Knuckle Buster update

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: SGJ_Johansen---------------------

section 2 and 3 are laid out. don't have the mileage yet but wow. It put me on the ground a dozen or more times yesterday. Lots of wet stuff hidden in the grass/weeds.

I don't have a name for the 2nd section yet. But "pine flats" the 3 section is a blast.

The section at my house is getting started I am sure that it will get a catchy name as well.

This will not be your typical sissy enduro Ball buster would be a better name shaping to be a great race

Brian

Posted by: Fred T---------------------

If you kill the riders they will not return, the numbers drop, the club loses money and the enduro disappears.

You make a fun, well organized enduro that takes points from every one, they enjoy their day, make it to work on Monday and the enduro prospers.

Best of luck with your first enduro............

Posted by: katoom125---------------------

the 1st "northern" section is also laid out - finished this weekend. it too is not a laid back smell the roses type trail ride but then you wouldn't want it that way - would you? it's certainly doable by all - some slower than others of course - but again, that's the way it should be - you'll drop a point here and there.

Posted by: tdunn976---------------------

no worries, it will be right or not done at all!
no kill them attitudes, fun, technical, but work on monday.

Posted by: SGJ_Johansen---------------------

wet logs and being first bike through were the only issues a few more bikes to break in the trail and it will be good to go.

Fred are you saying you like the wide open quad trails just kidding

I've been trying to find some sand whoops for Freddy but just don't have the proper terrain - in fact there are absolutely ZERO whoops of any kind, sand or otherwise - darn - maybe we should bring in a bulldozer - suppose?

Posted by: bruno670---------------------

Fun tough is what we are looking for. Grab a few points in each section. Stupid tough is not what we want. Challenge the AA riders but leave the C riders with a smile that they enjoyed the ride but can finish all the sections.

Posted by: SGJ_Johansen---------------------

Well I rerouted the trail with a quad, cut all the trees smoothed all the bumps and I have the paving crew all set up for tomorrow. Should be easy to get hot points now. If I can ride it anyone can.

Posted by: tdunn976---------------------

May be too technical still. defoliate all the trees and shrubs and we should be ready to go!

Honestly, I'll be up at A. Wrights property wed.
call me if your available.

Posted by: SGJ_Johansen---------------------

TD I don't know what time I will get home from work. Are you bringing a bike?

Posted by: Fred T---------------------

My entry is already in their mail box. I ain't skeerd. My advice is sound. Do yoursleves a favor and pre ride the entire course in one day and see how it stacks up after you have it all laid out, if you had fun and would enjoy riding it then pat your selves on the back. If it sucked then fix it.

Stop pounding on your your chests and git to work.

had not planned on it was going to build bridges

Posted by: bruno670---------------------

Why, he can't ride. I do have some antique training wheels off Tj's PW that we can bolt on. Maybe he can stay upright for a few feet.

Posted by: PoeBrian---------------------

Aprox. milage? Restart format or not? How many sections?

Posted by: bruno670---------------------

Still adding mileage. So far close to 50 event miles. More land to come. Mixed format not sure on the sections. Not alot of info, sorry. Gotta keep you in suspense.

I'll know more in 2 weeks as I'll be back and forth to Gowan, the @ Hill And Gully.
Then full speed ahead.
Prefer to do Restart. NO timed section on roads!

A marketing suggestion: you may want to advertise this enduro as located in Greenville instead of Gowen. I am in the Grand Rapids metro area and had to look up where Gowen was, especially when the place wasn't even spelled correctly on the D14 enduro website. Most people in West MI know where Greenville is and this change may increase some local participation.

This is from one person who make a small clerical error and it has never been corrected. I thank you for your concern. It was originally planned to start in Gowen and until a couple of weeks ago moved ( due to land issues)to Greenville. Once your AMA application is submitted you are sort of committed to your location.

Posted by: fatherandson---------------------

Good suggestion. We had some great media coverage for the Jack Pine from a newspaper that was 25 miles away. We need to advertise this race as the first one in the lower LP in a LONG time.

Coopersville is metro GR? Must have been a lot of development on the west side of GR in the past 20 years.

Heh, I am originally from the East side...if towns like Howell are now considered metro Detroit, I guess Coopersville can be metro GR.

Is there a BAD row number?

Posted by: Ward---------------------

The event flyer says race is 100% on private property but plate and lights are required. If the race is on private property why are plate and lights needed?

Posted by: SGJ_Johansen---------------------

All minutes have their advantages. hint don't wear your white riding gear if you are after the 20's Fast Freddie Tip spray your bike with WD40 to slide thru the trees faster. Whoops now Don Marsh knows yours secret

Rode part of 2nd and all of 3 sections tonight what a blast, bruno was whoop'n one second an cuss'n the next

You have to transfer to sections via county/state roads

The test sections are on private property, but to connect them we use roads in Montcalm County. This event is too far south for the PA240 to affect. So all bikes must be street legal. It is my understanding an enduro has not taken place this far south in Mi in the past 30 years.

This past week I met with the Montcalm County Sheriff explaining how enduros work and open a line of communication between us. Several times he emphasized the need for the bikes to be road legal, riders to obey traffic laws, and riders need to have a valid license with cycle endorsement. I reinforced several times that the riders understand this.

Posted by: bruno670---------------------

Just to inform everyone that even though it is all new trail our plans are to make sure that it is completely rideable and that it will be "burnt" in and PLENTY OF ARROWS to mark the course.

Thanks for the follow up to bad we can't get a waiver in lieu of PA240.

Posted by: bruno670---------------------

I tried. Sheriff was not very co-operative. Hopefully if the new measures that are in front of the state legislature get approved then maybe next year. You could always borrow a legal bike.

Posted by: Orangewoods---------------------

and get a cycle endorsement.....

4 more miles in the books shapping up to be a good ride, thank to c-more and yzman and bruno's friend jim for helping out.

I will be there to run an emergency check. Due to holidays and family enduros I may not be there until the weekend of the event.

Jims moment of glory was spectacular

Had a blast helping out and burning in the trail. It is all really good stuff

Will there be any spectator areas?
Some local people I know are interested in watching some of the event, but I'm not sure what to tell them right now.

Posted by: bruno670---------------------

We will have a map at signup for some "interesting" spectator areas. Bring the cameras, some moments will be memorable. Video cam would be best.. Action packed section...

Posted by: Shagy100---------------------

hey ill prolly have the helmet cam on so you should see some decent stuff

spectator spots will be limited as to the trail being held on private property. now if you know some of the land owners then you might have a chance of seeing some great spectator spots. Just because the land owners let us put a trail thru don't expect them to let the public in to watch.

Brian.

But if you want a "free pass" so to speak with some great spectating included - volunteer to be part of a check crew - we'll need lots of help there!!

Do you think we could sell tickets Randy?

Posted by: SGJ_Johansen---------------------

Well it ain't going to live up to the name Knucklebuster if they keep on pussifiying this event. Way too easy. Everybody is afraid someone might tip over or bang a bar on a sapling. I am not looking for a killer event just a good event trail that takes some points from everyone. Everything that I have put in is ride-able yes you might get little wet but not a mudfest.

Please show up and ride this event then let the guys know what you thing then we can adjust fire for next year.

OK had my rant let the fire fall where it may. I have broad shoulders and fireproof pants

Posted by: katoom125---------------------

All I know is that our sections are WAY fun to ride, what little time I've had to ride them - a surprising amount of variety in the terrain for this far south - and NOT 1 whoop to be seen!!

we're still adding more trail too with late addition land owner approvals - Bruno and Tom D are getting nervous that I'm taking so long getting all the arrows up (laugh) - it should be one great ride!!

Posted by: bruno670---------------------

I just wish that I could ride this one. After arrowing yesterday, that section look like fun. Maybe a sweep ride is in my future!!! Or heck a preride....hehehe

Posted by: Don Marsh---------------------

Word of advice.....someone needs to ride the complete thing at race pace. Not the individual sections like some clubs do.
Sounds like fun.

Posted by: SGJ_Johansen---------------------

the 3rd section got me for 6 min after a bunch of burn in riding today, fun stuff

Just wet from sweat. No dust either. Walking the fields in the morning now that's a different story

Thanks for all the help today. The swelling in the knee went down after icing and I can still limp around. But I think the riding may be done for a bit Hoping its just a sprain.

What did I miss?

I leave early and I miss out on all the fun huh

Posted by: katoom125---------------------

man, are you guys trying to scare the h--- out of everyone? - talking all this doom and gloom stuff - picking bikes up, injuries, all that sort of thing?
Hey, if we want anyone to sign up - maybe we should be talking what it's really like - these are new sections, Yes and there is still some stuff on the ground because there haven't been but a few bikes thru it - EVER! I have ridden more than half of the sections and each time thru it's more fun than the last time - NO injuries, No picking my bike up, JUST PLAIN FUN - NO deep sand - NO whoops - this is absolutely Great trail and will be a riot to ride - you shouldn't miss it -
SIGN UP, you'll have fun - these guys are just trying to scare you away with all this "trash" talking!!

I really enjoyed the section of wide, flat, freshly mowed trail thru the daisy fields. That was very nice

Thanks, you are helping a lot.

Posted by: SGJ_Johansen---------------------

I did not crash, just put a foot down on a greasy log and slipped and blew my knee, going less the 3mph just a freak accident. Most of the 4 lane stuff is well ridden in and looking good. I had a great time up until til that point. Nobody wadded up that I saw slow speed tip overs is what I saw.

Brian

Posted by: bruno670---------------------

Now for the true and real information; First half is 98% DONE. Course is well defined and well arrowed. Rain helped and I don't think that dust will be much of an issue. Trail is actually really fun, flows well , and best of all NO WOOPS!! North crew tells me that their section is 98% done, well arrowed and no dust or woops. I helped layout and arrow 2 sections and I wish I was riding this one! These guys are fantastic on layout. If you have any doubts on riding this one you will miss one of the funnest enduros in a long time. Please don't listen to the chatter from these other guys. You will kick yourself for missing this one!

Brian

A good enduro seems to claim a knee or two on the set up crew. Jackpine gets one every year. Chasing you got mine. Thanks to the early riders for running the risk and making corrections.

Posted by: Don Marsh---------------------

"A good enduro seems to claim a knee or two on the set up crew"

Hey I resemble that remark!
Don

Posted by: Fred T---------------------

Layout is brutal work, I had solid black and blue on both arms and shoulders arrowing the Jackpine and it all worked out. Glad to hear is is all working out and all the guys that are on early rows I want to thank in advance for making the trail perfect for us.

Posted by: SGJ_Johansen---------------------

Thank you Fred for letting the guys know how hard laying out trail/burning in trail is. From what I have seen of the southern sections this is going to be a fun time. a little bit of every thing.

Brian

Posted by: SGJ_Johansen---------------------

OK Guys I have gotten several e-mails with concerns about how tough the KnuckleBuster is going to be.

Well here it is. The guys laying out the enduro are all enduro riders/retired enduro riders. Not our first rodeo. We have all put lots of hours in to this event laying out, arrowing, brushing, and burning the trail. I have ridden 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5the sections. I have over 40 miles of walking and over 100 miles on the bike burning in the trail.

As some of the guys on this site know there has been many a mile of the Jackpine enduro that I have been first bike through. And yes you fall down once and a while.

While I have not ridden the northern sections yet I am sure that the guys up there are doing a bang up job as well.

If you are looking for a enduro that 10 points wins it this is not for you. If you are looking for a quality enduro with great single track trail with no whoops and a great time sign up today.

From what I can see it is no tougher that any Jackpine that I have ever ridden/raced.

If after this post you still think its too tough then sign up for a check crew and kick yourself in the butt afterwards for not riding.

Comments like the one above are probably why you are getting the e mails.

Posted by: SGJ_Johansen---------------------

Jeeper I guess there is no sense of humor out there. Wish I had a $10 bill for every time I have seen you do a freddie tip over while laying out or burning jackpine trail yet by race time the trail is good and defined. point taken and point given.

Brian

Posted by: D.LEATHERS---------------------

C'mon Guys,
It's a F-IN ENDURO it's supposed to be a "CHALLENGE" & tough. If you can't handle it go trailride super-trimmed orv trail, or go ride MX. It used to be we didn't bother to trim sections, now we spend more time trimming then we do putting up arrows It just goes to show how the clubs have started catering to all the cry-baby whiners, who want to ride super-highway enduro events, so they can all trophy their class. What the hell is next??? Just shut-up & ride or stay home!!!

This one should be a cake walk for him. Ride it as a trail ride. He doesn't have to ride it to win. just learn timekeeping and have FUN.

Yes we have a gas trailer. Yes, we have two gas stops. At this time we are thinking one gas truck can make both gas stops, but that may change as we are finalizing details. So If you are using our gas trailer be ready to split your gas up.

So there is enough time for some one running late on the last row to get their gas from the first stop on the trailer and it will have enough time to get to the first riders at the second stop? Just trying to be prepared in case I can't find a gas crew to mooch off of.

Mike,

I am planning to be there. I was planning to ride but Brian scared me.

I can help out if needed or I can run gas and band-aids for Freddie.

Tim

142 miles! Looks like we'll get our money's worth. And a 10:00 key time. Good thing it's close to home. Except for Nicolino and crew.

yup, Badgerdad will be there, badgermom will most likely not. As for the Alma crew, I'll see what I can do, but they've probably got some crazy 24hr ultra-endurance mountain bike suicide ride, i mean "race"

Posted by: Iron Mike---------------------

Hope it goes great! Wish I could be there. Rip it up guys!

Posted by: Don Marsh---------------------

FYI
Anybody coming down from the north remember the bridge on 131 between Fife Lake & Manton is closed until May. The detours are M66 & M37.

Did you ride the Harley?

Posted by: SGJ_Johansen---------------------

Thanks DW!

That means alot to all of us that worked hard to put this on. There is more land coming on board for next year so we may not have so many road sections.

Thank you all for coming an riding the event.

Thanks to all you guys who put this event on, many people enjoyed it, including myself... can't wait for next years!

Posted by: Fred T---------------------

Yeah, I ended up enjoying the day, next year see if you can find more logs though. Long day on the bike, the checks made you think. I ended up smelling out a good section to make up for some lost time, I figured you wouldn't have a check until the end because there wasn't enough mileage to have an "in" ck and an "out" check by the reset and I guessed right.

Thanks to everyone and all the hard work that is involved. It was cool to see a lot of enduro riders helping at the event.

Posted by: WomanRider---------------------

Thanks DW and Jordan.

If any one has any pictures can you email them to me to put in the local paper. We need to promote our sport. I was not able to take any myself. the Local paper wants pictures. If anyone took Pictures of the Grand Champ, A, B, or C overall with their trophy or riding the trail I could use those too.

Thanks to all who came to ride our event.

To All,
I send my thanks and graditude to all involved in set up, lay out, checking etc.. for this event. It has been a whirl wind to put to bed.

I especially would like to thank the riders and their families for coming and all their support of the Enduro series!

I appreciate that all of the riders were courteous on the roads and no community complaints came up (except 1 at gas stop).

Thanks to the outside help that in no way benefitted from all their work on getting the Northern sections procurred and laid out, arrowed. With out you there was no Enduro!

A special thanks goes to the land owners. There gracious use of their land and the positive effects has already seen offers of more land for another run.

I personaly thanked as many people as I could there but if I misised anyone and especially the land owners please tell them THANKS!

Thank you for an outstanding event. The trail was awesome and arrowing was good. I sure hope you can keep doing this one.

Posted by: bterp67---------------------

I am very impressed with this event.
Great trail, arrowing & check positions.
It's fun to ride an event with timekeeping sections again. Thanks to all that helped and worked hard to make it happen.

Posted by: salgeek---------------------

That was some fine trail! Some big logs out there . Enjoyed the bog crossings - . Very impressive well run event! Thank you for all the hard work that went into the Knuckle Buster. I sure hope this event is on the 2010 schedule.

That big double set near the end was interesting. I went over them. I didn't want to let the spectators down. LOL.

Posted by: salgeek---------------------

bb - that explains why I was booed -lol, as I took the EZ way around.

Posted by: ws6transam---------------------

Just how big were these logs, and how close were they to one another? Were they laying perpendicular to the line or placed at an angle?

Posted by: bbarel---------------------

I'm just guessing maybe 18", perpindicular to the trail, and maybe 20' apart with plenty of room to setup for the 2nd one.

Posted by: PoeBrian---------------------

WOW, Much better than I expected!!! Short sections with a higher level of difficulty! Fun, Fun, Fun!!! I would definately return next year.

Thanks to all the people who worked out all the difficulties of putting on a new event!!!

FANTASTIC!!! Hopefully the community will be okay with allowing a race next year!

To whom it may concern, please pass on thanks to all the land owners who allowed this to happen!!!

Posted by: racer493---------------------

i would like to thank all who helped put on this event, you ded a great job and I had a blast.

Posted by: cmore---------------------

Leave some road sections in! Us old guys need a breather now and then.

Posted by: fatherandson---------------------

All good feedback.

A number of the people who were the backbone of this event and did a lot of the work spend time on this forum. They may be out taking down arrows this week, but I am sure they will read your comments. I had limited involvement and appreciate the feedback (positive and constructive). No event will be perfect and we are always looking for ways to improve the enduros in Michigan.

This was a well-organized event, had a good mix of technical and flowing trail, great check crews, and awesome trophies.

And congratulations to Craig Hamilton on a great ride... He took 2nd Overall B riding an old KDX he borrowed from his little brother!

Thanks Smit Dog! Riding thet KDX made me apperciate how good my KTM 200 is.

I had a blast yesterday riding this enduro. Hopefully the get some more land next year so we can have longer sections and shorter road riding.

Posted by: TJC510---------------------

i appreciate all the thanks, Im glad everyone i talked to had fun. it makes all the work worth it. i know some worked on this more than i did, and without 3 certain people (i think they know who they are, all are on here) this event would NEVER had happened.

I've posted some pics taken by my son Aaron, Casey Koch (Ken's son) and one of the neighbors/property owners. I will probably post some more this weekend if I get what the neighbor took.

The good news is I did well in the enduro and had a blast riding it.
The bad news is I lost my moose enduro pack in the beginning of the race. I came out on a road and felt for it and it was gone. I believe I lost it in the section after the restart at mile 30.Could be before that too. So by chance if any one sees it pulling arrows or has picked it up, please contact me.
Thanks,
Brian

Sure! If you want to include credits, just ask me which pic was taken by who. If you want full resolution, I can email them to you.
