CRF450, crated or assembled? What's involved?

I have recently put money down on a CRF450 and am purchasing it from out of state. The dealer is willing to ship it to me crated (like it was shipped from Honda) or assembled. I would prefer to have it crated and then assemble it myself. However, I have never assembled a bike before and am concerned that it would be too much to handle. What is involved with this type of assembly and would I need special tools?

Would it be better to ship it assembled? Of course, I would then have to re-crate it before shipping.

Piece of cake! I would definatelt have shipped in the crate. The handlebars are turned sideway's and mounted to the side of the crate, with all cables atteached. The front wheel is resting along side the swingarm completely assembled. Other than that, it is assembled. You definately should take this time to grease and retorque everything. Read your owners manual and familiarize yourself on the oil volumes and drain locations, as well as some break in steps. Take some contact cleaner, or lacquer thinner and clean the brake rotors befor you use them. Congratulations on one sweeeeet ride!

Thanks for sharing. I'm real excited to pick this baby up. It's been twelve years since my last dirt bike and I've rarley had a month go by during this time that I haven't thought about getting back to riding. After college, my company moved me around a bit and I was hesitant to ride alone. I've finally decided to bite the bullet and just ride, alone or otherwise.

Anyway, based on your information, I'm gonna ship the thing in the crate and assemble it myself. I'd probably have to tear it down to re-grease it anyway.

Thanks again.

Vince, don't ride alone. There's plenty of riders to hook up with thru these forums. Try posting in the "Places to ride forum" that you'd like to find some local DRN'ers to check your new red machine. I'll bet you'll get at least a few replies.:D

Does anyone know if its true that you can't purchase one from a dealer in the crate? I ask if they would (r+d honda slatington pa) and they said no beacause of liability. How much do they charge for set up? Seems a waste of time being that when i get it home its going to be taken apart again to be greased.

Vince,

What kind of deal are you getting? If you don't want to post it online, email me at mike@thedorseys.org

Thanks

Don't worry about riding alone. When you get the CRF, you'll have lots of friends all of a sudden.........

MotoMan.....I've purchased it out of state (In WI) for $5800.00. (state taxes not included) This was a MUCH better deal than my local shops. Typically, they were asking $6300 plus t,t,l, freight and setup.

It is not typical for a dealership to sell a bike crated. I believe "Honda" sets this regulation, for whatever reason. However, because of my familiarity with the dealership, they are willing to ship me a crated unit.

The concern I would have is that it is a first year model. Inevitably there will be some bugs that dealers will need to fix. Most Hinda dealers are locally owned and managed and the relationship you have with the dealer will impact your ability to get the fixes applied.
