How wide tyres?

I'm going to buy some new sets of tyres for my bikes and i wonder that which one is better to ride:wider tyre(140/90) or thinner tyre (110/90)?
What do you suggest to buy for mx tracks riding and what for woods?
How much handling depends on tyre wideness?
