Where to get dry ice?

Where can I get dry ice? I would like to try to remove the small dent in the side of my pipe, but I don't know where to get the dry ice from. Anyone know?

believe it or not, some grocery stores may have dry ice.

If your local grocery stores do not have dry ice go to a gas or welding supply company that sells CO2. To make dry ice all they do is hook up an attachment to a siphon bottle containing CO2 and make the dry ice on the spot. I know my local Albertsons has dry ice.

Could you please tell me how to "un-dent" your pipe with dry ice? I would really like to know, Ive never heard of that before:think

You cap both ends and the as the dry ice turns to gas and the pressure builds it pops the dent out.

That's not the way I heard. I heard that when your pipe is hot after riding, you stick the dry ice right on the dent and the metal contracts, popping out the dent.

BuzzBomb- If you are anywhere near Harrisburg PA a company called Good Time Ice sells it, they are close to downtown. I have never seen it in the Giant's or Weis' of the world but I never looked that closely for it. FYI - I think it was about $1/lb.

which way is better or do both methods give the same results? The way Buzz Bomb describes sounds easier. I have a few dents but I dont want to spend 30$ getting it repaired, so I wanna do it myself.

i have fixed the pipe on my bike twice now but filling it all the way up with water and than putting a cork in both ends and sticking it in the freezer, however i did this when i got a big dent in the side of my pipe, i wouldn't sug. trien it with small dings becaues it would probably crack the pipe open, i hanvt had any prob. except when i popped the dent out the second time i got a little crack the size of a toothpic about 1 cm long but that wasn't anything a little jb weld couldnt fix

My buddy used to fix dented pipes for extra money in college. He plugged both ends and pumped about 30 psi of inert gas into the pipe and evenly heated the dent until it was cherry hot and the dent would come back out and he would then place a wet paper towel over the ex-dent to heat shrink the metal back to normal. I would caution you about over pressurizing the pipe as the vapor pressure of CO2 is 831 psi @ 68 degrees F and one gram of liquid carbon dioxide yields 30.5 in3 of gas @ 68 degrees F. I would suggest installing a safety blow off valve or your pipe could become a pipe bomb. The ice method can split seams. At 23 degrees F if water is fully contained it can generate 8000 psi of hydraulic force as the last remnants of water freezes. As the pressure builds the freezing point of water decreases. If the force can be contained at -6 degrees F the hydraulic pressure reaches 28,000 psi. Powerful stuff.

My theroy is only in passing with no actual experiences to speak of. I would maybe recomend on of the othermethods suggested first but I do believe mine does work.

:think --one hell of a strong cap! Hmmm...capable of withstanding expansion pressures strong enough that when equally applied to all exposed surfaces, results in specific reversal of a large-walled/nonspecifically located "dent" rather than popping the 'ol cork out. Where can I get these?
KXaggerator--your thinking is very impressive, and I believe correct. Any metal fabricators out there?

I have used dry ice to remove small dings. You really don't even need the pipe to be hot since the dry ice is soo cold. This is a trick that is used to remove ding on cars and seems to be equally useful on expansion chambers. You MAY be able to do it with regular ice but it will take more time and might need to warm the bike up to get it to "pop".

I like to fix things my self. I echo KX's comments about capping the end and using dry ice to pressurize the pipe. Very dangerous. If the dent is small enough that you can pop it out by rubbing dry ice on the dent to shrink the metal, the dent may not be costing you any horse power (unless its at the head pipe.) Tell you the truth, I send mine to Pacific Crest Pipe Repair. For $40 plus shipping your pipe is fixed plus they put in the correct bends since most of the times I dent a pipe the pipe also bends so you have a hard time getting it off the bike.
