Wheel interchangability?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Do KDX250 and KX125 wheels fit on the KDX200?

Posted by: motopsycho87---------------------

the answer is, yes.

Thanks ebay!

That's news to me. Exactly what parts and years are you talking about?

Saying the wheels interchange implies you can swap all the wheel related parts, like hubs, spokes, sprockets, brake rotors, rims, tires, etc...

You, shall find out, what liars, connivers, and cheaters, actually there are, on evilbay. You MAY, have had better luck, a) Posting in the KDX forum. b) Going to any parts website, and SEE for yourself, if the axle is the same part number, the hub? And heaven forbid, that there is any year difference, in the parts you are trying to jury rig around. Typically, the older the bike, the smaller the axles, a trailbike, also, has smaller axles than an MX bike. Cobble, shim and pray it does not fall off, at the darnedest time? And be prepared, to spend more than fixing it correctly, in the first place. Been there, and done that, Bob

1989 KX125 wheels fit my KDX200SR (USD forks)

I got told before to check the axle number, why would I be so stupid as to do that?

The KDX has a speedo drive and the KX does not, the numbers will never be the same. Just check the bearings have the same internal diameter. Just make sure when you buy you get the spacers that come with, if not you may have to make / get them made, in which getting a hold of some steel and a couple drill bits is pretty easy.

Also, the rear arm had a different part number also, but rear wheel fits.

Mhm. forgot about that pesky invisible gear mechanism doohicky on the kdx axle that drives the ODO. doh!

You got a file, right? You can make it fit!

Posted by: motopsycho87---------------------

Didn't need a file 'senor trollsalot'. Fit perfectly using the KX spacers on the front, rear wheel required none. If you didn't have the kx spaces you could easily tap/press out the hardened steel center of the speedo drive to make it fit.

Good to know they fit. Could come in handy for someone else! What was the reason for the swap, and what year wheels did you use? From hybrid builds I know that some years will fit, and some won't.

And relax, i'm just messing with ya.

The SR has 19" rear wheel, strangely the 1989 KX125 has an 18" rear (or at least in this case). Now I have a set of wheels with road tyres on and a set with knobblies on :D!

Posted by: julien_d---------------------

I believe the 89 KX125 sported a 19" rear wheel. Perhaps someone had swapped it with an 18" from a KDX, or laced an 18" rim to it?

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------

Is an 80 KDX 175 worth riding, or in its museum appearance, one for the house?

Posted by: julien_d---------------------

My friend has a kdx175. I think it's worth riding. Pretty fun little bike, actually..

Yeah that's what I was thinking! All the better for me though, 18" tyres are WAY cheaper!

Did some research and turns out the bearings had already been replaced to fit 15mm spindle, how peculiar!!

Also, just for JulienD

2 angle squish 1st stage 10 degrees second stage 15

Cylinder head I re-profiled for a friend according to a rather popular tuning guide. I've noticed on RB's heads he leaves the transition from squish to combustion chamber sharp, although it looks good, sharp edges = worse flow = less material = hot spots = easier pre-ignition + wear, which once again, read most tuning guides and this is seen as correct, seems strange how all these 'godlike' tuners disregard facts like this.

ARGUE AWAY!!!

(and yes I did measure the piston / squish clearence, the buyer in question requested low compression)

Nice work motopsycho!

Posted by: motopsycho87---------------------

The squish is 10 degress, into 15 degrees then into combustion chamber, and thanks :D that thing was destroyed before i got it, really should have taken a before pic
