WR 250F Broken cranckshaft...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So it happened ...strange sound ..stopped immediately but the damage was done ..
My dealer opened the engine and found out that the crankshaft (is this the correct English word ?; was broken in 2 ..?!!
Yamaha Europe said Well .... it did never happened before and so on ...finally they agreed to "give" me the parts and that I have to pay the labour...
I got my bike fixed and went to ride but I did have a fear ..what if the new part is suffering also from the same original problem ????
I went back to my dealer and made a deal with him ..he took my WR 01 like a deposit and I will wait for the 02....
Last week a friend of mine got the SAME problem !!!!
I really liked my bike and do hope that this "problem" is fixed now.
For your info my 01 was number 00426….. ;;;;; I do believe one among the first ones.

do a search on here and www.thumpertalk.com
i think this is a common problem with the wr250

Rako, sorry to hear about the problem. I had the very same problem with mine. Here's the commentary:

Did you have some other problem later or on ?
Yamaha Belgium just gave me the part (crankshaft) but did not "took" the labor ...?!

i have the same fear of my WR250f snapping its crank as well. Im seriously considering selling the bike, but i have no interest in anything else at the moment. Im waiting for the new KTM250f's and their competition to arrive, but im worried ill snap the crank before then. Yamaha must know there is a fault with the crank, and am surprised that there isn't some sort of recall. Obviously its expensive, but wouldn't a crank snapping at high RPM cause other damage to the bottom end? I think ill be leaving team Blue at the start of next year. So much for the best four stroke MXer ever built!

All of the crank failures that I have read about have been WRF’s. Has anyone heard of a YZF crank failure? What could possibly be different between the two bikes with regard to the potential for crankshaft failure?

Posted by: BadgerMan---------------------

Hopefully, the failures are confined to a specific lot of crankshafts and the failures are not an indication of a design deficiency. That would mean that only a specific group of VIN numbers would be affected such as the tail end of the YZF production run and the beginning of the WRF run. It would be interesting to see all the VIN numbers from the bikes that have had failures to see if they are grouped together or not.

my WR is frame no. is 1305. Does anyone think im screwed?

Posted by: BadgerMan---------------------

I would be nice to see numbers from other bikes that have had failures.

My YZ250F is numbered in the 1210’s. I have had no problems whatsoever.

Fully agree with your idea to collect the failed bikes numbers !!!
(on the top that will help me a lot for my negotiations with Yam)

It would help to do a separate post entitled something like "YZF/WRF Broken Crankshaft Survey" and request owners to post the following info:

- YZF or WRF
- Crank trouble, yes or no
- Repeat crank trouble, yes or no
- An approximation of their VIN, 1210's, 1220's, 1230's, etc.

I would post on the Thumpertalk YZ250F/WR250F page as well.

If you get a good response you should be able to tell if the problem was isolated to a specific group of bikes or if it affects the entire production run of both models. It will also be interesting to see if anyone has had repeat problems.

Yes BadgerMan that is a good idea..
My English being poor...may I ask you to do it ???

Thank you

I just got done tearing down a yz250f with a broken crank. The pin broke near the ignition lobe and due to the shape of the fracture the bike was still running! (just sounded awful). Anyway after a real PITA at the dealer where they wanted the entire bike to look at, they are replacing the crank (parts only, must pay for labor & must be done by a yamaha tech). The yamaha rep said that they've never seen anything like this before. (Yeah right, maybe yamaha should read DRN occasionally)

If we want to act "against" Yam let us collect the infos

WR 250 F (European model)
N°: ...426
Bought in March 2001
Belgium
Pin Broken at 1050 miles

As long as yamaha is replacing the parts I dont have too much of a beef with them. It just sucks that they want the dealers to make the money off the labor when many of us are probably better mechanics than the ones at the dealer.

The real problem is that yamaha is not admitting to a problem. If I owned a yz250f I'd be dumping it ASAP. Imagine the crank comming apart on the ramp of a 100 footer. That could leave yamaha open for all kinds of legal action and it'd serve them right.
