New Bike Break In

I just got my CRF450 today. The guy at the dealer recommended me not using synthetic oil in it. I understand not using it for the break in period, but I would like to use it afterwards.
Anyone have any input? Also the valvetrain is quite noisy.. does this go away after the engine's worn in ?

Hey,
I believe I've heard people mention that the head got quieter after you put in some hours on the bike. I would be real easy on her for as long as you can stand it. Let her warm up very good before you ride, don't ride at a constant speed for long, and don't ream her out. I would try to get at least a tank of gas through her before you get excited.
You should be good with synthetic after break in, make sure and keep the motor and tranny oil changed very frequently during and right after break in. Keep the airfilter very clean too. Excessiveness during break in will pay off greatly in the future reliability, and performance of you motor. Good luck, and enjoy the bad*ss bike! I'm so jealous.

I too have heard not to use synthetics, especially during break in. Something about not allowing things to break in properly. Once broken in, it seems to become more of an emotional issue with people and you'll find many threads about it on this site.
With the 450f having separate oils for separate functions, many of the synthetic issues may not apply (too slippery for clutch, etc). I'd use what Honda recommends for now, and see what develops as more people put time on the bike.

p.s. as for the noise, my klx too makes lots of noise. all those parts and lightweight makes for lots of sound. try to listen to another 450f, and you should find it similarly loud. if not, you may have some issues, but they're probably the same

The bike is really great.. so much power and so easy to control... comes on smooth, its there when you need it. The bike is an excellent jumper.. Honda really did a nice job on the bike. Starting is easy.
The manual recommends 15 hours of wear in time. I didnt take it as easy as I should have the first day, but I coud'nt help myself. I am going to change the oil filter and put in AMSOIL Race series 2000 synthetic. Any ideas about proper weight to use? Where can I get an oil filter.. are they available yet?

I have to look.. I noticed quite a few typo's in the manual too, but the pics are nice and its overall a good book.
Where do I get the valve shims for adjustment.. I'm real scared about the whole thing. My dealer has the oil filters but no shims...

about the 450F, but if it is a shim system, the tolerances should be close to spec for quite a while. At least compared to a rocker arm system of the XR's?
Good to check, for sure, but you probably won't need the shims, hopefully.
I would LOVE to get a test ride on a 450F! CHeers.

It does have a rocker arm assembly, and the stupid part about it is you have to remove the whole rocker arm, cam sprocket and camshaft assembly to get to the darn shims. If they had clearance and a valve depresser tool this would be much easier and I'd attempt it myself. Theres MUCH margin for error on this valve adjustment. Its darn noisy too. I am gonna take it for another ride, then change the oil and take it somewhere to get the valve adjustment taken care of.
Thanks for the input.
