Jerseys - fitment?

I was looking at getting a new jersey and the sizing from a couple of manufacturers really has me confused.

One was O'neal. A small adult size was equivalent to a 42. Uh, I am an adult and my chest size is no where close to that as I normally wear 36-38 size shirts/jackets.

So, are they really supposed to be that much larger for ease of movement or am I going to have to wear a youth sized jersey?
