My son's first race...

I gotta brag a bit. His KX125 wasnt running well, top end was gone and it was making no power, but he raced anyway. He had the reaction time off the line and jumped ahead of the others (12 man field) but then they walked away from him. He kept at it, clearing all the jumps and braking deeper and deeper. He moved up to 11th and was pressuring the 10th place guy. Passed him in turns a couple of times but lost it in the straights. At one point he passed 2 guys in a corner. He ended up in 11th in the 1st moto, but his bike died and wouldnt restart at the 2nd moto.
This forced him to really run deep in the turns, a skill that he needed to improve on. he now knows how to run deep. As he puts it "I stay on the gas till I'm about to pee my pants, then I brake"
He tore the top end down (he's learning how to do it) and the piston and cyl looked great, and were to spec. but the ring was so worn, that it had little tension and an end gap of .125, I cant believe it ran at all.
Oh well, He will have it back together for this weekend and next race is in a couple off weeks.
I think he did great!! Good Job Son.

Thats's great! We have a boy on the way due, Christmas eve this year, and can't wait to see his first race!! Sounds like you guys have a lot of fun ahead of you trying to improve on an already sucessful start to racing. Good luck in the future!!

First races always give you something to remember. The night before my son's first race we were riding trails out of state. Didn't get home till 11pm. We got up a little late and just got there in time. Then we noticed we didn't have any gas left. One of his buddies let us buy some and we thought we'd be ok. Then his bike started loading up at the gate, it never did before. He cleared it out just in time to make the start. He got a great start and was in the top 4 (out of 19) into the first turn when one of the outside riders rode right across the front of his bike and down he went. He picked it back up and finished 11th. He was a little gun shy the 2nd moto and finished 9th. What a first race day!
