1983 honda cr 480 shifting problem

Hi, I was riding my cr 480, I stopped being able to shift into third gear, the other gears were fine. This symptom occurred suddenly. When you try to shift into third you can hear metal like it's trying to but can' t get there. Use of the clutch had no effect on this problem. When I got home I tore the bike down, split the cases. I could find no damage to any gears, the shift drum and forks appeared fine, no metal fragments. Has anybody experienced this on a 480 before? The external shift mechanism looks fine also, I do see a slight bend in the shift shaft from an earlier spill, but still appears serviceable. Thanks .
