Dual Sport Tire question

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: One Dollar---------------------

I was planning on dual sporting my KLX so I can putz around town looking for those elusive dirt riding areas. I was looking at a Pirelli MT-21 Rally Cross

It's DOT approved 90% off/10% on which is about what my road/dirt time will be.

Any other suggestions?

Well after some research I answered my own question. I'm going to go with a
Michilin Enduro comp III for the front and a
Kenda Trakmaster II for the rear.

I can't believe they are DOT approved, they look like dirt only knobbies in the pics

I ride in soft stuff mainly and from what I read this is agreat combo for mostly dirt riding in soft terrain.

I tried that tire and was disappointed with rapid wear. I prefer the Dunlop 606, which is discussed -- with a link -- under the product review section.

I've tried several DOT tires and have been happy with Dunlops 905 and the Pirelli MT44 for the front. So far the Kenda Trackmaster II is the only back that can give me the traction I need even though it wears out moderatley. I've used them in National Dual Sports , Enduros and Hare Scrambles in the east. Didn't care for the Bridgestones or Metzlers. The 606 has rather large knobs so I stay away from this tire.

Tree Crippler (love the name ) how was the Kenda in soft sandy terrain? I will be using it mostly in dirt (90% dirt 10% road, maybe even 95/5). I only ride about 500-600 miles a year and like the low cost and tread design of the Kendas. Do you think the Kenda Trackmaster II front tire good for my use? You can pick up a set for $100, so wear is not really a concern.

The Kenda has the tallest knobs of any DOT rear which helps in soft terrain. There are better front tires than the Kenda but they cost $20+ dollars more. If your only riding 500 miles a year the Kendas should work fine.

Well just great Aparently Florida won't plate any bike with a VIN that indicates off- road use. There is no inspection, DMV said get the manufacturer to issue a new VIn that indicates Street legal use and they will do it.

Called Kawasaki and they said that is not possible, they do not re-issue VIN numbers.

And I thought California was strict.:think

Don't give up just yet. I'll bet there are plenty of guys in Florida with street plates on offroad bikes, just like here in the People's Republic of CA. Find some dual sport riders in your area and ask how they got their plates.

Baja Designs and some of the other dual sport companies make kits that are reportedly 50 state legal. I'd give them a call and ask if there are any problems in Florida.

Spoke with Baja designs and they said they have never dealt with Florida but....

he faxed me instructions that basically show you how to (by mail) get a plate from Vermont. then all I have to do is transfer the plate to get a Fla. plate

I won't even have to put a kit on unless I get pulled over and the cop asks where are my blinkers or horn (my next door neigbor is a city cop, I'll have to pick his brain on this one). I plan on using it mainly for forestry roads where licenced vehicles can only go and for runs around town going to riding areas.

gotta make a call to the Vermont DMV now... woohoo!

How about sharing that phone #,I want to do the same with one of my bikes

Dual Sport Licensing Process for Vermont
Phone Number for Vermont DMV (802) 828-2000

Call number and ask to be sent a Vermont " Registration, tax & title" form

1st order MSO (Manufacturers statement of Origin) from dealer

2nd Obtain Vermont paperwork

3rd make copy of motorcycle sales reciept showing sales taxe was paid in
your state (if vehicle was purchased new). If vehicle was purchased used,
ou will have to pay Vermont sales tax.

4th get insurance for Mortorcycle

5th Have DMV representative, police officer, or state patrol officer notorize
the verification of vehicle identification number (section 7) of the Vermont
registration form.

6th Send above paperwork and a check for fees to Vermont DMV to get plate.

I called and talked to a women at DMV and she said insurance and notorization
was not required. You might want to call also just to double check.
They figure the tax by blue book value if you do not have a bill of sale.

also look here: http://www.fourstrokesonly.com/VT.html
they pretty much confirm the process

Good Luck! and wish me Luck too!

When I checked with VT a year or so ago there was a different process depending on whether the bike was more or less than 300cc. The KLX is slighlty less than 300cc. It was possible to get the plate either way, but different paper work - sorry; can't remember the specific details. Just make sure you specify over or under 300cc when you call.

I have a 200exc that I am trying to get a street legal title and plates for. Everyone I talk to gives me a different story. I jumped through all of the hoops that the state police ,local police and the local drivers license bureau told me about, but the next time I went to the DLB I talked to a different person and they changed the rules on me. Now they say that my bike has to have an odometer reading to get a street title and it has to be inspected. Apparently Vermont won't title bikes under 300cc. Any advice for the state of Illinois?

Thanks,
Neal

I talked to several dealers in New York and they told me 1/1/2000 no more off road convertions at all no matter what is done to it. New York is the first I guess. Heres how they beat it buy in Ohio and convert it there...register it there. and transfer it to New York...wheres there theres a way...
