Anyone purchase a bike from out of state? and....

I am very close to purchasing a CRF450 and have found a good deal from out of state. To be exact, $5850 out the door. However, what should I expect from an out of state purchase? Will I be able to due this transaction with out paying state taxes? What about titleing a dirt bike? Is it recommended?

What have other people, who have purchased bikes from out of state, experienced? Any suggestions or info. would be much appreciated.

I bought my '99 WR 400 from Competetion Accesories in Ohio - I lived in Long Beach, CA at the time. The bike came completely assembled. They put it on a skid (forkliftable sp?) and built 'hoops' around it & then wrapped everything in shrink wrap. Skid/pallet cost $50 & shipping to the rail yard in LA was $300. Still came out cheaper than buying the bike locally - no set-up, no paperwork fee, & below MSRP. In CA the DMV collects sales tax when you title/register the vehicle. I avoided sales tax by not titleing/registering the bike for six months. I had just torn up my knee - ACL & meniscus - so that wasn't a problem. The only problems were the MSO & service manual were 'forgotten' and had to be mailed separately.

All in all, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a NEW bike from an out of state dealer.

Here in Ohio, if you purchase a bike from out of state and you don't get it titled, you don't pay any taxes......you just won't have a valid title in your name until you do so....I think it's the same in a lot of states.
If you do get a title from the dealership nobody will make you title it unless you go to public riding areas that require a sticker....
Bad thing is if you don't title it in your name you can't properly show ownership (unless there is a NOTORIZED BILL OF SALE) and the bike will be impossible to "TRADE IN" at a dealership .

Good luck....IMHO I'd get the thing titled

Did that $5850 include shipping? I bought my 450F out of state also, was shipped last thursday, will be here this week. From what I understand here in California is "if the bike is not brought into California w/in 90 days, then it is deemed to be originally purchased for use outside of California and no sales tax will be collected. (as long as the reason for the delay is not shipping related)" I read this as "wait 90 days to go to DMV and save $400+". Luckily I have private land to ride on in the mean time.

Probrably saved a grand over buying it locally, if I could even find one around here.

I would wait more than 91 days before going to the DMV. I brought my trailer into CA 95 days after purchase & the guy at the DMV flagged it for a sales tax release from the Board of equalization. There is another thread around here with some info - do a search on my user name.

My bikes coming from Canada tomorrow. Would imagine the same issues apply. Anything I should look out for, or just stay on the tracks, I mean don't ride for awhile.

That is strange. Out here I just took my old 400 in as a trade with no papers at all. They took it just fine.

Colorado is one State that doesn't register Dirt Bikes. I found this out when I bought my XR4 from a guy that moved here from CO.

You don't pay sales tax at the dealer when you buy a bike from out of state because you are required to pay it locally in your home state. Most states collect this when you title or register the vehicle. In many states they do not register dirt bike or ATVs so if you buy out of state you just don't pay the tax. EXCEPT, all dealers must register their sales with their state. Any other state that asks for a listing of out of state buyers from another state can have it. I know someone from Georgia that bought a dirt bike here in Florida to save money, mostly the sales tax, but Georiga does at times request that list from its surrounding states, a few months later he got a tax bill from Georgia, so he didn't really save anything.

Mark,

I'm thinking of buying a bike (CRF450) out of Canada and having it shipped to Colorado. Any advice on how to get it done the cheapest and safest?

As the process was so painless for me, all I can advise is do it with someone that has experience shipping them south. I hear that things can get held up in customs if anything is out of order. Mine was ordered Thursday, shipped Saturday, and arrived at my office Tuesday morning! Can't ask for quicker service than that. The guy who helped me has done this many times, so I needed to do nothing. While he probably made a bit off of me, vs. buying straight from a shop, it was worth it to have a hassle free purchase.

I am hearing that the 450f's are not as easy to get out of Canada, as Honda is not thrilled about it. If you have a chance, better act on it and find out what the shop's experience is.

Well after reading all of the responses, I've decided to purchase the CRF for $5800 and title it here in TX sometime after it arrives. It seems like too much hassel not having it titled and then worring about where I can or can not ride.

BTW- $5850 was the price w/o taxes and I can decide if I want it delivered in the crate (as it was shipped from Honda) or have is assembled prior to shipement. This leads me to another question.........(See other post)

RVL- Before moving to TX, I lived in WI for around five years. I made some friends with the dealership while there after purchasing other toys. (Street Bikes mainly) When I couldn't locate a good deal in the Houston area, I checked with them and we decided on $5800.

be careful with the shipping company. it took me almost 6 weeks to get my 2000 ktm 520exc from pennsylvania to los angeles. unless you trust the dealer i would actually hire the shipping company yourself and make sure that they have regular shipments out of the town you are shipping from to where you are at. i was given an amazing runaround by both the dealer and the shipping company for almost 3 weeks. apparently the crate sat in a shipping yard for 4 weeks before this particular company had a truck going west. this was when these ktms were real scarce and i almost went absolutely crazy over this.

My 450F arrived at noon today, took 8 days from IL to CA. I paid the dealer $300 for delivery & he took care of shipping to my door step. Had a little scare when the truck line called yesterday to confirm delivery. They said it was Freight COD and the driver would need to pickup a check for $917:scream: . It got real quiet in a hurry after he said that. One phone call and 20 minutes later it was all taken care of. Whew

All in all it worked out well, I probably saved a grand easy. I'd do it again.
