***Breezy Hill Enduro??***

Anyone going to the Breezy Hill enduro in LA?

Posted by: justql---------------------

My wrist is still not back to normal from last year down there. No really it was a good race, I just made a mistake. I will probably not be going since we are putting on the Golden Eagle, the week before and it's a twelve hour drive. I figure my wife would throw a fit since I am spending all of the weekend before at a race and made her drive home (got home at 3:00am) since I had a broke wrist.
If we get 200 riders at ours I'll go (my club won't kill me if we get that many)
Have fun

Posted by: lawman---------------------

well, based on jim cook's promise of balmy temperatures, cool breezes & no dust, i'm going.

Posted by: P. Pinestraw---------------------

for sure. I plan on jogging 7-8 miles a week to train for the heat & humidity. I am currently lifting weights & using the sauna & steam bath to get a start. I have been doing this since June & I found it REALLY helps with hot races, but it also gave me an advantage at 12,000 ft. @ the Colo. natnl. enduro.

Posted by: CNM---------------------

I'll be there Sat. afternoon. I'll most likely do the late row thing again. It's worked so far this year so why change. Keep our fingers crossed for a cool front to pass through. 95+ is torture!

Posted by: P. Pinestraw---------------------

Hill, the better! Key time is 8:01 I believe. That is nearly the coolest time of the day. Those who start on rows 40+ will have an extra hour of mid-day heat to reckon with. I preregistered about 4 months ago, so I expect to be inside row 10. I can't wait--the bike is dialed in perfectly too ! Goody, goody!

Posted by: TexXR---------------------

I'll be there. I'm on row 5. Looking forward to it. I rode it last year...wasn't too bad...just some spots of dust. I think I'm going through some kind of withdrawal sickness not having an enduro to ride every other weekend. I'm ready to ride!!!

Posted by: KDXfile---------------------

I'll be coming over along with Lemming to ride on row 32.
It's our first trip to Breezy Hill; what's the terrain like?
Is it similar to Fort Polk?

Posted by: KLeeneX300---------------------

I'll be there about miday on sat. Hopefully I'll get an early row

Posted by: Timr---------------------

'File, (Mark)

I rode it last year and 5 years ago. Last year's course was much tighter than the one 5 years ago. It shouldn't be too hard for you guys the REALLY tight stuff came after the short course cut-off. Terrain and soil wise, it's very similar to Ft. Polk and Forest Hill.

I'll be in Calgary Canada for a family wedding so I won't be making this race.

BTW, Mark, Do you know where Lemming is? I thought that I would see you guys down at Clanton this past Sunday. We were down there cutting trail for our Enduro in Oct.

See ya.

Posted by: Timr---------------------

CNM,

Are you going to ride the KDX at this race?
Good luck!

Posted by: CNM---------------------

Tim,

No, I'm going to stick with the XR for the ramaining of the races. I've thought about maybe bringing the KDX to Wiggins but I'm not sure. I've ridden it from time to time but never in a race situation. Besides, it still needs a top end. Guess I better get busy on that. :silly: It looks like if I want the bike running again, I've got to do it myself.

I was on the last row (75) last year at this race and the heat was pretty bad. I really didn't notice until I finished the race and went back to the truck. That's when the nausea, dizziness, and tunnel vision started. I may have to re-think my row selection this year. :think

Posted by: KDXfile---------------------

Tim,
Lemming is on vacation somewhere in Colorado. He'll be back by this weekend I think. I couldn't come down to Clanton because my wife was out of town and kid duty. Can't wait to ride the new stuff; those old trails are getting pretty worn out.

Posted by: Timr---------------------

Mark,

We've cut a bunch of re-routes around the rutted up stuff. Also, we've cut a bunch of the briar bushes and vines out of the way. We worked on the first 9 miles of the course this past weekend. This is on the Petty Farm/Barn/Powerline side of the road. The stuff that we usually ride second when we're trailriding down there.

I think you'll like the conditions of the trails. The Porter Clan is working on the creek side trails.

Posted by: gasgasman---------------------

I pre-entered for row around row 10.

Terry Cunningham will be hosting a riding school for kids on Sat. from 12 to 3pm. Info posted at www.smackovermotorsports.com Go to "talking smack" then to "race headquarters".

See you all there.

Posted by: Jon K.---------------------

Will there be any "phantom" checkpoints this year?

Posted by: Timr---------------------

What was the deal with the "phantom" check? I rode this race last year, and I remember there being some kind of comotion about something. Then, the next thing I know, Kevin Hutchinson is apologizing to everyone for something. What happened??

Posted by: MARK IT---------------------

The Bogalusa LA. gang will be there. row 02 as usual. This will be the HOT
one!!

Posted by: Jon K.---------------------

Tim, I was hoping that someone would "bite" and discuss the "phantom check" a little bit. Either no-one is listening, no-one knows, or no-one cares! I have Kevins' side of the story "We wuz wronged!" I would like to hear the other side.

Posted by: BCooper---------------------

I'll be there ready to go. Hopefully, it will be around 98 degrees with a heat index of around 110. I just hope it's not dusty!!!!!

What's the deal with the "phantom check"? Let's hear "the rest of the story"

Coop

Posted by: BCooper---------------------

The dust may not be an issue since Tropical Storm Barry is in the gulf and could strengthen to hurricane status. This TS could prove to be a blessing with a good watering down of the course ; but then again, it could also dump a ton of rain and cause a cancellation of the event.
We shall wait and see!!! Just take it easy on the rain dances!!!!

Posted by: Timr---------------------

wfo,

What I posted in my previous post is "literally" all that I know about the story. I think that the check in question was the one with the camoflague tarp. I remember going through that check. I remember a check being thrown out for scoring. We left early for the long drive back to Birmingham.

Then, there was something going around the SERA e-mail distribution list, but I wasn't able to follow what was going on.

Was the check in the wrong place? Was the check not supposed to be there at all? I don't get it. Any info about the incident would be good.

Posted by: lawman---------------------

you WANT 98 degrees, bcooper? you are not a well man!

i wasn't at the enduro & don't know the people, but i read all of the emails last year. looked to me like a "who's the boss" dispute about what checks there would be. it sure got heated/involved/extended; this is supposed to be fun, right?

Posted by: Jon K.---------------------

Tim; the best I can tell is the check was placed against the wishes of the club referee. So the club threw out the check along with the offending members. Held back some bonus points. I hear that they were to be drawn and quartered, but couldn't get an executioner.
All of that is fine in my book with the exception of throwing out a perfectly good check. That kind of sticks in my throat. I am loath to throw out a check. Ask around Birmingham!
Anyway, I was hoping to hear a little discussion about the famous "phantom check"!!
Lawman; how do you get all the Emails? Is there a SERA webring or group or something?

Posted by: lawman---------------------

yeah, wfo, there's an egroup. try seramembers@yahoogroups.com. if you have any trouble finding it, post back & i'll see if i can help you out.

Posted by: Jon K.---------------------

Lawman; got it! Thanx a bunch. Should make for some interesting reading!
By and large, the promotors of enduros are retired (or still active) competitors and, predictably, things get heated/involved/extended. Just what you would expect from a bunch of old warriors.
Also take into account that the typical enduro referees' brain has stopped working sometime mid-day on Saturday before the event! I know mine does! Overloaded circuits or something! Seems to get worse with age.

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

Looks like I'm going to make this one. I'll be pulling in on Sunday morning in time to jump on row 32, then it's a quick dash back to B'ham.

Anyone know if they are getting any rain down there?

Posted by: Timr---------------------

WOW!!!:scream:
The Lemming lives!

Where have you been hiding? I won't make it to this race. I've got to go to Canada for a family thing.

What are your plans for Dirtweek?

The rumors of his death have been greatly exaggerated.
Will there be a "Bubba" caravan? Are you guys doing 3 days or 2? I'm thinking that a Thursday arrival would be cool.

Posted by: curlyma---------------------

...on the verge of lunacy! I've been given the job of "tent boss". If any of you see me going ballastic, please slap me to straighten me out. Right now I'm in high gear taking care of the last minute details.

We're working hard to put on a challenging yet fun event. (I know, I've chopped some of the "Super Woods" and other trail myself):scream:

And please, no inquiries about the "phantom check" from me on this board; it just isn't the place for it. The matter was taken up and settled last November before the SERA council. All I can say is there are 2 sides to every story, and it's sad it had to happen in the first place.

Anyway, look forward to seeing all of you there!

Posted by: MARK IT---------------------

Angie, are ya'll getting any rain there? how much new trail is there?
We'll be in for the kid's race sat. and where on row #2 in the morning.
Remember this is fun now, I'm working with the Masterlink team In
wiggens and it's gruelling i'm telling ya.

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

Yes Timr, JP, and Truespode, I am alive and well. Couple too much administrative activity at work along with a well deserved vacation and that explains my long absence (i'm touched that you even noticed!). However, this is not the forum for such trivial matters:scream: Timr - give me a call at work tomorrow, I can't find your new phone number.

I put on a new S12 tonight and am ready for this race. I hope they've been getting some rain, at least enough to settle the dust for Sunday. Any chance the club is going to post the route sheet on the SERA website?

Mark IT - have they set a date for Masterlinks yet (and please tell me that it is NOT going to be October 7th).

Posted by: Josh Cook---------------------

Hey Lawman,
Tell Jerry C. he owes me a 12 pack of Diet cokes
He should know what I'm talking about.. I'll be at Breezy around lunch Sat.
I'm also on row 21 for Sun... Looking forward to a great ride:confused:

Posted by: curlyma---------------------

Hey MARK IT -

We've had some rain, but there's no standing water. A little rain to beat down the dust would make for perfect conditions. There's no new trail to speak of this year.

Posted by: lawman---------------------

hey josh, i'll tell him but you are on your own collecting it! we'll be getting there early afternoon sat, if all goes well (not very likely with our crew). i'm looking forward to seeing everyone again after the summer break!

Posted by: MARK IT---------------------

Lemmig, No that date is not correct.

Posted by: CNM---------------------

Anyone know how many races we have to have this year before we can drop one? I know last year it was 8 (due to some cancellations) and the year before it was 9.

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

CNM,

I believe that the SERA rule books states that you count 70% of the races (rounded up if not a whole number). There were 13 races scheduled for this year. However the Texarkana endruo was postponed and I doubt it will be rescheduled at this late date, leaving 12 races. 70% of 12 is 8.4, which should be rounded to 9 by SERA rules (not by mathematical rounding). If Masterlinks is cancelled that leaves 11 races, 70% of that is 7.7 and rounding gives 8.

Posted by: CNM---------------------

Thanks Lemming! See you Sunday!

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

Will the gas stop be near the parking area? Yea, I know, I ask this everytime.

Posted by: MARK IT---------------------

Lemming, The gas available is, but I'm not sure about the main gas.
Hey dont say anything about our race being canceled, where working to hard
for that. I have to pass on the Rockford race due to them moving it to a
preobligated weekend, so I know how it is.

Posted by: Lemming---------------------

They have posted the route sheet on the SERA site. From what I can calculate the short course is less than 40 miles and the gas stop is at 16 (taking into account the resets). Is this race really that short?
