by some moron on the "top bolt" (as it is refered to in the service manual)

1991 KDX-200 fork legs.

Roughly 1 1/16" or 22mm socket/wrench.

..how in the world can I break these things loose to change to fresh fork oil ???????

Impact wrench and a large socket would be the ticket. If you don't have that, a bit of heat might help. Make sure the top clamp is loosened up too.

Personally, I wouldn't use an impact wrench on an aluminum fastener. I would make sure the top triple clamp bolts are loose...as j_d said...the bottom triple clamp is tight, and put the correct size socket on that nut and a long 1/2" drive breaker on it. It will come loose.

third them top triple clamp lose first!!

I'll fourth loosening the top triple clamp bolts!

Even after you break the cap loose you will be fighting those clamp bolts the entire way out unless you loosen them way up first.

Not sure what the manual calls for in the way of torque, but the cap really does not need very much. I know that big 22 mm head must be hard to resist for some.

Loosened the top pinch bolts easily and finally broke them loose.

Still WAY too tight from whoever had tightened them before.

Thanks to all for the great advice ..
