I am looking to ditch my headlight for hare/scramble races....which number plate will work best....I have been told the CR500 plate works well. Any other ideas?

What, you don't believe the guy that told you about the CR500 plate? I'm sure there are several other plates that will fit, but I saw the CR500 plate on an XR400 first hand and it was sweet. The bottom of the plate clears the little radiator perfectly so air can still flow through. I'm sure with enough zip-ties you can get any plate to work. I've had a '99 Yamaha 250 front plate on my '95 KLX 250 before...but you already knew that. See ya!

I have used a 96-98 RM 125/250 front #plate on 4 XR250/400's and it mounts/looks great! It also covers the front forks and look strick too! I have pics on my site of my MX'ed XR400 http://mx393.tripod.com
