Four Stroke Tires?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just heard that Dunlop has a D739 tire, (FAJ-Front, and G-Rear) that are supposed to be made for fourstroke bikes. Now Ive heard alot of crap in my life, but are they for real?
These are a "different" tire than those sold on the stock Yammies.
"designed to handle the unique power characteristics of off-road four stroke machines. Stiffer sidewalls, etc, etc."

Those "special" 739's should be what came on your stock WR or YZ. That's what mine rolled off of the showroom floor with..they are a decent hard pack to intermediate tire but that's about it. I run a 756 front w/695 rear..good cross-over set up for moist to dry conditions.

BT-
I hear different things about the 756. I want to try one, cause I really dont have much confidence in my stock 739 front.

Mine came with the 739FA or FAJ front and the 739G rear as well. The front works best on hard pack and is very durable. Traction in loose dirt and sand is not very good. The rear is about the same. It is pretty durable. I have 756 on the rear now and it definitely has better traction over a wide range of terrain, but it has not proven quite as durable as the 739 it replaced. One tradeoff I guess. As far as the four stroke specific tires, I'm not sure if a difference could be felt. They may have slightly stiffer sidewalls but it's probably more marketing than function.

755 all the way(for woods use) Sticks like glue in nearly everything.

I'm going 755 or Michelin S12 for my next front. I like the 756 front but it wears out fast, but does hook the front end in wet stuff really well! The 756 on the rear seemed to kick out too easily. Power sliding is much smoother w/the 695 on back and will allow the bike to lean very nicely..after the edges were gone on my rear 756 it just seemed to slip out too much. It's gonna be getting wet around here soon, so maybe even an S12 on back!

I think I'm gonna take my stock 739's to Chadwick once and just thrash'em. Then slap the S12's on!! Maybe check out the 755 for the front, as the S12 front is REAL spikey, awesome in sand & mud, a LITTLE loose on the hard stuff, but not a bad all-round tire at all. Cool feeling being able to steer out of a slick rut where most tires would just slip.
After our ride the other day you should change your signature line to "....the sound of THREE 426's in the woods"!
Now, get back to work and stop playing on the internet!!

Many of our trails are a little sandy, but the track is hard pack. Is the 755 a good "all-around" tire?

Hey,
I'm in NW Florida with lot's of sand, and it also gets quite muddy in some areas that I ride. My XR400 has Michelin M12's front and rear, and I'm very pleased with them in the sand/mud, and definitely in grassy/harder areas. They are wearing excellent, even with a couple miles of pavement on the way to, and back from my local riding area. I've heard excellent remarks about the S12's and all the Michelins in general. I'll be using Michelins again when it comes time for new rubber. Good luck.

The 755 is an excellent sand tire and a decent hardpack tire. With that said there aren't any tires I know of that are great at both.
I'm talking the 755 front tire. I think the 756 rear is better.
KEEP IN MIND: The 755 has been discontinued. Get it while you can.

I typically run 756's on the front and rear of my 400.
I never notice any hook-up problems with the rear tire in a variety of conditions from loose and muddy, to hard and blue-groove.
The front is a different story. Very good in loose, muddy to intemediate soil. Once you get to hardpack though, it is like there are ball bearings between your tire and the ground. Very easy to break it loose.
The 756 does wear out pretty quick, but it is the best tire for around here.
I have never tried the 755, although I head it is almost the same as the 756.

Snaggle XR4 where in NW Florida are you located. I will be moving to Santa Rosa Beach Florida early next year nd was wondering if you have any input on the local tracks there "County Line MX Park" Oak Grove MX park" and the one out in Milton near Pensacola. If you have any info please e mail me at spt23dc@aol.com

Spt23dc,
I'm not a MX'r and have never visited any of the tracks you mentioned. However, the track at Milton is very close, I live in Pensacola. One of my riding buddies used to go and race beginner type races at Milton, but we got him into riding more woods with my other friend and I. I'm not familiar with the terrain of the tracks, but obviously all the natural terrain is soft sand/medium pack grassy sand.

I'm running Michelin MH2s front and rear at 12 psi on my 520 SX. They hook up great for int to hard terrain.

Bridgestone M39 front M40 rear at least in Ohio. Trelleborg Ten Master rear if you can find one. The M57F/M58R are good in the summer when it is dry. They all wear good, even on a 2 stroke. Of course this is my opinion and $$$$ being spent.

The 'G' is supposed to denote a tire with a stiffer sidewall. This holds up better to the different sideloading a fourstroke produces because of it's tractability. Go with the 756 it is a much better all around tire. I use my 739's as rim protectors for practice.

The 756 is the choice for are area. Another good rear is the IRC M5B. Since I try to keep mine 100% street legal I go with the Pirelli MT44 on front and the Kenda Trackmaster II ( A Dunlop755 copy) on back.

Tree-
Thats exactly what I decided to do. Im looking for the best mail order price on one of those dogs, so if you or anyone has a good-cheap- mail order depot, let me know!

For what its worth, I went around the block with tires on my Four Stroke. That thing rips them up. And I'M NOT ALL THAT FAST!!! I can't imagin a fast guy on those things! I found a compromize from a surprising source. The best Traction-Tire life mix I have seen are from those Pirelli MT32's. I started with them...and after four other popular rear tires and 2 fronts....I'm back to them. They wear very well and have reasonable bite. Since I'm a casual rider wear is a higher priority than pure performance.
Thats my 1/2 cent.
