Great day, dubious begining

Hows this for a race day. My eldest daughter got married last
weekend, with the fun ( yeah right ) starting last Thurs. with the
whole rehersal dinner thing, got to bed approx. 1:30am. Up fri.
morning about 5:30 and attended to wedding stuff all day, to bed
half drunk approx. 2:30am. Up Sat. morning 6:00am and off to
decorate and set up reception hall all morning into early afternoon.
Attend wedding, go to reception, got slightly buzzed, cleaned up
reception hall, bed about 1:30am. Sunday is race day(at least I
loaded the trailer in advance) got up late and didnt feel too well,
and if it wasnt for the fact that I am currently barely leading my
class (45-55 ) I probably would have gone back to bed. Anyway
my son and I drug ourselves out of the house and headed for
Carbondale Ks. via I 70, running real late. The new Kansas
NASCAR speedway is on the way and we got way slowed by that
traffic and then took a wrong turn in Topeka, which means we
did'nt get to the track untill 11:30 am. I sent the boy to the riders
meeting while I got ready, and barely had time to warm the bike up
on the way to the start line. On the way, my front brake lever pin
came loose, so I hauled back to the truck for my trusty bag of nuts
and bolts for a quick fix. They were still at home so my son's CR
became a donor( he wasnt racing ). Made it to the line with
seconds to spare, no practice and a crappy hangover. By the
way , this is a 2 hour hare scramble. 8 guys in my wave, dead
engine start. Flag drops, bike takes 3 kicks and I'm last off the line.
So I put my head down , determined to ride within myself, and play
it safe, but fast as I can go without crashing safe. I start passing
some guys in my class, drinking my 50/50 (gatoraid & water) and
pretty soon I see the leader of my class as I go thru the barrels on
the 3rd lap. By now I'm in a rythem, and have largely forgotten all
my pre race woes, seeing him I smell blood and put my head down.
after a bit I catch up and just barely get by him, and the race is
on. unfortunatly, I've drug my rear brake too much and must have
boiled the fluid, so now its front brakes only, and you know how
that goes, plus me determined not to touch the back brake so
maybe I'll get them back. My rival makes a pss on a steep downhill
and while I'm right on his butt, I can't get by and he steadily pulls
away. I come thru the barrels, white flags out, hes in sight but a
pretty good ways in front, but my back brakes back and I start
charging. pretty soon I don't even see his dust and I know he's
going faster and I'm at my limit. About 3 miles from the end, I come
around a corner and theres Jim, desperately tugging his bike out
of the trees! Man now I ride for all I'm worth wanting to put some
ground between us before he gets going again. I hit the checkered
3 mins ahead and take the class win! That my freinds was the best
race I've ever had, and it started out so bad. So never give up,
sometimes the racing gods will smile on you!
