New project, the XR500RB goes for rec' reg' friday and the man that sevices my fire extinguishers seen it and said he had an IT425 that I can have. Typical older bike air cleaner not fitted properly and dusted big time as well as anything not required for forward motion missing. Of course like the XR its a short run model with few parts still available.Anything I should know about and watch out for with this old girl?

the bike should share a lot with the 79yz/it 400, they are their own design but a 465/490 rod if I remember correctly was the same length and bearings but a heck of a whole lot heavier and a 465 piston has a different pin height so a spacer will need to be made to fit under the jug.

Sounds like a 2.5mm spacer? That will be good as there doesn't appear to be much industry support for this motor.

some times you get lucky on those auction sites , SpeedandSport in Pennsylvania, U.S.A is an old Yamaha dealer that specializes in buying up discontinued & N.O.S parts to help keep some of these older bikes going. They are good. I am sure there are others in the world but they are the only ones I know of

Rick Horvat, here in the states has both rod kits and piston kits for the IT425.

Thanks, better stop dreaming and get it split and make sure the gearbox is good.

Split the cases, gearbox perfect and got a genuine rod locally for $107. Now for the Piston I'll try Rick tonight.
