I'm wondering if it is safe to use Shell Rotella synthetic 5w40 in my VW 2.0 turbo engine. I'm satisfied that it will provide more than adequate lubrication, but I'm concerned about potential damage to the catalyst from some of the additives.

Is my concern warranted?

Isn't it a bit heavy for a modern VW Turbo?

5w40 is the specified weight.
