DON'T smoke!
Thanks for the awesome ride Kevin. I dumped my bike 1 time, did not make 1 hill, and bagged off (got stuck) once. all in the same ride.
That means I road hard, and got better for my mistakes by following better guys without getting hurt. Thats a GOOD ride
Steve had a great ride. That down hill was quite hard. We were at the top of that hill and could not See the bottom much less the next 10'. It took all the compression brake my motor had, all the front brake I dared to pull and all the back brake you could give with out letting the back of the bike rotate around. When you start getting crossed up on a big down hill like that it takes tons of guts to either let off the brakes, and or give it gas to get it straight!
To his credit, when Steve was asked why he tossed the bike at the top of the hill he said "just lucky I guess!"

Who would be up for a Damn Yankees spring ride at The Lost Trails in June. I know people have been getting thier RAC permits, but for people who would be traveling to ride, it would be harder for them to get a permit. For those who have looked into Lost Trails before, and were held back by the insurance requirements, They no longer require insurance on your bike. But it is always highly recomended.

If theres interest in a spring ride, I'll start a new thread so we can pick a date.

Sounds good!

I'm up for that Dan. I have been out a few times and am getting back in shape so I shouldn't embarrass myself too much!

What's with you guys? Doesn't anyone other then about 5-6 of us ride anymore? Absolutely beautiful day on Sat! We rode about 31 miles of some really sweet single track that is part of the Broad Mtn Enduro. Guys get your permits, from what I understand they are not limiting the number sold this year and at 100.00 for the year if you do 2 weekends out there you're ahead of the curve anywhere else. If you go out on a Friday morning hit the office before 4pm you get your permit and ride all weekend. This place beats anything that Paragon or Tower city combined has to offer and the price is a steal. Another great option is of course 8b's campground. It gives us the ability to ride their property as well as all of the old Paragon stuff which is still marked out just like the day they closed, for only 25.00 per day. Lost trails I believe is 35.00 a day and has very limited single track, by their own website they are primarily an ATV park. Did anyone also see that they are only open 9-5 it doesn't get dark till well after 7 these days, and I don't know about you but I prefer to get out early to beat the heat of the day say on the trail around 8-8:30 Id say take a better look at their website, they don't even show a picture of a dirtbike on their photo page are they even friendly toward Bikes. Here's the link http://www.ridelosttrails.com/
Don't get me wrong if this is the best we can do to all get together I'll go but think we would have a better time somewhere else.

By the way at 25.00 a day that includes camping for the night

Posted by: 53fireman---------------------

When I'm not working, I'm trying to get out to ride, but my riding buddies are limited... still gotta get that damn permit, but I've been gone for a week and a half...

Posted by: RM_guy---------------------

Gordon, Believe me I want to get out more. I rode for a couple of hours out behind my house this past Saturday. There's over 1000 acres that I have opening up some old trails with a buddy of mine. I have been so busy with the new house that I only rode once last year. My goal is to get out more this year but I just can't justify driving 3 hours to RAC right now when I have some pretty good stuff right out of my garage. Lost Trails is small but they do have some fun trails (I think Dan even has some single track) that more people can make the trip to. It's sure a lot closer for me.

Posted by: scooter1130---------------------

Gordon, if you dont want to hit up lost trails, thats fine. But what gives you the right to bash a place you have never even tried. Not all of us have the ability to drive out and get the permit during the week, then drive another 2.5 hours each way every weekend to ride there. I have had permits for RAC the past 2 years, but to me its not worth the travel time when there is something closer, even if it is smaller.

I didnt ask about a spring ride at RAC because if people are traveling, they may not be able to get a permit. I didnt ask about 8Bs because there have been issues with riding there, and the owners of 8Bs have received warnings about telling people they can ride Paragons property, and I know of 2 friends who have had bikes confiscated for riding Paragons old property.

I am just looking to get together with a group of friends to hafve a fun weekend. If anybody has another resonable idea of where to go, we can try that.

Posted by: CRFGuy---------------------

Hey Dan
I'm not bashing ( a resource is a resource) and it's only about another hour to 8b's and it's alot cheaper for more riding area even without the old Paragon Property Which as far as I know there is no problem riding it as long as you a have a card from 8b's. Did your so called freinds who lost their bikes, (I'd sure love to hear more about this story) have a day rider card from 8b's or more likely were they just riding the property without anyones permission. Dan you ride lost trails because you work there but be fair about options. I wasn't "bashing", their website makes them look like they are exclusive to ATV's and we all know we don't mix well in the arena. Sorry if you took it the wrong way but please don't take it personally.

Gordon

Yes, my friends were with 8Bs. 8Bs does not have the authority to tell people they can ride Paragons old land so a pass from 8Bs means little on Paragons property. I have ridden the property a few times through 8Bs last year, but for me its not worth the risk. If others feel theres no risk, thats fine.

As for Lost Trails, I dont work there. I took the initiative to ask them if I could use a section to cut some single track to make the park more bike friendly. The were originally going to be an ATV only park, but that was changed, and there are just as many bikes there on a weekend as their are ATVs . Yes, all the pictures on their website are of ATVs, but if you looked at Paragons website 2-3 years after they opened, there wasnt a single picture of bikes or ATVs there, only trucks.

I agree there should be more pictures of bikes, and eventually there will be. But they have not change or added any pictures to their website since it was put up. The reason is, as with any park that allows dirtbikes and ATVs, there are people who dont want it there. They saw how people were using the pictures on Paragons website against Paragon, so they removed some of their pictures, and wont be adding more until the park has a firm foothold in the area and will be able to defend themselves better against the people who will use whatever they can to get them closed down.

Again, I am only looking to get together with friends for a weekend of riding. I'm open to suggestions of where to go. My choice was lost trails because I know the trails, and i think I can set up a good 2 day ride. RAC would be a great place for a spring ride because of the size, but would be dificult for some to get permits, 8Bs, I am not sure about , but if thats where people want to go, I'll be there. The only other place I can think of would be Hatfield McCoy, but I think we would need a week instead of a weekend if anybody is up for that.

Have you two kissed and made up?

Posted by: JasonJ---------------------

I have not tired Lost trails but its farther (for me) and smaller than other options. Scooter do you think we could make an honest 2 day ride out of it? If so I would make the trip just to see, ride, and hang with everyone. I vote RAC but I understand the permit issues. But, lets not forget that Pottsville is the home of D.G. Yuengling & sons brewery (4 doors up from the RAC office) and they offer tours and tasting. What better excuse to knock off Friday do you need?

8 B's is $25 / day, not night, so if you camp its $50. But that's 2 days of riding and one night camping so still cheap. There are showers but you have to run (or ride) up to the mini mart to do heavy biz. There is a hotel open now right at the entrance as in ride right out of the lot onto the trails. That's nice if your into that sort of thing. You can even hang and have a few Barley bevs and putt back to the hotel for you soft bottom boys, and girls.....

Had a nice 26 mile poke up at Bonners today. Carmella even let me roll for free since it's my Birthday! How sweet . Neal and his buddy Dean and I. Neal mentioned Dean had not ridden in a while but just picked up an XR 650. I figured a while was A WHILE when he dawned some Bob Hurricane Hannah White, Pink, Purpple and floresent Blue Cotton Awnser jersey and AXO pants. Turns out it had been a while. He got a bit bummed early when we hit a washed out rock step up and he had to wrestle and try to start the big bore no e start bike. He got his boots back after that and we cruised some nice woods trails. He picked up the pace but got pretty tired after a slog in the mud after lunch so we took a jump in the lake at the rope swing and that hit the spot. We dried off and worked our way back in. Neal even had a nice cold one for me when we were done! Nice day. I think I'll go rock some more cold ones!
Oh we were playing in the Horse shoe pit and I ripped off 5 Nobes on each side doing power slides so I need to drop some $ on my bike now for sure. To Dunlop's credit, they tore all the way down to the cords!

Posted by: Trigger1911---------------------

Hey JasonJ, Need a Teraflex? I got one cheap.

Posted by: JasonJ---------------------

Yeah Ill give it a try. Is is a good intermediate tire? Youll have to come out to ride to give it to me though

Posted by: RockRockRock---------------------

Is bonner part of RAC?

I've been going up there maybe 3 times a month. Burma rd and the side west of that too. I can't get enough. I'm looking to link up with some experienced guides for the area.

We did find the one singletrack that has the monster downhill and swerve left to avoid the tree at the bottom.

I will vouch that Lost Trails can't hold a candle to RAC. The rocks are ridiculous and the single track is nothing like what can be had in the coal fields.

Posted by: scooter1130---------------------

OK since it seems like people are misunderstanding what I have said about lost trails...

I never said Lost trails was better than RAC. Myself I would prefer RAC, Tower City, the old Paragon area any day just due to the size and variety of terrain. My reason for mentioning lost Trails for a get together was because it is the easiest place to acess with a group who are traveling, and can't get a RAC permit, or dont want to buy a yearly pass for Tower City to ride 1 weeeknd. Nobody else had mentioned anything about a ride, so I thought I would throw it out as an idea.

There are definitely better/larger areas to ride than Lost Trails, but for those of us who have limited riding time, and dont want to drive 2 hours every weekend, its a great place to ride.

Again, if anybody else has a suggestion for a spring ride, by all means, post it. Although it doesnt look like theres much interest in a spring ride right now anyway.

Posted by: Trigger1911---------------------

Lost trails. Its not just the ride but the people you ride with!

Posted by: CRFGuy---------------------

Hey rock rock rock
How is it that we haven't seen you there yet? Jason, Steve, Brad, John, Darrel and I are regulars to the Berma Rd parking area, which by the way runs pretty much East and West So you're usually riding either north or south from it. Your welcome to join us if you like. I'll post toward the end of the week as to which day we'll be there.

Gordon

Posted by: CRFGuy---------------------

Oh by the way no 8 b's or Bonners is there own thing and has nothing to do with RAC although you can probably connect the dots and get there but just make sure to stop in and pay Mrs. B for the day ride.

Posted by: CRFGuy---------------------

So who's in? Looks like we might get a little rain late in the day but other then that should be ok. I plan on meeting ready to ride by 10:00am Berma Rd. Should be a good ride since they have had plenty of rain to keep the dust down.
