Big Dudes does YZ250f cut it?

The last couple of years I have been riding 400 four strokes, this year I've been having a blast riding my son's XR250. We have been riding tracks mostly and wonder if the YZ250f is eons better?

Hi trewent,

Let me start by saying that im 6'4" and 250# and I love my 250F. This bike just doesnt never stop to amaze me. I live out here in SoCal and this thing will pull me anywhere but the steepest most difficult hills that would be hard on any bike. On the track or 2nd or 3rd gear trails this thing is awesome. Between the tractible power and the phenominal handling it just makes you feel like a hero. It just does not tire you out like the bigger bikes, and with my cheeseburger diet thats wat counts the most.
But by your tag line I see you have a KTM 400, I would like a opinion about that bike, on paper it would seem to be between the 250f and the 426f, lighter weight than the 426 but more power than the 250f.

In a nut shell yes. Comparing the XR to the 250f is like comparing a covered wagon to a Ferrari. I tip the scales after a good meal at 240 and can haul pretty good on it. I embarass my fair share of young 125 pilots on it at the track. It's not my mian race bike (426) but it sure brings a smile to my face when I ride it. It' just makes me wanna ride....good idea seeya!

You guys are makin' me think my wife's next bike will be a 250F. Her current bike is a '92 XR250 & I have a blast riding it even though I too am 6'4"/250 and subscribe to the cheesebuga diet. I think I, er I mean the wife needs a new bike:D

I haven't spent enough time on either of these bikes myself to have an opinion, but a guy I talked to the other day who races enduro at the expert level said he was about 3% quicker on his wr than he was on his xr. Quite a significant improvement, but not exactly ferraris vs covered wagons . He is only about 180 though...

[B]Hi trewent,If you are in love with your 250 F you will be most than disappointed with the KTM stroker....Engine is great but that’s it....the rest is under average.
Strange to state this about a bike which is a winner in the tests.
The handling is not "European" like they said ...it is awful. The front is not light...you have the feeling to ride a HOOVERCRAFT the front end is "floating"....and this is not because you are wheeleing.....I tried to have my fork fixed ..after they made the rear + the front...and after I crashed...the front went out at a 4 TH speed ..you can imagine...plaster and so on.
Now they are selling some aftermarket 3 clamp sets ....16 or 18 mm instead of the standard 20...You know what is funny NONE of the OFFICIAL WORK racing bike from KTM is mounted with the standard 20 MM. So why are they keeping on.
Result I sold the KTM bought an WR 250 F, was happy, till the crankshaft broke....., but I really like the handling.
YAM gave me the parts.

Rako,

I appreciate the honesty. I too sometimes feel the KTM is like riding a couch. Have been thinking of having the suspension done more for mx. But I swear (my yz400 is out west and hasn't been ridin for a year) that the yz400 tracked better. I've ridden a CR250 '98 and it felt better controlled that the KTM. Do you ride track or trail?
