I want my Dirt Week!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: mdkuder---------------------

Dirt Week? Dirt Day? Dirt Hour? Anybody.......

Posted by: Chili---------------------

I'm in, where are you going to host the event?

Posted by: Senior KX Rider---------------------

I have dreams..........................of DirtWeek

Posted by: Patman---------------------

Set it all up and I'll make plans to be there.
(small print: provided it's close enough, at a place I want to ride, during a time that fits my schedule, if you have prizes, can make sure everything runs like clock work, blah. blah, blah...)

Posted by: scar tissue---------------------

I was just talking to my old buddy Thumbs over lunch about how cool the dirt weeks were. And what a massive task it would be putting that together. I m glad we were able to be apart of them.

Posted by: OnAnySunday---------------------

I'll bring the beer!

whats that? HOW many people would be coming????

OMG

Might have to rent a semi?
"EEEaast bound and down, loaded up and truckin'! We gonna do what they say cant be done!"

(i may reconsider that first statement........)

Yup ... months of planning for the entire Okie clan ... for the rest of us ... except Thump ... our work started when we showed up ... well except for those that had to reserve trailers ...

As much stuff as we all bought to prepare for that week and the cost of dragging it from whereever to Cooperland, you think O would have sent us a stimulus check if we promised to hold DW again.

Posted by: motometal---------------------

good times indeed. I still occasionally explain the whole thing to a new rider I meet. They can relate but even if I gave a blow by blow of every moment and showed all the pictures, they wouldn.t get the real feel of it without having experienced it.

Posted by: TRexRacing---------------------

Never able to make one.Do it in the east and I'll find a way.

Posted by: Patman---------------------

YOU do it in the east and we'll find a way. There's good riding in WV & PA, I've been there and done that.

Posted by: TRexRacing---------------------

Fine.It will be next spring if can get some commitments.Doubt I'll be able to latch on to anything like Cooperland though. No bullsh!t if there's enough interest I'll start as soon as that's apparent.I'll look into places this week. How many showed up for the events?I need some numbers to approach these people with.

Posted by: TRexRacing---------------------

Damn what did I just do?

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

Nothing yet.....

Here's all ya gotta do.

(Before any steps, have a great family, all willing to dedicate 6 months of their lives to put the dream together..)

Step 1. Set up a website.
Step 2. Get lots of members.
Step 3. Convince a LOT of companies to give the members stuff.
Step 3. Convince a track/riding area to get involved.
(keep in mind, you need moto and woods in one place)
Step 4. Get about 20 people to help coordinate / develop / manage events.
Step 5. Get lots of people to come (gotta keep the companies happy (exposure) You'll need about 500 riders to make the companies happy.
Step 6. Get KTM, Yamaha, Honda, etc. to show up and let peeps ride their bikes.
Step 7. Do your best to make it all feel like family.
Step 8. Not be too in love with your dollars.
Step 9. Have fun!

Simple.

Looking forward to the date and location! I for one will be there

Posted by: TRexRacing---------------------

The ball is rolling.Shooting for a mid-June thing but that's real flexible. For now any updates will be here.

Posted by: BSWIFT---------------------

I've had time contraints hampering my efforts for a 500 reunion in Stillwater. I'll keep working towards in. The dates will likely be more open than a return to Cooperland. Cost should be minimal if we can swing it.
If someone can set one up somewhere else, I'll make plans to be there, just won't be hauling a spode wash!

Posted by: TRexRacing---------------------

I was unaware anyone was trying to set one up.I didn't mean to step on anyone's toes.Sorry.

Posted by: MXSparx---------------------

What part of the East are you looking at?

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------

Give me enough warning, I will be there! I offer free labor and cooler thefts(my wife). Are dogs allowed?

No worry. No plans in stone or approvals as of yet.

Posted by: Patman---------------------

People always wanted a DW closer to them so it looks like the east and middle states are covered.

Posted by: TRexRacing---------------------

This is going to be a monster to pull off.I'll get it done. With times as hard as they are it may not be to the scale of previous events. But it's all about the riding isn't it?As long as we have a good time riding it'll be a success.

Posted by: _JOE_---------------------

If you build it I'll try and come......the further north you go the more likely I will be there. I would be more than willing to help circulate flyers and what not in my area.

I won't be upset if there's no demo rides or give aways, just a sweet place to ride and some good folks to share my time with will do it for me. Well, you gotta have good food too, but that tends to come with good people.

Posted by: Patman---------------------

Good food = Camp Tejas

Well and Eddie's Tri-tip

and Oldguys brats....

Posted by: Dapper---------------------

Dirtweek. One of the best times I ever had in my life. It was worth the 23 hour drive. Miss you guys.

Posted by: RM_guy---------------------

Dapper!!! You live!!! Are ya still riding? I'm setting up a ride at Lost Trails on the 22nd if you are interested. Check the Damn Yankee forum

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------

I need nothing for give aways, but the kids? I can scrounge some trophies together though!

Posted by: TRexRacing---------------------

..........................

Posted by: RM_guy---------------------

Where in PA?

Posted by: BSWIFT---------------------

I would be up for a good "spode trip".

mmmmmm..... Dirt Week, best vacation my family and me ever had!

Posted by: Papakeith---------------------

PA? really? I'm there! DW was really a 4 day event anyway if memory serves. People showed up early, but the events didn't really get going until weds or so did they?

Posted by: _JOE_---------------------

Where the heck is TRex?

Posted by: RM_guy---------------------

Not sure but I have heard of it. I think it's near Philly??

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------

Kinda got quite for a while, EH?

Posted by: TRexRacing---------------------

What do you wanna hear?

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------

A date and location would be pretty cool. Any volunteers yet?

I answer that when it's concrete.

Not a one.

Posted by: RM_guy---------------------

I don't know where you are looking but if you do a Google search on motocross tracks in pa there are a ton of places and a bunch have trails too.

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------

Well the tentative mid June is cool, but PA is a pretty big state! And are you getting and responses to local help/volunteers?

Posted by: Patman---------------------

Here's a suggestion to help ya' along. If you are serious and if you have secured some local help ask Okie to open a Spodefest / DW forum to help with planning. Those of us that have done it will be glad to help point you in the right direction to save on the learning curve.

Posted by: _JOE_---------------------

There sure are alot of possibilities. Some close to me, some quite far away.

Posted by: _JOE_---------------------

Let me know if you need something done.

Posted by: truespode---------------------

I planned a Spodefest in 2000 before the first dirtweek.

http://truespode.net/ride_reports/sf2000.htm

It was a small affair but fun nonetheless.

Just plan it and those that can come will. Don't worry about making it bigger or better than anything. It is about friends and riding and that is all that matters.

Ivan

Posted by: Patman---------------------

Come on Ivan you know it's really about the give aways and planned events

We had those too. Just don't ask how I did in the wheelie contest

At least I did win the Spode award... still have the trophy.

"If only my arms were longer I could complete the fender grap and salvage some points"

Posted by: truespode---------------------

You know... I almost forgot. YOU WERE THERE!

You remember the give aways from MX South and Smackover Motorsports. Jim Cooks busted up belly and he refused to go to the doc. Trying to smash Gomer's spark plug so he couldn't start his bike.

Lots o fun.

Wow. I almost forgot you mad it there too.

Sheesh... I'm getting old.

Ivan

Posted by: Patman---------------------

Ummm I'm pretty sure I wasn't at THAT one.

Posted by: truespode---------------------

You're right... I confused you with Spodekill... I met you the time you came to SC and had dinner at Gomer's.

Told ya I'm old

Ivan

I was going to mention that about this thread being in the flame forum???? But way cool Truespode, longer arms indeed! Looks like it was a brand new front number plate?

Posted by: Patman---------------------

OMG dinner at Gomers that was a great evening and one I'll never forget! Good times for sure!! Wiring the grips was classic Gomer.

yes. Sort of. The first year I attended, I think Jake and I showed up Wednesday. After that, it was always Sunday or Monday if I remember correctly. It's a long ways to travel for an "extended weekend". Even though there were no official events the first couple days, it was still a lot of fun and nice to have that much more opportunity to ride, in case the conditions weren't so good the later part of the week.

I think it took a couple days just for my body to get used to riding that much, and sleeping in a tent on the ground after a night of adult bevs around the campfire.

Doing the logistical stuff is as important as the planning. It really doesn't take that much planning, just the doing. When I put together the "Spodewash", I just "southern engineered-it" together. I saw some improvements in subsequent years and was most definitely popular at the end of each day.
Select a time, a aplace, and a cost necessary to cover as much of the expenses as possible. If your planning racing, check with the track owner about insurance. If it is going to be fun riding only, the track owner's insurance will possibly cover it. Hollar at some of the local dealerships and hotels to see if they would consider sponsoring or throwing some deals your way. If they have concerns or questions, get a hold of me and I'll let them know the types of responses we got here in Oklahoma.
My work at the moment is hectic to say the least and I even had to turn down riding this weekend with the Heartland Spodes with good weather!!!!!!!!!! Be mindful that the snowball rolling down hill will get bigger.
On a side note, I traveled to DW01 in Casey, IL. Best road trip ever! The trip to PA would be a first for me and I will do everything I can to make it.

Is everyone welcome to "dirtweek" or whatever your going to be calling it next year??

Posted by: Patman---------------------

Be sure to have a release available for everybody to sign to help keep you from being at fault when they do something stupid.

Make sure everyone understands the rules and make sure those helping you are willing to help people comply. SLOW in the pits and ALWAYS a helmet when on a moving bike would be a couple of big ones.

Open fires can be a good time but might also lead to embers floating over and putting burn marks on vehicles or holes in tents and popups (ask me how I know).

Generators off by a specific time would be another item to address. (another thing I know about).

Posted by: Kav---------------------

I do beleave that Steff and I will be there with 3 bikes and maybe a quad.

Posted by: Kav---------------------

BTW: PM me if you need some help, I don't know what all I can offer, but I will do my best with what ever you give me.

Posted by: 380EXCman---------------------

FWI

The Valentines/Reno rides started out as a ladies ride and quickly became coed. Attendance was always very decent for an "informal" get together. Awesome nightlife as well.
