Found new (on dealer's showroom floor) 2000 XR600R. MSRP is $5200. How much is this bike worth now (retail)? And how much will it be worth the day after it's sold? Trying to decide if 2002 XR400R is a better deal. I'm after durability and low (do-it-yourself) maintenance. Will be using for light-to-moderate riding on Michigan trials.:think

GET THE XR400 NO COMPARISON !:scream:

The Suzuki DRZ400-kicker is a great bike, and can be grabbed for around $3800 right now.
Youll get a better engine and ergos at least.

xr4 is a good one. Wayne 426, a better motor? C'mon the handa engine is second to none in terms of reliability, maintenance and solid performance. Ergos is a personal thing. I have ridden a DRZ and they are nice, but I'll take the honda every time. No flame intended!

The XR4 is a great bike, and prob the most reliable, but IMO, the power feels weak to me. The DRZ I rode seemed to rev higher and longer than the XR, and I rode them back to back. Just my .02 -

Hey,
That is expensive for a 2000 XR600. The same $ for he 02 XR4 would be the better buy. If you are relatively big, and are confident you could handle the extra weight, the 600 would be an awesome bike. The 400 would be better in the tight stuff, but if you know how to handle a big thumper, you will have fun with either.
The DRZ's are nice bikes, but being technically advanced as they are, they have their little bugs. You will not beat an aircooled XR in reliability, durability and ease of maintenance. Power, and throttle response on stockers is down, relatively speaking, airbox/exhaust mods and jetting tweaks really wake the XR's up.
Before you buy, look at cycletrader.com. There are tons of XR400's in there, many of them at or below $3000. The money you save on a good used bike, can go towards performance mods, protective gear etc... Good luck.

i bought my 1996 xr600 in oct. of 96 , retail on it even back then was
about 5200 , i got it for 4600 . i have done all types of riding on this
bike , from tight single-track to dirt roads . you would swear this bike
automatically gains and loses 100 lbs. when you go from a tight single-
track trail to a 2-track . that is the biggest bitch i have about this bike ,
the weight . reliability is not an issue , nothing breaks , unless i make it
break ,
the bike handles good with a few suspension mods , and the
motor has the powerband of a john-deere tractor . unless honda builds
an off road version of the crf450r , i will continue to ride this bike . :D

I paid $4700 for a 650R, much better bike. The resale value of the 00 600R will be peanuts, so many newer bikes are already on the used bike market you might have a hard time getting any reasonable offer.

IN MY OPINION, THE XR400R IS A GOOD HANDLING BIKE, BUT ITS DOG SLOW. THE XR600R IS FASTER BUT HEAVIER, IF YA DON'T MIND A LITTLE WEIGHT. AN XR650R IS NO-COMPARISON FASTER THAN BOTH! ITS A ROCKET, AND FEELS LIGHTER THAN A XR600R(EVEN THOUGH ITS NOT). I HAVE OWNED A 98'XR600R, 00'XR650R,01'CR250R,AND A NEW 02'CRF450R. MY BRO-IN-LAW HAS A 98'XR400R. AFTER RIDING ALL THESE HONDAS, I KNOW WHAT'S HEAVY AND WHAT'S LIGHT. WHAT'S FAST AND SLOW. SO rrw17, IF YOU LIVE NEAR CANADA, GO GET A CRF450R IN CANADA FOR AROUND $5000 U.S. FUNDS LIKE I DID. ITS LIGHTER THAN ANY OF THE OTHER BIKES, AND MAKES THE XR400R FEEL LIKE A MINIBIKE FOR POWER. AT 55hp YOU CAN'T BUY A BIKE WITH MORE POWER. EASY TO START, NO VIBRATION IN THE BARS,AND SUPER SMOOTH. THE BIKE I ALWAYS WANTED! IF YA NEED A HEADLIGHT, TAPE A MAG LIGHT TO THE FENDER! YOU WON'T BE SORRY.AND SPEND THE MONEY TO GET THE SUSPENSION DONE, ITS THE BEST MONEY I EVER SPENT.
