Got some decent photos from the AHRMA vintage races this past weekend at Portland, so here's a sampling

AWESOME PICS!!!! Thank you for coming to PTR to see the race, We had a great week-end of vintage racing. The AHRMA guy's & gal's are great people & we enjoy having them race at our track.

I was intending to ride on Sunday until I discovered what it would cost. Apparently, AHRMA has become a distinct and separate entity so riding would have required AHRMA membership ($45.00) plus another $45.00 to ride one class plus $25.00 for additional classes AND $15.00 per day per person gate fee ($120.00 for the weekend for the four of us)………all for thirty minutes of fun. So……what the heck am I going to do with an AHRMA membership until next summer when the series comes back to Michigan, unless I am able to travel around the country and race? Frankly, I don’t think they are going to survive on their own.

On top of all that, I was hobbling around with a strained muscle in my lower back….old age I guess.

All that said, it was really cool to wander around and look at all the old bikes. Some of those guys go incredibly fast on pre-1975 bikes with virtually no suspension. Good show.....I will go again next summer for sure.

Badgerman - Exactly why I like MichiganVintageMotocross (dotcom) when my restos are done. I've been to a slew of AHRMA races arond the country and although nice they are more like racing the nationals (travel wise). Check out the website for our own racing series. They are part of GLMX which I belong to. DC Plastic is a sponser in that series as well. The grass race at Red Bud is also attended by the Michigan series. I had to put my projects on hold while I remodel my upstairs. I was hoping to put my bikes on the track for my 50th b-day but....

Great photos BTW

Nice pics, I had to look twice to see if Phil took them! Portland eh, I have not been there , yet! Racing the older bikes on today's tracks is nuts. That track looked suited for the time? Thanks for the heads up on race fees also Badgerman, ouch! Good thing I know they still run vintage classes at the local ama races. Not as many stink'in rules, or people trying to get into my pockets!

I have thought about D-14/GLMX VMX but they are riding the same track as the modern bikes. The AHRMA race was nice because they routed around the large jumps….it was a very nice vintage bike track. I would like to attend/ride the RB grass track race but I think I might have a conflict that weekend.

In reality, it was my back that kept me off the track. If I had felt better, I probably would have sucked it up and paid the price to ride.

Yeah, the kid takes a nice photo. He has taken some really nice pics of his sister and I trail riding this summer. It’s kinda cool having your own personal photographer along on your outings.

Gerhards Megacross next weekend, and Redbud grass track mid oct, got it.

Thanks everybody!

I keep finding more and more good ones; I took about 600 photos and haven't had the time to go through all of them...

QUIZ:

Anybody know what the bike in the first photo of the thread is?? (Badgerman be quiet ) I've never heard of them until the races, this guy had three of them all in perfect condition, and was one of the fastest guys out there...

Posted by: Fred T---------------------

AJS or Greeves. It's hard to tell.

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------

Monark? I think I spelled it correctly?

Posted by: Uchytil---------------------

It's a late 60's AJS (probably 69).

Posted by: Uchytil---------------------

A Stormer, BTW

The british bikes were ok I guess, but I like anything gemacht in deutschland hence my Maicos although I'd love to see some OSSA Phantom pics sometime. Keep up the good work Redgreen!

Posted by: BadgerMan---------------------

The fellar's Jersey might give a hint, LOL!

He had three of them.....one with a Yamaha engine. They were all museum quality.

Posted by: RedGreen---------------------

Correct, yeah his shirt did kinda give it away...

One of my favorite bikes there was an old Triumph 4-stroker. Although I love the two-strokes, this bike sounded awesome I'll see if I can get some pictures of it up tonight

At a family enduro last month there was a guy and father riding a Burleson vintage Husky automatic and an OSSA in the event. The Husky quit running and they rode 10 miles "buddy style".

It was a twin.......way cool.

If I had 3500 bucks, I could get the bike I paid 700 bucks for,http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1975...p4506.m20.l1116 , Who would have thought to look at the guys jersey?

OMG……I would love to buy that bike! I rode a 1979 250VE back in the day. Selling that bike was one of the dumber things I have done. They are getting harder and harder to find since they never built more than about 1500 per year. The 360VB was always my favorite.

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------

Thorman75 bought that bike through good old cosmopolitan motors. The beteor? forks were bent, they sent him a set of Marazochi forks, hey they matched the shocks? He sold me the bike, he was going into the army, and ended up on Team Army MX???? I rode the piss out of that bike, I loved its handling and power. I hated the bogus clutch set up. It ended up in pieces at the curb for garbage collection, THAT really pisses me off now! 3500 dollars worth! I never was a big bore fan, they were actually slower to race on, even tracks like Redbud? And I have always hated the yellow bikes the worst. This is why I now have 3 of the piles in my garage ready to go back together, and beat the hell out of whats left of my back. Plus 50 class is coming really fast, I will be ready for the grass track race for sure! Wardy's next weekend will be pushing it, and I would still be in the plus 40? Keeping the Montesa running would surely keep me in touch with custom machine shop parts. So far, the 370 parts are out there, even the dreaded rod that is no longer available. The 400's I can still get almost all oem parts for them. Long term, I want back to the red, or maybe green, for vintage. Portland, 5+ hours away, damn Michigan is big!

Posted by: BadgerMan---------------------

I remember the hot Montesa setup was to mate a 360 top end with a 250 five speed transmission. I almost bought a 414VF back in the day......it was a beast!

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------

Even back in the day, I would have had a smile a mile wide myself, that set up is unimaginable! I remember Ossa day at Redbud, purple?, fiberglass and a bunch of fun,,,

I do not believe I would have looked at the jersey if I had known it was a hot female riding it! But the bike, its a beauty, AJS.

We go to great lengths at PTR to accomadate the vintage bikes when they come to our track, we try to give them the same track they would have raced back in the day, nice natural terrain gran-prix style MX track. We have been around since 1968 & remember our roots and the bikes and people that supported us to get us where we are today. Thanks again for posting & sharing the awesome pics!!!

Badgerman,
We DO NOT set the fees for the AHRMA events we have to charge what they tell us to, normally we charge 10.00 gate & 25.00 race fees as do all of the other CLUBS in district 14. If there was another option for running a vintage national we would be on it, unfortunally AHRMA has done a good job of being the only gig for vintage mx racing with large numbers of riders to make an event profitable. As with any organization they are not without their problems(ask Corky Root he is one of their officers) We hope we can continue to run vintage nationals for years to come, they are a GREAT group of people who have a passion for vintage mx bikes & racing them!!!

Dave Leathers.
