Who out there can date this photo? I am having trouble with the CZ.
Thanks,
Jon K.

1969-1971 or so. It's a side piper.
Is that a Jim Gianatsis photo from Dixie Cycle News? Looks like it's taken somewhere in Mississippi during that era.

Dang HT! You're good!
Don't know if if is Gianatsis or not, but the location is indeed Gulfport Miss. That's Kerwin Ross up front, followed by John "Frog" Burgard. Don't know any of the rest.
I am in awe of the good form exhibited by Ross. Dang, that's pretty!
I was struggling with the CZ, as I thought that the 68 / 70 had a left side pipe. Not so . . . . oops!

Isn't that Brad Lackey standing on the pegs?

That's great. No crowds,TV cameras.Looks like a bunch of friends racing through the woods on some trails.

I can associate "Ghost" with ghost cycles, Barry Higgins, and Sonny DeFeo.
I can also find reference that DeFeo did indeed visit the Gulfport MX Track, where this photo was shot.
One of my buddies recalls that the "Ghost" was some sort of hot shot CZ (is that a CZ?) rider that was sent down on a PR trip. Or maybe to "smoke the locals" in my buddies terminology.
Could that be DeFeo?

Ghost Motorcycles was a New York dealership owned by Sonny DeFeo's family. The three riders that they are most known for sponsoring were Sonny, Barry Higgins, and the first female to have an AMA pro license, Kerry Kleid. That could very well be Sonny on the CZ.
Jon, I suspected that was the Gulfport MX track. I grew up in LA (lower Alabama) during the hey-day of racing along the Gulf Coast. Gianatsis lived in Gulfport-Biloxi and covered racing throughout the Fla. Panhandle, Mississippi, and Louisiana area. I can't drive through that area today without thinking about all of the tracks that once dotted the area. I made a list of over 100 racetracks that I raced from 1971 until today. It's a shame, but most are long gone and forgotten.
That photo brought back a lot of memories for me. Thanks for posting it.

Did anyone hit the track in Laurel, Ms, around 76~77? When I lived down there I was begging for a track to ride at, that was still open! I moved in around mid 77 and it just closed, I did reopen it a few times. 76 250 Montessa hauled some serious butt, and cornered like a dream with Marzochies on both ends. Getting parts was a nightmare, the beginning of mail order days? Biloxi was not far,40 miles south of Laurel?

Giantasis himself has verified that is indeed DeFeo.
Still don't know who #7 is.
Great fun!
Posted by: dirt bike dave---------------------
Could Giantasis verify the exact date & location?
That might help others figure out who #7 is.
I can't read what it says on his jersey front. Any guesses?

No, Jim was starting to talk about $$, so I didn't ask him to dig very deep. He didn't seem to remember me anyhoo.
We are certain that it is Gulfport Mississipi, but the year is up in the air a bit. We are in contact with Burgard, maybe he will have a good recollection.

I'm surprised you got Jimmy away from the calendar girls.
Posted by: Jon K.---------------------
Yes, the calendar girls are very much a problem, for me at least.
I had a tough time getting to the bottom of the page to find his Email.
