I am about to get back into riding after a number of years away from the sport. My 10 year old son wants to learn and I'm egar to teach him. I have been looking at the Yamaha TTR 125 for him and 225 for me but I some input. The 125 seems right for him but I'm concerned about the 225. Everything I read says it is a good bike for the beginner. I may be out of practice but I'm not exactly a beginner. The most apealing part of the 225 is the price. What other bikes are out there that compair Price and Power.

I wouldn't recommend the 225. It's overweight and poor handling. Just look in the cycle trader and you'll find lots of "Like New" ones for sale. Wonder why! A TTR250 would be a better choice. A good used late model XR250 or DRZ400 is also a good option. The TTR250 and DRZ would have the magic button, a great feature you will appreciate many times over. Even a good used Suzuki DR200 would be a better choice than a TTR225. Good luck with what ever you choose and don't be afraid to ask questions here. I'm 13, and when i went to get my bike, I sat on a TTR 125 out of pure curiosity, and it felt a little too heavy. I could definitly ride it, but I feel that I would have more control on a bike like mine (my opinion).

I definitely do NOT recommend the TTR225. I had one last year and it was WAY too heavy and underpowered. In addition, it only has a front disc brake and a drum rear brake. The suspension was not very good either.
A friend of mine has the TTR250 and I have ridden that. While still a heavy bike, it is much better than its counterpart the 225. It has both disc brakes, better suspension and of course, the e-button. For learning, this machine is quite forgiving and a fun bike to ride. I would stick with that.
Also, as Howard mentioned, the DRZ250 is also a good choice as is the XR250. They are all about the same bike, but the XR does not have the e-button and is about 20 pounds lighter.

Thanks for all the input. I think I'll look at the XR bikes. Any input on the TTR 125 vs XR100??
