1) your physical size (both height and weight are important)
I am 5'11 and weigh about 175 lbs.
2) How physical / aggressive are you ?
On a scale of 1-10; I am a 7.
3) what do you plan to ride- MX/SX tracks, woods, fields with friends or ?????
Ride mainly in the sand dunes. Ride very seldom anywhere else.
4) Do you have any riding experience?
Approximately 10 yrs. on four wheelers.
5) Do you think you will race ?
No
6) Are you mechanically inclined and will you be doing your own bike work?
Plan on doing own bike work.
7) Do YOU have a preferance to a brand/ motor choice (2 or 4 stroke)?
No preferance
8) Do you have a dealer close by your home that you might use and what brand(s) does he carry?
All brands accessible.
9) How much ($) do you plan to spend on a bike?
No more than $1500 since it is my first bike and first time riding.
10) Do you live in California?
No, Utah
11) Your age?
17 (18 in three days )
12) anything else that you think would help form an opinion
I currently ride a Polaris Predator 500, so I am used to the power. But I am guessing the power to weight ratio on a dirt bike is a lot different.

I am new to dirt bikes so any suggestions will help.

Thanks

Id probably go with a 450. For riding sand, you want something with a lot of torque and since you have experience on an ATV I dont think the power would be too much for you.
As long as you start slow and build up your confidence as you transition from an ATV to a bike, having respect for the power of a 450; you will be fine.

You can't get a good 450 for $1500.

Get an RM250, CR250, or YZ250, mid to late nineties vintage.

Ive seen plenty of 400s, 426s and even 450s go for $1500 or less. Especially in today's economy, where people are sometimes desperate for money, you can get bikes that are practically new for next to nothing.

Thanks for your input. I have narrowed it down to a few bike with your help. Now the negotiating begins.

No, it will be diamond in the rough if you find a GOOD 450 for under $1500. I think a 250f or 125 2t will fit you nicely. I would lean a little more towards the 250f with your atv experience but the 125 2t would be easier to find for under $1500.
