im going to look for one of these and im curious if there is anything to look out for on one when buying. what should i check when looking for one? thanks in advance.

first year or two had a few tranny issues. Other than that, make sure the oil has been changed regular. They are pretty bullet proof bikes if they have had oil in them.

Only bad thing about them is that they are very tall stock.

Let me say that its nice to see you moving away from big bore 2 strokes and looking at a bike that is more suited to your needs. I have a 2001 XR400 and I love the bike...lots of low end torque and low maintenance. I paid $1800 for mine...and it is damn near new...the foot pegs and rotors arent even worn down. You should be able to find one at a comparable price...maybe less.

Make sure it starts easily, cold and hot. Listen for any strange engine noises. Give it a good shake down. If it looks like it was ridden hard it probly was. Really clean bikes don't bring much more than neglected ones, so look around.

they have finicky carbs, probably up to 99. But they are also pretty bulletproof.

The shifter is steel painted butter.

a top clamp is nice to get the bars out of your lap.

it'll turn on a dime, sometimes quicker than you want.

Stock fork springs are pretty light, see if whoever is selling it has made a change

the shock has very slow rebound damping

Otherwise, pretty bulletproof

I have a '96 XR400. It's not competative on a motocross track but alot of fun and stone reliable. Most of the mods I have done to it are to reduce weight. It weighs ~246lbs with no fuel set up for mx. It weighs ~250lbs for woods. Don't believe the published dry weight, its way heavier.
I have also done suspension mods and engine mods. I've done just about everything someone can do to one short of an aluminum frame and USD forks. If you have any specific questions ask away.

thanks, but i already bought a new 4x4 atv. for the trails around here, i think a 4x4 is better because of all the rocks and mud.
