Who gives a shat, this is a DIRTBIKE website. Go talke to your buddies here: http://www.mmba.org/

Posted by: BadgerMan---------------------

I have a non dirt biking friend who is riding. I may go and spectate while getting in a little upland bird hunting and deer season scouting.

BTW, don't wear your brown jersey.

Yeah, I keep hitting my head.

Posted by: ChrisKring---------------------

ward is riding lead moto again this year. If I am not busy maybe I'll go up and run sweep again. Too much fun. Way more fun than riding it on a bicycle. And yes, I have raced it on a bicycle too many times. The only time it was ever fun was when I knew that once I finished I would get shuttled back to the start and get to sweep behind the pro women on my MX bike.

Breezing through last years results I noted that Mike Larocco raced it. Don't yell at him to get out of your way, DW! You might get more than you bargained for.

3,900 mtn bikers! The single largest mtn bike race in the US!

I was hoping that my boys (6 yrs) first race would be on a dirt bike....but I'm signing him up for the kids race at Ice Man! He's talking about it every day. Looks like we'll have to make the 50cc debut at Portland next spring

I'm the nicest guy you'll ever meet on the trail, as well as on a mountain bike

I'm hitting the Pando XC MTB race this Sunday - I know I told you it was Saturday. Maybe you can make it?..

I know it's hard to believe, but it's true... the first time he came up behind me a couple years ago this is what I heard:

"Please let me by when ever you feel safe enough to pull over"

No joke

Posted by: wyatt---------------------

Dw,

I'm in, never raced a mtb before but some people i thought
were friends talked me into it. There are other drners signed
up also. I rode the course labor day weekend, pretty sweet
but my bike needs motor work and whos idea was it to clip your feet to the pegs. Any drners need a place to crash I live 8 miles from the start.

Posted by: Yam7M---------------------

Stayin' at the Great Wolf Lodge with the whole family for the weekend, Wyatt....but appreciate the offer very much!

I would be at Pando DW.....or any one of the other festivities that my buddies have invited me too this weekend, including a bachelor party....but I'm going to my mother-in-laws family reunion in Pentwater to earn some brownie-points. Sounds like fun, right? My wife says I'm already acting like an ass about it, and we don't leave for a few hours yet. I am bringing the mtn bike though.....and probably hitting Owasippe Sat or Sun.

Posted by: Fred T---------------------

"FC"
If you want maximum points scored leave all your "toys" home and take walks with her or take her shopping. Unless of course you can wake up, peddle your azz off and be back to cook her breakfast before she wakes up then she won't give a shat what you were doing that early in the morning.

"My advice is free and worth what you pay for it"

Posted by: Yam7M---------------------

My sister-in-laws 53 yr old boyfriend is going too, Fred. He and I get along like J-Law-azz and Dungey. Can't wait. Two fun filled days. I hope I get lost at Owasippe.

Ride the red to the orange to the blue trail. You can defianatly get lost on the Blue trail if you turn off the marked trail onto a random 2 track. I think you might even be able to screw up enough to end up on the Holton moto trail.

I have found a few people out there with no idea where they were. Most of the time they are hikers. Just watch out for the crazy guy out there that thinks the blue trail goes across his land, the poachers and the skinny dippers. Probably too cold for the last one though.

Posted by: iroc8210---------------------

I was thinking about doing the Slush Cup and planning on doing the full IceMan next year. I didn't realize how fast registration fills for it.

Is anyone doing the Crystal Mtn Peak to Peak?

Posted by: Yam7M---------------------

IM fills up in about 24 hrs or less every year. Sign up is in Jan or early Feb. There are usually some spots available for sale on mmba's website: http://www.mmba.org. DW was able to buy an entry last week.

Managed to not get lost at Owassippe. Just stayed on the red....2 loops. Only saw 3 other riders out there on Sat afternoon. Trail is bad azz (where do you see the skinny dippers?) Heading there with our group on Wed night....5:00....you in DW?

Did Yankee on Sun when I got home....it's in rough shape

Posted by: ChrisKring---------------------

Glad you had fun riding Owasippe. I with the help of several others built the mtb trails back around 1996 and maintaned them up until a couple of years ago.

The "red trail" is now the original Red, part of the blue and part of the orange trail.

The "blue trail" is part of the original red trail and most of the original blue trail.

A couple of years ago somebody that couldn'r read a map decided that they needed to resign the whole place into an easier to follow system that in effect eliminated a bunch of good trail. About half of the orange trail was abandonded and many of the white trail connectors. I have a map with all of the trails if your interested.

Skinny dippers: on the original orange trail by the canoe livery. I have seen the same group about 5 times. They ride quads down there and enter the camp from the back side. Then I have seen a dozen other people over the years usually in the same location. They don't know your there until you ride out onto the beach.

I have also seen poachers, a DNR poaching sting operation, weed farmers, some freak with an AR15 that was convinced that the camp was "squatting" on his property, many lost people in BFE with no clue, etc.

Great trail though. You riding with the JCI crew on Wednesday?

Posted by: Yam7M---------------------

Yep on the JCI crew. Been riding with them every Wed for 3 yrs or so. We went there a couple weeks back, which was my first time. Regardless of the changes, the Red is an awesome trail. We had about 10.8 miles? Two times around is a good ride for a Wed night, especially with the sun dropping early. Although, I just gave Kennedy and Hackney their new lighting systems at lunch today. If you see them today, ask to check them out. Trailtech makes a mtn bike kit....1800 lumens. It's rediculous. Hackney looked like a little kid with a lolly pop. We might be going for 3 loops Wed just to see how the new lights work....they're sweet.

The canoe livery? Is that the "beach" that you come out on while on the Red trail, about 5 miles in? There's a short bridge over a creek and then you hit a nicely kept beach? I heard a bunch of noise there, but it was across the lake.

I've run into some weed farmers and trout poachers at Yankee.....but no nudity. Unless you count Whalen?

Yeah what Fred said, only washed up moto racers and Napper do this race. Although they do have the best after parties with the exception of Red Bud. The Bells Beer party is always a drunken good time and I hear Dark Horse Brewery Team will have another party as well.

Posted by: Wolverine423---------------------

I'll be leaving the Titus at home and riding my new 29r

I bet that Napper and Vman are still lurking on this site. Maybe they need a pit crew??

Riiiiiigggght. Maybe someone needs to let Becker (who placed really well in the Single Speed category in last year's IM, and is signed up again) know that? I'm sure he'd take the lable of washed up racer real well. Or you can line up in the M class with me at the next HS and show me how it's done?

And yes, the afterparties at mtb races are outstanding!

Posted by: Yam7M---------------------

Nice bike DW (big suprise, right?). Can you make it to Muskegon tonight?

Posted by: Don Marsh---------------------

Mark is staying at my house for the race.
Maybe I can follow him on the trail to see how washed up he is with my motorized wheel chair...

Posted by: Yam7M---------------------

Yeah, good luck with that, Don. Mark kicks my azz into the dirt on that pink bike of his!

Posted by: Fred T---------------------

For the record I "NEVER" said anything about washed up dirtbikers, never even bought that term up. This comment is all on Ward, he's stirring up that big pot not me. I was just giving DW some shat 'cause he was talking MTB stuff on here and showed him the way to the MMBA website in case he didn't know aout it.

Don't get too worked up Mark - Ward is a never was....As a matter of fact he suffers more injuries just trail riding than anyone I know of.....

Come on now my last injury was suffered at Loose Moose. But I will recover in time for Iceman. Hopefully my liver will be in shape.

Posted by: Yam7M---------------------

Got it DW. Did 2 at Owassippee last night. Second one finished the last 6 miles or so in the dark with the new lighting system. It was pretty sweet!

Posted by: 09oneL---------------------

I wish good luck to you nuts that are racing this event.

Posted by: iroc8210---------------------

After snowing on and off today, Looks like you guys are going to be lucking out for the weather too...nicest weather in weeks is being forecasted for Saturday...I'll be there spectating along the way somewhere. Good luck!

Thank the Lord that there will be that much beer. I may not be racing now. Some cutie who was texting this morning decided to blow through a red light.....resulting in T-boning me I'll probably tought it out though.....

My Duramax is totaled...Step bar is under the tranny; drivers side front wheel was torn completely off and found 20 yds away; interior messed up/cracked/broken; frame bent....and what's worse (I guess) is that I was bringing my race trailer to Kidner so that he could use it to pick up the banquet trophies! My trailer was ripped off of my truck from the impact. It's got some damage too. She was driving a Grand Am. She's OK...but I bet she'll be pretty sore tomorrow. Same for me. Not sure if I'll be racing now? But, I'll damn sure be drinking beer somewhere Sat night!

The cop said that it was a for sure trip to the hospital or morgue for me if I had been in anything other than that truck. Makes me really not want to go out and buy one of Barrack's little putt-putt "smart cars" now. You can have your Prius...I'll gladly walk away instead!

Posted by: Wolverine423---------------------

Dauuuuuum! Hopefully those really nice MTB lights you ordered me didn't get damaged....lol. Let me know when you need to settle up. Subaru for a replacement?...

Posted by: tdunn976---------------------

Good to see your up and writing, (walked away is a good thing).
Glad your ok!
Text me!?

Posted by: Ward---------------------

That sucks. I am sure several Bells will help deal with the pain.

No, they did not get damaged in the wreck!

Iceman Cometh report:

Started the race with the 40 + expert boys, since they started on the 4th row (done in time to get my boy ready for his race). The bruised ribs and soar neck were not going to help me with the chore of pedalling with 3,900 other crazy's, but I gutted it out.

At around the 1/2 way mark I actually was doing OK. Picking some guys off, etc. I was really surprised at how much I liked the trail. 30 miles was a tall order to make a point to point race fun. They did a great job of that. Anyways, at 1/2 way there was this tight section (1L would have hated it... ). 4-5 guys were just stopped waiting for some dude to squeeze in. I looked ahead and saw a line...and took it. One of the 5 guys went friggin nuts! One of DW's boys, actually. Some jackazz in a Bissel Jersey was just going off on how I'm an azzhole for "cutting" in line at a log-jam. Are you serious?? I thought it was a race?? After hearing how much of an a-hole I was for the eighth time, I stopped and got off my bike. I let the jerks that were crying go...then proceded to ride behind him and let all the riders that were about to pass him know that they'll get called an azz-hole if they pass this guy...so be careful. Don't know if you know this class act, DW, but he was a winner for sure.

So then I'm going down this nasty downhill and some single speed geek with a grizzly adams beard completely lowsides me, sending me down a drop-off into a fresh pine tree clear cut!! Of course, I landed on my freshly bruised ribs from the auto accident....along with some other misc off-road rash. I thanked him and told him good luck at his quest for his 800th place trophy!

Sooooo....I posted a pretty pitifull time for my first effort (2:24). I'll be training this winter to see if I can make up for it.

On a major plus side....my boy tore it up!! He started in the back of the pack and was a little timid...which was fine with me for a 6 yr old doing his first race/event of any kind. After the pack spread out and we got into some single track stuff...he started passing kids and calmly saying "on your right....on your left" as he was making his passes! Good stuff man. One proud daddy here. All the kids got big medals....you would have thought my boy just won the Olympics!

Weather was perfect. Many "die-hards" were disappointed that they couldn't bust their studded bicycle tires out and all their snow gear. Weird.

Hope you all had fun at the banquet. See you when you see me.

-Spore

Posted by: iroc8210---------------------

I checked out the start and ran into David from Kalkaska talking with another DRN'r that was racing (yea, I'm horrible with names, and everyone looks different in spandex). Apparently the KTM jacket gave me away. Manged to head into an area off Dockery Rd to spectate some of the tight stuff and a sweet little downhill section with some roots. Add a few lost water bottles to the trail and it made for a great spectating area complete with a few over the bar supermans. We did administer IB Profin to one unsuspecting flier (bruised ribs?) but of course he pushed on! Weather was awesome...congrats to everyone that raced. Hopefully I'll be joining you next year. Although, that will just mean there will be 3" of snow or 40 and rain I'm sure

Posted by: tdunn976---------------------

Good Job Mr. Spore,
You were misssed at the banquet ..But a proud Dad moment trumps the banquet everytime!

Yes I do. They are true roadies. They only supplement the mtb stuff into their training. You should have had a DW moment and peddled back to have knocked them off their bikes and taken their gel packs When I see them I'll heckle them about being big cry babies.

When George & I spin the road with them they run us right to the hills to prove a point

Monday/Tuesday before noon works for me on them lights. I'll call you tonight. Thx

Posted by: Ward---------------------

Just returned from Iceman weekend and you could not have asked for better weather. Sunny and 50-60 degrees. Rode Wolverine Thursday afternoon after the rain cleared out, Iceman Friday and Saturday and Iceman/MCCCT today. Bells Beer party was off the hook as usual and the finish line festivities were crazy. I cannot wait to go back next year. Might have to bring the toyhauler and stay at the campground. Saw Napper up there killin' it in the singlespeed class.

Posted by: Don Marsh---------------------

I know this is not a MTB site butt.....
Looking at the finishes in the paper the MTR & D-14 riders did very well!
Good Job!

Posted by: wyatt---------------------

Pretty sweet experience. Ran into iroc at the start.....yes the ktm jacket gave you away. I will deny I had "spandex" on. I prefer to call it Proper biking gear. (just what my friends need is more ammo) My first mtb race, living in Kasky always saw the hoopla thought those bikers were nuts
but was always intrigued by the whole thing. Some buddies roped me in and except for the first 10 minutes after the finish on a I am glad they did. Havent had a good azz kickin like that in a long time.

Posted by: Don Marsh---------------------

Great job Wyatt. I bet you looked real fast on your bike with your "proper riding gear" on. I took this photo at the start of Wyatt lookin "Fast in proper riding gear" (SPANDEX)

I thought spandex was slimming, I guess I was wrong.

Posted by: Rudydog---------------------

Thanks, I just threw-up in my mouth.

Damn Wyatt,
You must have been doing some "SERIOUS" carb loading after Trailfest for this event !! What the HELL do you fertilize them Taters with!!!!!

Dave L.

He goes up a few lbs. after the harvest.

Posted by: wyatt---------------------

I had no idea I was that big or had french sponsors..... it must have been the Burgers and jack daniels at trailfest.
Atkins is dead so im sure it wasnt the "always healthy and good for you michigan potatoes."

Pretty cool vid. The chopper flying overhead on the last note of the National Anthem was very cool!!

Freddy T: It's a mountain bike vid....you might not want to watch.

Great weather for the event.

The chopper flying over is no big deal if flys over all of the time. I think it is surveying Wyatts potato fields for fresh buds....cash crop.

Spicolli potatoes....got it!! I think they just use ultralights down here in Wayland? I see those darn things all the time...take-off/landing strip is a mile or two from my house. Not real sure what's in my neighbors back 40?

It was a big deal to me! And the fact that they timed it with the last note was pretty cool.

What color jersey did this guy have on? I know that dickweed Napper had on a black jersey. He is a single speed geek and has a big goofy beard and is really ugly as well. Also I heard he has a small pecker.

Some type of beer jersey....Bells?? Not sure. Green and black. Oh, and yeah, he had the full "Grizzly Adams" going. Chicks must just dig it. He was clearly faster than me, but it was a doggone stupid move in my book. He gained 3 ft and then had to stop.
